With funding from the Knight Foundation, YBCA is working with the mayor's Office for Innovation and the City Planning Department to solicit ideas and input about what would improve and revitalize Market Street - not only as a whole, but with respect to its various mini "communities": the Embarcadero, Financial District, Mid-Market, Civic Center, Upper Market. The focus will be on "what would improve street life, what would activate and bring people together?"
That goal would sound terminally wonky were it not for the fact that the ideas will be coming from artists and designers.
Is it art? Is it community? For Cullinan, it's both. "We see community involvement," she says, "as a curatorial department."
