I know girls who spill I’m sorry’s from their mouths like they pump blood to their veins. Sometimes, I am one. I know girls who apologize for asking to go to the bathroom in class, who apologize for everything because they feel like they are taking up more than their fair share of space on this planet. Everything starts with an I’m sorry and ends with one too, constant bookends that we don’t even notice anymore. We delete her apology the way we delete likes and ums from speech. I know girls with ten times more apologies than misdemeanors and I wonder how often they hear It’s okay. You’re more than okay.

I've been on tumblr so long today that I am actually sick to my stomach about the current state of affairs. Almost my entire feed is Ferguson/stand your ground/racial inequality posts and, while I like to think of myself as generally informed, I am feeling physically ill at the absurdity that is this country right now.

Do better, America. This is inexcusable. Do. Better.

Do not stop until she is begging for your silence with her lips on yours in muffled gasps. Tell her a story: that time when you were five and fell into a pond and almost drowned. Tell her you are so glad a passerby dived in and saved your life because otherwise you would never have met her. Sit in silence and trace the veins in her neck with your tongue until she sighs and whispers ‘you are keeping me alive.’ Say that she is doing just fine on her own but hold her a little closer and tighter anyway; she needs it. "It’s okay. It’s okay to be sad." Sometimes these are the only words you need. Pepper her tear stained cheeks with kisses and say " it’s okay. I’ll be here. I’ll always be here."
