It’s about the replenishing experience of being outdoors, the other kinds of fauna and flora you see, and even the wacky and wonderful people you meet...To get that full-value birding experience, you have to go to Colorado to see the Prairie Chickens." http://bit.ly/11Yeq2n

This week is National #Pollinators Week! Did You Know: There are an estimated 100,000 species of pollinators worldwide including birds, bees, butterflies, and bats. These pollinators are responsible for the fertilization of 75% of the plants that we rely on for food, and 90% of all flowering plants (over 250,000 known species). #NatureShare Photo: Silver-spotted Skipper on Buttonbush by Kent McFarland To learn more about the Silver-spotted Skipper visit:http://bit.ly/126tLMJ

Throwback Thursday Notes from the Field by Jungle Pete: "There are a variety of benefits to doing things in groups. Consider the last cookout you attended. Someone else bought the food. Someone else cooked and cleaned up. There was less risk of being eaten by a predator..." http://bit.ly/15DMKmi
Traveling Knots: Of the six subspecies of Red Knots found worldwide, rufa migrates the farthest. It flies over 20,000 miles round trip from its breeding grounds in the Canadian arctic along the eastern seaboard of North America and down to its wintering area at the tip of South America. But these birds are in trouble. Over the past decade, aerial counts of the rufa population in Tierra del Fuego went from more than 56,000 to just 10,000 birds. Some biologists believe that without intervention, they may go extinct.

A Skein of #Birds:
Have you ever wondered why some bird flocks fly in a “V” formation? First, it is to conserve energy by taking advantage of the upwash vortex fields created by the wings of the birds in front. The rising air helps lessen the load. Each bird can reduce drag by up to 65%, increasing their range by 71%. Of course the leader of the formation gains no benefit, causing this position to be regularly traded. The other reason is to facilitate orientation and communication among individual birds and to create fewer blind spots. To learn more about the Canada Goose visit NatureShare: http://bit.ly/152FFff
