The Following Thoughts Are Not Mutually Exclusive:

(1) Thinking that Rafael deserves to be happy and that his choice to distance himself from Jane came across as harsh but is ultimately the best thing he can do to protect his heart.

His life and the plans he had with his family have been disrupted and he’s frustrated by that.

And when we put his feelings into context, how being a “second choice” is something he legitimately fears, of course, he wants to protect himself. Of course, he wants reassurance. His actions align well with who he is as a character. He isn’t regressing, he’s choosing himself–and that’s something to applaud him for (I think anyway.)

(2) Thinking that Rafael is could have handled the situation with a little more grace.

Michael was kidnapped, tortured and made to forget who he was. He didn’t leave and then decide to come back. This isn’t Jane hanging on to an ex-husband who abandoned her. Neither had a choice in how they were separated.

Michael is(?) was(?) her husband and he was taken from her. He died. Well, he “died.”

Yes, they have a life now but Jane never stopped loving him. And had he been truly gone she would have gone on loving him. The only difference now is that he’s alive.

So to expect her to say she doesn’t have feelings for him, that she doesn’t love him anymore is absurd. How could she feel any other way?

(3) If not being picked by Jane has the potential to destroy him, perhaps a relationship isn’t what Rafael needs.

Feeling this way isn’t good or healthy.

The trend of Rafael picking himself is one that needs to stay.

(4) This love angle is tired.

Michael has already stated his ability and intention to bow out so the showrunners need to put an end to this charade and stop stressing me out.

Because so much of his self-esteem hinges on being him someone’s first choice, there’s a 60% chance of Jane and Raf will end up together.

Jane and Michael are no longer the same people they once were; grief, time and torture have changed them respectively. They grew without each other and so they may not be right for each other anymore.

Still, their love will always remain and it will always be special to them both. 

(5) Despite that, I don’t want a plotline where Michael had to be brought back from the dead and present for Rafael to feel good about being chosen first. I really don’t. He deserves better than that and Michael deserves better than that as well.

Most shows I’ve seen that mention fan fiction readers/writers portray them as kinda oddball super-geeks with no lives or social skills.

So I wanna take a moment to appreciate the fact that in Parks & Recreation, the character who writes fan fiction is the intelligent, successful, and good-looking primary love interest of the main character.
