Loyalty shall be our undoing (pjo/akotsk crossover)

So curious about this is it a both characters in same place situation or mixing elements of both materials?

My thanks to you and @randomfandom20 for giving me the motivation to talk about this. This is a crossover au where Percy Jackson and his twin Alex Jackson (my oc) wake up in the asoiaf universe, roughly a couple of years before Ashford.

After the secon war, the demigods are hoping for a bit of peace, but roughly one year later Percy and Alex (oc) go to sleep in their beds and wake up in a strange place, together, wearing their armour (Percy greek style of the book, Alex similar but more flexible) tehy're also in their typical day clothes and have their magic weapons with them in their disguised forms (Percy's anaklasmous in it's pen form ad Alex's trident in it's hair clip form). They try to gather where they are, but even the stars are wrong.

They at least realise that they feel no trouble using their powers (controlling water, tornados and heartquakes and speaking to horses and fishes (they are not condisered royalty by them) (Alex has different strenghts than Percy, he can't control large quantities of water, but he has much more refined control over what he can; he can't control hearthquackes and tornados, but he has more ease controlling body fluids, and has found away to use moisture to ecolocate (he's teaching it to Percy)).

They also are pretty much super humans (demigods are in general faster, stronger and have better senses than mortals) and they can be pretty creepy (give off a bit of uncanny valley effect).

While trying to find their bearings they stumble upn an old knight and his young massive squire, ser Arlan and Dunk, they, despite the slight language barrier (modern English vs old English) become quick friends with Dunk and decide to follow the two, (helps that they found two wild horses before meeting them and they have agreed to be their steeds), and agree to earn their keep.

Over the months Percy manages to get himself a new sword (riptide cannot hurt mortals) while Alex had, thankfully his knives with him, and his trident is made of Atlantean steel, which can hurt mortals, so he had to learn to never keep it disguised. Over time Arlan and Dunk learn about who and what the twins are, because of this the twins are more relaxed around them and use their abilities to help in the wilderness.

In this Arlan and Dunk are a bit more well off, simply because they have two more competent people around, who are really good at things like fighting and surviving, so they manage to get higher paying jobs (even if they do have to talk instead of the twins because Percy and Alex are very much "eat the rich" and anapologetic about it, also they aren't knights and don't want to be).

There's also pretty privilage, has the twins are beautiful (all demigods get that bit of otherwordly beauty after puberty, some more than others) and exotic (clothes, armours, accent, features) so some ladies hire the four as bodyguard during journeys, even if the twins don't reciprocate any advances done on them (both in committed relationships that a bit of dimensional travel isn't going to break).

Dunk here is also a bit more competent, as he has two othe teachers, who not only teach him a bit of their fighting style, but they also have a bucnh of skills which they trade for skills Arlan and Dunk know.

Three years pass, and the twins aren't aging, even if they don't realise it. Alex clocks that Arlan is injured immediately and forcefully treats him, neither he nor Percy are healers, but they know a bunch and a bunch is good enough to keep Arlan alive, by the time they reach Ashford Arlan is still alive,even if in no condition to fight, and has knighted Dunk a few months earlier.

Before arriving at Ashford they meet Egg at the tavern and Arlan realises that he's been raised by nobles, even if he, and the rest, assume he's a bastard to a minor lord.

Ashford happens, Dunk doesn't meet the princes at first because he has Arlan to vouch for him, and he's better equipped with armour for himself and for Thunder. The twins have no intention of partecipating and are more than happy to stay on the sidelines cheering with Arlan and helping Egg in his duties as a squire. Or at least that was the plan, but Aerion sucks.

Here Dunk is a bit more...aware, as he has passed the last three years with two anti feudalists who have ranted him more than enough time about class problems and who also have reminded him time and time again: "the rich get away with everything so be careful". So, because of this he doesn't punch or kick Aerion, but reastrains him (without hurting him) enough for the puppeteers to get away (Arlan was by himself drinking, Percy was at the Baratheon party tent and Alex was at the river talkin to fishes, so Egg only finds Dunk). He still gets imprisoned and Aerion still cals for his hands.

The trial goes as canon, Dunk calls for a trial by combact (this time he thought of it by himself because ser Arlan was explaining the rights of a knight to Percy and Alex, and Dunk got a flashback while in the cells), and Aerion calls for a To7.

Dunk has less difficulty finding fighters, as he isn't alone, and had more time to make friends, so he has: Lyonel, Raymun, Rhysling, Beesbury, Percy and Alex (Arlan wanted to participate but recognised he was still recovering and wasn't in the condition to, Percy and Alex basically said: "we have made oaths to our gods, so we might as well be knights" and in doubt nobody knows they aren't but Dunk and Arlan and those two ain't snitching).

Baelor did want to take Dunk's side, but he learned that all slots were filled and he was like: "good for him even if not good for our image" (iat this point Baelor isn't as invested in Dunk as canon, simply because he hasn't really interacted with him much.

During the trial Percy goes for Maekar and Alex (who has his trident strapped to his back while using the lance) for Daeron, who he unhorses and then drags him to the side line to make sure he stays safe then he goes helping his teammates with the kingsguard, meanwhile Percy managed to unhorse Maekar and is fighting him on the ground, sword against mace. Percy quickly realises that he woulnd't be able to win against Maekar without tapping in on any of his more than humans capabilities (like his strenght and speed), so he decides to switch with Alex and go fight the KG.

(Alex is worse at dueling than Percy, but they're counting on the different fighting style and on Maekar having never fought a trident)

Long story short Percy realises that the others can take care of terrorising the KG and goes back to help his brother (Raymun is demolishing his cousin). Maekar does still get the mama bear strenght in his desperation to get to Aerion, but Alex and Percy are used to fighting together and aren't fighting their brother, so they manage to hold him up without hurting him or getting hurt long enough for the horn to sound.

Once the horns sounds they let him get to Aerion and they help a less injured than in canon Dunk and help him off the field (Alex is doing his best to keep Dunk's blood inside Dunk, but being better than Percy at it doesn't mean he's perfect, so Dunk still loses a lot of blood. Arlan arrives here and together they go to Lyonel's tent where, with the help of the master (who they almost impale when he suggests that he isn't healable) they treat Dunk. (Lyonel and Arlan find Alex's distase for the master really funny, Percy is busy pacing).

A couple of days later Baelor summons Dunk, and all four go, because 1 Dunk is in no condition to go on his own, and 2 they don't trust them to be alone with Dunk. Here Baelor offers to take them into his service, as "he believed in Dunk's innocence before the trial, and he was impressed by their fighting ability" understandably the four are pretty reluctanct.

Now here I thought of three options:

1- they accept, Egg becomes Dunk's squire, the twins become Egg's or the princesses sworn swords and Arlan happily retires. In this version this will become spearhedge.

2-they refuse and instead follow Lyonel to Storm's End, where Lyonel finds out their secret after Percy saves him from drowning. This version would be stormhedge.

3- they refuse and continue with their lives i the hedges, Dunk having lovers all over the seven kingdoms and the three friends burying ser Arlan under a penny tree.

In all versions after like three to four years the twins would disappear, waking up once more in the pjo universe, only a couple of months having passed. They wil ot have aged while in the akotsk world and the only thing they will carry from it is their memories and a couple of new scars.

• baelor looks like daeron, but with his mum’s coloring. people overlook that, but his face has got to be most similar with his dad.

• myriah has a sharp personality (like olenna but sterner). my faceclaim for her is manisha koirala. look up her character in heeramandi, that’s how i envision her to be like.

• dyanna is her favourite daughter-in-law, and although she doesn’t despise them, she doesn’t particularly like her other daughter-in-laws as well. she doesn’t like jena the most, but not unkind when they’re together.

I’m sorry, the scene where Maekar is sitting with Aerion as he recovers…

He’s sat there, grappling with the fact that he just killed his own brother. By all rights, he should blame Aerion for starting this mess, for attacking the puppet girl. But he doesn’t. He seems to blame Ser Duncan, but that’s Targaryen honor talking. He knows it’s Aerion’s fault— and so it’s ultimately his own fault.

He didn’t intend to kill Baelor. He loved Baelor. He and his brother were close. Their relationship was strong and built on years of trust and friendship.

And then Egg comes in. And he’s clearly here to kill his brother. And the look the Maekar gives him…

Incredulous, and in disbelief. Not “what are you doing” but “Could you? Would you really?” And he already knows the answer.

How did this happen? How are his sons strangers to one another— worse than strangers— when he and Baelor were so beloved to one another? How is it that he’s grieving the death of his brother so wholeheartedly while his sons plot fratricide?

It’s no wonder he talks so fiercely about ‘Blood of the Dragon’ and Targaryen honor when he sees it put under so much strain.

This scene is so good. It’s so good that it makes that final scene, where Egg sneaks off without his father’s permission, mildly infuriating. Because it’s so so clear that this moment is pivotal. That no matter what Maekar’s first reaction is to hearing Dunk’s condition to take Egg to squire, he’d come back to this moment and ultimately change his mind.

I just. This scene is so fantastic, probably my favorite in the whole season. And you can see why.

Also like to point out that when her mother says “I was your mother much upon these years that you are now a maid,” (translation: I had you when I was your age) you have to remember her father’s words: “earth hath swallowed all my hopes but she,” (translation: all the other children died.)  The whole plot point of Juliet being an only child is explained by her mother being a Margaret Beaufort type who had her first child too young and it damaged her past the point of being able to bear more children.

Margaret Beaufort died in 1509. She was a major player in the Wars of the Roses, the swirling on-again-off-again civil wars that consumed England from 1455-1487. Romeo and Juliet was written and first performed in the early 1590s. Your average English person of Shakespeare’s day would probably have had at least a vague understanding of who she was and what happened to her, because she was a key figure in recent history and was still getting passed around as a cautionary tale.

There are two great problems with what happened to Margaret (and that her parents are trying to do to Juliet). One is easy for modern people to spot (but was also a common response back in her own day). And that’s the moral implications of what was done to her. She was too young to be married, and it was horrifying that she was forced into it so young. Every one of the adults around her either acted immorally or failed to protect her. They were wrong. This is what modern people see, and it’s important to remember that people back in her day mostly agreed with it. You’re supposed to think it’s fucked up! When girls were married that young (and it didn’t happen often!) it was a formality 99% of the time. It was for dynastic or financial reasons (the girl has lots of money and/or land and/or a title that her husband wants), but the “couple” don’t consummate their marriage for years. And it’s not just that they would have separate bedrooms. They might not even live in the same country until the girl was in her late teens and physically and mentally mature enough to bear and raise kids. Hell, a lot of times they didn’t even meet until the girl was older! They had this thing called “proxy marriage” where you would have two separate ceremonies, in two separate places, with each party saying their vows separately, one in one city and the other in a different one. So, yeah, sure, the girl was technically married at 12, but she didn’t actually meet her “husband” in person until she was 17 and they didn’t start sleeping together until she was 20. That was a thing they did.

The other problem, the one that modern people don’t notice, is dynastic. See, marriage wasn’t generally because you loved someone. It was because you had the resources to support a family, and you or your family wanted to pool those resources with someone. It’s about “our family has these resources, and we want that to continue.” It’s about continuity across generations. It’s about making sure that your children and grandchildren have the best possible resources to survive and thrive, whether those resources are land or a trade or a title or money or whatever. In order for this to work, you have to have kids! The family and the family’s resources depend on the married couple having children. If the couple doesn’t have children, the marriage is a failure. And that failure affects not only the couple, but both families. This is a really big problem. And you can’t have just one kid to pass on the family name, because half of all kids die in early childhood. If you want to be safe, you need several kids, to be sure at least one will survive to adulthood (when they can marry and pass on the family name and resources.

You know what happens when a girl has her first pregnancy too young? She is very likely to either die in childbirth, or have complications that destroy her future fertility. Just like Margaret Beaufort. Just like Juliet’s mother. In other words, the marriage is a failure, not just for her, but also for her family, and her husband (who can’t divorce her, it’s not allowed except in extremely rare circumstances), and her husband’s family. So even the people who didn’t have a moral problem with adult men having sex with pubescent girls had a practical problem with girls married too young because you are very likely to destroy the entire purpose of the marriage by doing it. As Shakespeare reminds us in the play through Juliet’s mother having been married too young and only having one child.

Shakespeare is telling us “yeah, this is fucked up. but even if you’re the kind of awful person who doesn’t think girls marrying too young is morally wrong, it’s also a problem for practical and dynastic reasons, don’t forget that by doing this wrong thing you are very likely to destroy what you most want out of it.”

another thing i noticed, the year my local community shakespeare theater did r&j, and i made the costumes so i got to watch the show every night: part of why capulet is telling paris, take your time, get to know each other, no rush, is that he still has his nephew tybalt as his heir. as long as tybalt is in the picture, there is no pressure on juliet to go further with paris, than get acquainted. once tybalt is killed, then suddenly capulet needs an heir, he needs a husband for juliet, now, this week. (the role of capulet is best given to the actor in the company that can do over the top apoplexy, you need to believe his urgency comes at least in part by how clearly he could drop dead any moment from giving himself a stroke)

i feel like this play is often taught in middle schools as if it was somehow relevant to, or about, teen hormone storms. really it's got more to do with the social structures around family and inheritance. leaving that context out makes it confusing, why is capulet suddenly flipping from nice dad to evil dad?

I've been thinking about this play a lot lately. I really wanna highlight that Lord Capulet asks Paris to wait and get to know her, and to woo her, while Tybalt lives. While Tybalt is alive, Juliet has something of a reprieve, and her wellbeing as his only child matters more to Capulet. But once Tybalt has died, the gloves come off. Lord Capulet was worried about his daughter's wellbeing when he felt he had the space to care, but as soon as his dynasty is at stake, as soon as this becomes larger than Juliet's happiness, his consideration for her health and mental wellbeing get thrown away. Which also is due in part to the fact that Capulet's family is implicated in a brawl that has left several dead after the Prince's family EXPLICITLY told the Capulets and Montagues to stop fighting or face dire consequences, AND Capulet is trying to align himself with the Prince's family by marrying Juliet off to County Paris, a relative of the Prince. So to Lord Capulet, it is now less important that Juliet is happy, and more important than he reminds the Prince of his loyalty via this marriage and aligns his family with the Prince's before it's too late. And he believes this must be done, at any cost...until Juliet kills herself. And that's when he realises the devastating cost of treating his family as chess pieces. He realises his wrongdoing far too late.

Seriously Romeo and Juliet is HEAVY on the dynastic politics, and I think you can't fully understand the play without understanding how that all works, especially because the impact of dynastic marriages on women and girls is like. THE POINT of the play

I am personally thinking about my Au(s? technically I have ideas of Arya being known as a girl and one where Arry's a cis boy) of Arya isekai'd into AKOTSK and ends up as a ward to the Targaryens. Cause in my Mulan Style Au none of the Targ's are particularly close to Arry, beyond Egg, but even then its because Arya took it upon herself to sleep on the floor in Eggs room while Aerion prowled around. Baelor nor Maekar tried to get close as they were busy dealing with their heirs and then the passing of their wives. Arry was never a priority and left to the septa's (which ignored as they followed the old gods), maesters, and trainers.

I do think if Baelor and Maekar did choose to be close to Arya, it's be rather rough because Baelor would remind her so much of Ned, but a Ned that would survive and Maekar would be the dad she needed to have survived in her previous life. I don't think Arya and Maekar would but heads beyond possibly playful arguing. Arya is kind of what Maekar would want in a son, vicious yet moral. Maekar would start comparing his sons to Arry and thus cause a vicious wedge between them, isolating them more.

Baelor on the other hand, I do think he and Arya would but heads, would fight. Arya would respect Baelor, would like him, but would see too much Ned in him. Arya knows Baelor isn't the same but when looking for things you lost, similarities magnify. Also, while Arya is honorable, they also are a lot like Dunk in the sense of being willing to do something stupid because it's right. Arya would hit Aerion. She'd take Egg as her squire.

Baelor got like really really really drunk one night sometime before he met Jena and ended up having a bit of misbegotten fun with a random maid as a young man. He didn't really think much of it tbh and lowkey kind of forgot about it, seeing how the woman never really turned back up. Then he married, fathered his kids and just kinda went on with life.

Enter: Ser Duncan the Tall, or Dunk, who is like reasonably sure that he's the bastard of some kinda noble but also isn't exactly keen on finding the father who abandoned his mother to die alone in childbirth. On an off note, wtf are Dragonseeds and why does his squire insist he is one!?

I like to play around with Dragon Seed! Dunk having a dragon once in a while and I figured to ask you what already born dragon do you see him having?

Personally I see Sheepstealer or Silverwing based on personality and characteristics for him just like I see Baelor having Meleys or Maekar having Vermithor.

Thoughts?

I absolutely love Dunk having Sheepstealer because in the book its rather implied that Nettles, its rider, might not have been a Dragonseed at all and got the dragon to trust her through sheer determination alone by feeding it a sheep everyday. A commentary on how the Targaryens may not be as special as they seem to be and their royal blood may just be as common as the rest. Sheepsteeler is rather perfect for Dunkbecause of it. Dragonseed or not. (Also why I hate the removal of Nettles.)

My second favorite is actually Seasmoke for Dunk because the scene of Seasmoke choosing Addam as their rider in hotd will forever live in my mind rent free. Dunk is easy and kind for the both of them, I think Dunk needs a very determined animal. Confidence to balance out his massive anxieties. Also, Seasmoke won't let the Targaryens have a choice on whether or not Dunk's proper, he's Seasmokes, thats what matters.

I just want to talk about the power of commenting on fics for a minute.

I have my main fandom, but when I read in other fandoms, I don't know many of the writers. So I usually just find fics by looking through the tag I want. And if it's a tag I'm really interested in, I'll read every fic in the tag. And if there's a fic I really liked in there, I'll start reading everything by that writer.

So what this means is I'm sometimes reading fics or writers that don't have tons of hits/kudos/comments on their fics, but I found them through some obscure tag I wanted to read. And so I'll get back some really incredibly sweet replies to my comments.

But then, something even more incredible started happening. I'd be reading WIPs by some of these writers and they'd literally start writing the rest of the fic for me. They started asking me what I hoped to see happen or if I had any requests. And when the fic was finished, one of them said the only reason they kept writing the fic was for me.

Sometimes there can be such a lovely connection between the writer and the reader just because you decided to leave a comment. And sometimes you as the commenting reader can become the lone reason why a fic makes its way into the world for all the other readers who come after you.

Humans are space orcs + humans aren't seen as sapient beings LETS GO

The Targs are a shipping company, they all live on the same ship, they are Valyrian, a reptilian race that walks on two legs, has hands with claws, draconian wings, scales all over with a mane that goes from their forehead to in-between their wings, they also have a tail. They are actually a pretty dangerous species, but they have one main problem: they have hollow bones, they are fragile.

So the Targ decide to get a guard dog, they go ti the space kennel of dangerous species and find Dunk there, the biggest human they have ever seen, and they've seen what damage a normally sized human can cause. They are a bit hesitant at first, but the vendor assures them that Dunk, while strong and perfectly capable of protecting, is actually quite docile.

They buy Dunk and for a while they're basically trading him like a pet, the younger are especially attached to him, while the adults are like a bit doubtful because he is extremely gentle and it seems strange to see him as capable of hurting others (even if he keeps on doing things that creep them out immensely, like the time he ran BACKWARDS without looking at where he was going).

Meanwhile Dunk isn't exactly mining the arrangement because, sure he would prefer to be considered sapient and not a pet but like, he had a pretty shitty life on heart, and he's well aware he could have ended up with all kinds of aliens, he's not minding this too much, he has a big ass room that contains a lot of things to do like climbing and a bunch of puzzles, he even has ropes he can swing from and other such things, plus he's pretty pampered all around, and the children are sweet. Now, he would prefer understanding the language, but beggars can't be whiners his old man used to say, and he agrees.

Then one day some bitches attack the ship, and Dunk at first is pretty scared because they have strange weapons and shit (and in general they look a bit scary) but then, while he's sneaking around trying to find his family crew he sees one of them grab the children, and He. Sees. Red.

Let's say that the bad guys are no more, the children are traumatised but thought it was really cool, and the adults are horrified and just happy that Dunk apparently pack bonded.

Now this incident is the start of them realising that Dunka actually is sapient, and over time they teach him the language.

Over all Dunk is actually quite happy, even if he has to pulverise a couple of aliens that get the bright idea to go for the kids, or in general for the Targs.

in yours how does he meet everyone else, like Lyonel and Baelor and such?

So this can be a very long post be prepared!

Lyonel is human or at least mostly human. He is a descendant of human and imposter breeding which happens in once in a great while. He met Dunk once he got off the new arrival ship and had become attached to the tall man when he was a newbie a few seasons ago. He is currently not on this mission since he had to go back to HQ to catch up on some debriefs because he kept putting them off to spend time with Dunk but he will be back!

Maekar Dunk meets when the gruff man grabs Egg and gets flipped upside down by Dunk who reacted to Egg screaming. After explanations are made that Maekar is Egg’s father and the boy ran away onboard the mission ship Dunk is very understandable. He is upset with Egg and makes the boy promise to never do that again to his father as seen that the man was stressed and he loved him so much that he tracked down the ship. Maekar is kinda flustered and gets talked into bunking with Dunk for a bit since his roommate Lyonel isn’t around atm. Just until the next ship comes Maekar states. Maekar is desperate getting himself and Egg back home before it’s noticed that they’ve made close contact and were gone too long. If Egg revealed himself to any human then Dunk and the entire crew would be killed. Maekar normally wouldn’t care but Egg is attached to the giant human and Maekar is slowly becoming fond of him as well. Damn it now Maekar has to do all these annoying tasks!

Baelor’s meeting with Dunk is entirely on purpose. Baelor had been waiting and waiting for his brother to bring back his hatchling and ridding of the evidence of their species ever being on the ship. Almost a month had gone by so Baelor does his duty as future king of his species and space and comes down to fix the mess. He took over a small arrival ship and posed as a crewmate to arrive undetected. The first friendly face he sees is Dunk’s when he gets off the ship and it intrigues him. Dunk presumably thinks Baelor is a new recruit and offers to show him the ropes like Dunk wished someone had done for him. He gives Baelor the tour and offers to partner for him if he ever wants to since he probably didn’t have any trust built with others yet. This is when Maekar and Egg run into Dunk and it brings a whole new tension to the group. Maekar is pale and keeping a tight grip on Egg as the predators of the group notice they are far away from people and near the shadows at the cameras blind spots. If Baelor decided to kill Dunk and everyone on board then Maekar wouldn’t be able to do anything. Egg looks ready to bite his uncle and take Dunk away from the danger. It was all for naught though as Baelor smiles and greets his brother and nephew while explaining that Dunk was an astounding addition to the crew. This begins the imposters plan to hijack the mission ship and take Dunk willingly home with them.
