Gage hesitated a moment, building her confidence before straightening up and lifting her hands as she began to sign and speak. “U-um, would you, um, li-like to grab some ice cream? My dad, um, mentioned a place to me and I-I was thinking of trying it out!”

Nathan scratched the back of his neck, then folded his arms. “I dunno. I don’t want to walk...” he said. “You should go.”

Nathan listened to Sage babble, not showing any notice but enjoying the sound of her voice and her crazy ideas. “I wouldn’t put it past her,” he said with a smirk, looking up at his door as if Blake was going to storm in any minute.

He let Sage take the popcorn mostly because he wasn’t hungry, and his stomach was flipping anyway, though he brushed it off and tried to ignore it. He watched the screen flicker with the cartoon, pretty content for once, one of his childhood shows and a good friend nearby. His usually slow heart rhythm was surely up to a steady, if not fast, pace by now, gulping to keep himself from noticeably stiffening up. “Yeah, it’s fine,” he said, playing with the angle of the screen and shrugging it off as if it was nothing.
