On 26 April 1929, the cargo sailing ship belonging to the Hamburg shipping company F. Laeisz was caught in a severe storm in the Le Maire Strait off Tierra del Fuego. The masts broke – the ship was lost.
Fortunately, the 25-strong crew were rescued by the Chilean steamer ‘Alfonso’.
