I have been to Adoptapet.com every single night for the past two weeks or so. I cannot control myself. I get home, I am tired, I feel like I need a present. Puppies that could potentially be yours but do not need to be cared for right at this moment? A google for biographies of adorable creatures who were just saved? Yes. I look at pictures of dogs for a very long time. Sometimes I choose to only look for girls, since bae would only adopt a girl, and this makes me feel like I am getting closer to The One. I wouldn’t say it’s my therapy, but I also would not rule it out.

Women, Hookups, and the Big O
Here's my story in yesterday's science times on how women are less likely to reach orgasm in hookups than in relationships, and why they have casual sex anyway. Talked to some awesome women and brilliant scientists.
"Just Joined Kinja to Follow Caity Weaver"
When people say that someone "would be fun to have a beer with" I picture a cowboy or someone that grew up with cowboys. But from now on I'm going to think of Nathanb, who clearly just gets it.
In his post, titled so matter of factly "Just Joined Kinja to Follow Caity Weaver," he first, almost as a throwaway, just kinda like mentions the thing about kinja that makes it a business.
Turns out Kinja is a fun site: Cool look to it, you can blog, and you can share posts from the Kinja network; including from Gawker where Caity Weaver writes. By the way, you don't get paid to blog on Kinja, it's just for fun.
"It's just for fun," he says, with a knowing smile and a curt nod. He then adds that he started reading Caity when she made fun of "the insufferable Mark Wahlberg". He also hates mark wahlberg, who I keep forgetting is famous, and says, perfectly:

I'm going to put links at the bottom of this entry to my scathing posts about Wahlberg, plus some of Caity's. Maybe some other stuff. I'm not putting links in the body of my text, I can't stand that when people do that, so I won't subject you to it.

Anyway, Caity's stuff is very funny. Reading her articles is one of the few things I do that I genuinely enjoy. I laugh hard. Her humor is right up my alley.

Cheerleaders Are A Weird Thing
Like every obnoxious person, I love football. And in the course of loving football, I’ve come upon cheerleaders. A bunch of times per game.
So it’s obviously a pretty weird thing, for all of the reasons in the world. The year is 2013 and we let women vote, and have jobs as well as babies (having it all).
We also have women wearing underwear and shaking around for people to watch when they get bored of the game. They’re paid, but still. You can be paid and objectified at the same time. And it still feels icky to think how many eyes are ogling a half naked woman on national TV all at once.
The thing is, technically everyone is objectifying the people on their televisions always. That includes the players, whom we all talk about “owning” thanks to fantasy football.
But there is probably something different about enjoying the game and enjoying the girls. The game is meant to entertain. The girls only become entertainment when we put their fleshy parts in the spotlight and make them dance.

I I am thinking of starting a "top comment" series. because commenters are what Al Gore made the internet for. These heroes will save us all. I'm pretty sure that commenters is who Rick Ross was talking about when he once said (gargled) "f-ck a blog dog, one day we gon' meet."
Anyway on this nice little blog post about turning your beer bottles into glasses, there seems to have been a hubbub about the safety of such a perfectly hipster DIY coup. (For the record, when I was living in Cuba for four months, we didn't have enough glasses so we had to cut off the ends of soda bottles and use them. We, like, washed them in the sink. Safe to say that I will not be partaking in this "fun" "project" voluntarily.)

On the Subway Yesterday
On the subway coming home from work at an unusually early hour. People who go home at 6pm are just different from people who ride the train an hour later. Or maybe there's just fewer of them. In any case, the mom is standing, the kid is in the stroller and the grandmother takes a seat between two older men. Neither gets up to offer the mother, who is standing, a seat. One of these sitting idiots, wearing a pinstripe suit, is smiling at the baby and the grandmother and the standing mother like he's not in the world that we all inhabit. Like he's not sitting in the seat that would be perfect for the mother of the screaming baby to sit in. I do my best "get up or history will not look back on your life favorably" look, but he just grins foolishly at me. Then, of all things, the guy on the other side of the grandma takes out a q-tip and starts cleaning his ears (he alternated with his index finger). Pinstripe suit, horrified, begins to shake his head. I could swear for one minute he and I were thinking the exact same thing. What an ass.

John Eligon writes a beautiful postscript to his article on a white supremacist who has plans to create an all-white colony in a 24-person North Dakota town.
Many people have wondered how I could stomach doing an interview with a man whose beliefs were so hostile toward people of my race. Besides the fact that I erect a wall of professionalism when doing my job, there was nothing shocking about what he said. I knew that these were his beliefs. I’m often more taken aback by the subtle racist attitudes and suggestions when I don’t expect it. In this situation, I found that the best way to offset his offensive riffs was to confront him with dry humor of my own. At one point I told him he’d better watch out because my frontal lobe was going crazy. Later, he tapped my knee and told me he was just joking when he said it wouldn’t be right to let me in his home because I was black. I responded that I was surprised he wasn’t rushing to scrub his hand after touching me.
