Anonymous is a hactivist group that protests a variety of world wide issues. It originally started in 2008 with protesting the church of scientology. Its other goal is to raise awareness of wikileaks. It is to be known for the most part as a leaderless organization. A small portion of it's members are hackers. Hactivists like anonymous are fighting for free speech, privacy, freedom from surveillance, and also to promote and innovate ideas.
Twitter was one of the main driving forces behind the occupy wall street movement. It allowed people to communicate and interact without being face to face. This helped protesters to plan meetings and also express their feelings. This also allowed for the decentralization of leadership. Twitter kinda of took over a leadership role which allowed multiple people to lead and express their feelings. This use of Twitter cab be seen in other movements such as the Arab spring.
PRISM was another NSA program that targeted internet websets for gathering information. They were taking information from companies like google, facebook, microsoft, youtube, and yahoo. Most of these companies denied having any involvement cooperating with the government. NSA got away with this with a program called MUSCULAR. They would take information from these companies over seas where there is no regulations against doing so. Not only did online companies divulge information, but phone companies also call history to the government. All this goes to show just how much the government knows about us, and how useful the internet can be to them.
The NSA initiated something they called the program. This was okayed by two presidents. This progran was started right after the September 11th attacks. Its goal was to monitar American civilian internet and phone activity. This was done to protect Americans from another terrorist attack. All this was while highly contested, and that is why Edward Snowden leaked a lot of classified information.
Managing political outrage in Russia can go either two ways. The whistle blower can cooperate with the authoritarian elites and then the scandle will be down played so the public will not be outraged, or the whistle blower doesn't cooperate and then the elites try to erase everything so the news does not travel over social media.
Cartography has vastly changed through applications such as google earth. Google earth creates this socio-geographical Information that helps us navigate the world. It gives us free open source software, it gives us practical information, such as weather and traffic, and also games such as zombie maps. With this though there is a big digital divide from real maps and cartography with gps and google earth.
The way in which Obama used web 2.0 was very advantageous to himself and his campaign. He got his voice and message out there on the internet. This connected with a lot of young people and helped create support for Obama and his campaign. He used the web 2.0 to his advantage.
MP3 first was introduced in 1992. It revolutionlized the music industry. It was small in size, downloaded easily, and also fast. It made file sharing very easy and accessible from sites like napster. Major music companies did not know how to react to this new and cheap music. When majors did react it only pushed customers to the black market. Companies like apple used and sold MP3s for extremely low prices on iTunes. All of this pushed customers away from the majors producing records and more towards MP3s and file sharing. This was known as the MP3 Crisis.
Copyright first appeared in 1790 with the copyright act. This law was enacted to promote public learing. Today copyright laws push the creation of orginal ideas. They try to prohibit the reuse or copying of others material and ideas. In the 1990s, a series of trade agreements were created. These agreements were similar to copyright laws, but were not technically law. They could be changed and adapted to accommodate certain cituations and circumstances.
Intimate media are media artifacts created to capture and commemorate aspects of family and relationships. Old intimate media were such things as photo albums, scrapbooks, and diaries that would bring back old memories to us. New intimate media today would be social networks, text messaging, and blogs. New intimate media can hold much more memories accurately due to the fact that computer memories do not change, where as a humans mind will forget and add things. All of this opens up a realm of ambient intelligence.
The connected presence’ in distributed family life is something that is much more common now a days. As families get more diverse and independent of each other, one would think that there would be less communication between them. However, mobile phones make this communication possible. These mobile phones are used for micro-coordination, remote parenting, and short expressive conversations. Even at a small level, families that are not always together can stay connected. This is the connected presence in distributed family life.
The like button is something that most people take for granted. As well as the share button. You hit like on a status or decide to share a photo and think that is that. Or you are on YouTube and watch a video and see the Facebook connect button at the bottom of the page, but this time you don't hit connect and decide not to share it. Whether you decide to share or like or not, you're always being tracked in some way by Facebook. All these buttons connect people more and more, but it also gives Facebook more and more information on you and helps them build a profile on you that you never see. This is the like economy.
Its a little bit blurry, but this is an example of homophily. Homophily is when you connect with people like you and are similar or like minded too yourself. And these birds are hanging with each other because they do not have any feathers. We do this on social networking also. We do this because being around people that are similar to us comes off as safe and nonthreatening. Being around people like yourself though will not expose you to other ideas our thoughts. Who you know and interact with will shape what you know.
Twitter and Facebook are two of the biggest social medias that people use. By using sites such as these, users are taking part in the confessional society. By sharing and posting things, people are staying in the game of socializing. However, without staying active and posting, users are distancing themselves from this confessional society. The more sometime posts, the more their life becomes public, and less private.
This is good example of interface. In the picture you can see a hand coming in contact with the interface. The interface is is where our bodies meet the information. This is also a good example of how interface are taken for granted because they are so small.
