The flood of Isle kids coming over the bridge was never ending, but Evie was still searching through the crowd for a familiar mop of blond hair. She was not expecting to see her baby brother, taller than her now, coming over the bridge.
“Hazel!”
Much as he wanted to look for Evie, Hazel was just too overwhelmed by the surging emotions that threatened to bring him to his knees, too focused on not collapsing in the middle of the bridge, to even focus on the faces pressing in on him. But then an all-too-familiar voice called his name and his head snapped around to find his older sister’s face. The scrawny boy slid between other kids as he made his way towards her. Not wasting time with words, Hazel bent down and picked Evie up with his arms around her waist.
“Missed ya,” he said in her ear, just loud enough to be heard over the cheers of the masses.
Evie was crying tears of joy, as she was picked up and hugging her baby brother as tightly as she dared.
“What happened to my little brother?” Evie asked over the roar of the crowd, the smile never leaving her face.
“You got so tall!”
