Hello, my name is NattiKay, and welcome to my blog! Before you follow, there’s a thing you should know about how I do fandom.

At any given time I will have two categories of fandom. One is casual interests, which I can have many of simultaneously. The other is what you might call a "special interest" fandom. I only really have one of these at a time, it lasts for years, and it is much more all-consuming to my brain (and by extension my blog) than my casual interests. And while these special fandoms are long-lasting, they do occasionally switch (and I have little to no control over when that happens, or to what).

That said, my current special-interest fandom is Avatar (James Cameron/blue people), with emphasis on the Na'vi language and the Sully family.

I make this distinction to say that if you recently found this blog through fanart from one of these previous fandoms and followed hoping for more, I’m sorry to say you’re going to be disappointed.

I will not be offended if you follow me during one special interest and then unfollow when it switches. I will also not be offended if you recently found this blog through my old content from previous fandoms and then choose not to follow because of this post: like I said, if you follow hoping for new art from those, you’re gonna be let down 😅

Hiccup as a Na'vi from Avatar!

This is my first time drawing a Na'vi please be kind haha

I can do a little of info dump about his story if someone is interested 🤔

But, "hiccup" transliterated into the Na'vi language would probably be something like Hìkap 🙂

dreamingspiritongaia's suggestion of Hikxup in the replies would also be phonetically valid in Na'vi, but I think Hìkap would be much closer to the original English pronunciation - here's the difference! 😸

For more about the Na'vi alphabet I'd recommend this video! There's also this one that goes a little more into making syllables, which would be useful if you want to transliterate more names! 🙂

Out of curiosity– and feel free to ignore, obviously, I'm an internet rando– How do you think you'd go about translating his name, not just transliterating?

As explained in the HTTYD books, the name Hiccup is important. He literally is named mistake. In the movie they explain that vikings on Berk give their kids scary names to ward off evil. In the books, Hiccup is a name given to babies the vikings of Berk don't think will survive the winter; this is why he's the third of his name. (Hiccup I and Hiccup II become important narratively but i digress).

So, maybe a name similar to the Na'vi word for mistake? It looks like there are several with different contexts, but it doesn't look like there's a direct word for hiccup with the context of a physical hiccup too. (Obligatory disclaimer that I don't think we've seen Na'vi with noun/object names, like how humans would be named Hope or River; this is for fun.)

There's not currently a word for "hiccup" as in a physical spasm of the diaphragm, no - the closest we have to that would be the verb he'a (to cough), or its noun form sähe'a. The word for "mistake" is kxeyey. I would definitely hesitate to directly name a child Kxeyey personally, does not feel very nice lol, but I guess if you've got a valid lore reason for it then hey go nuts ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Regarding word-based names, it's definitely unusual, but not unheard of. Of the roughly 250 canon Na'vi names I've catalogued, about 11 of them also exist as everyday words. Those names are as follows:

Atan - n., light Oma* - n., spirit world Rawm - n., lightning Ro'a - vin., to be impressive Sosul - adj., smelling of wet vegetation Syanan - n., a type of waterfall Takuk - vtr., to strike Taronyu** - n., hunter Tsyal - n., wing Telisi - n., whirlwind Tukru - n., spear *the word oma for "spirit world" is mentioned in the Fire and Ash Visual Dictionary, but has not yet been confirmed by KP; take it with a grain of salt for now **the character Taronyu is canonically a legend: said to be the first Na'vi to ever tame and ride an ikran. Whether there was once a "real" Na'vi named Taronyu or whether this figure is purely mythical is unclear.

There are a few more if you include animal names, buuuuut just because a word is used for an animal name doesn't necessarily mean it'd be used for people too: after all, while meeting a human called Hope or River isn't that unusual, meeting a human called Mittens or Spot would be very strange lol

But yeah, while word-based names for people are definitely the exception not the rule, they do occur occasionally!

so uhhhh ever since Fire and Ash was released digitally I've seen some lovely gifsets from it. I'd like to ask the folks who are making them....how are you getting the screenshots/clips? 😅

There's a scene that I'd really like to use for editing purposes but can't because I only have the movie on iTunes which aggravatingly blocks screenshotting

More specifically, does anyone have the clip where Pìril connects to the spirit tree on hand? Not a GIF, the actual clip with the original audio. The only "ending clips" I've been able to find are either snippets of the final battle, or the scene with Spider in the spirit world...I need the part BETWEEN those 😅
