It does not end only here but there will be increments according to their positions (first, second and third) in recognized National / International competition including retirement benefits. A secured future is one of the main reasons for the rise of women in physical contact sports especially in Haryana.
The cash awards and other incentives are also given to the medal winners of national and international competitions by Sports Department. The highest cash award being Two crore for gold in Olympics, One crore in Asian Games and 70 lakhs in Commonwealth Games. A national gold medallist wins 15,000 rupees. Recently in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the Haryana state government announced cash awards of Rs 1 crore, Rs 50 lakh and Rs 25 lakh for gold, silver and bronze medal winners and also a cash award of Rs 5 lakh for all state participants. Such enormous encouragement from the state government is bound to drive youngsters to take up sports as their career.
The cash incentives and employment opportunities from the government have been a big factor in growth of more female wrestlers and boxers. Many awards like Arjuna award, Bhim award etc also come with cash rewards. So, athletes get motivated to perform their best in order to create a name for them and also get financially stable. They are even given cars as rewards and sometimes houses as well. International recognition for a state is a pride and Haryana as per its sports policies rewards its players which gives a zeal for the athletes to give more reasons for the nation to be proud of them.
There are many other facilities also provided to women in physical contact sports like coaches are provided for training, new equipments, students are given scholarship for maximum of 3000 rupees for a year, medical facilities and even bus concession. For encouragement of women participation, Women Sports Festivals are being organized at block, district and state level.
Women in such sports have seen a change in the last decade and have faced criticism from the society. But with all the hassles, women continue to follow their dreams. Their parents supported them and encouraged them to pursue a sport that was only known for men. Indian female boxing and wrestling has international recognition due to the national and state government’s efforts by creating a platform for females to step out and create a new vision for themselves.
National women wrestlers' coach Kripa Shanker says, “Wrestling and boxing are no longer a male sport, females are making are country proud and the governments' incentive is one of the real reasons for more and more female participation.”
