Dolly Sods Wilderness is a beloved destination for campers and day-hikers from throughout the Mid-Atlantic, which means on a nice weekend, it's hard to find a parking spot anywhere near a trailhead along the forest road. I lucked out yesterday due to storms in the vicinity, which kept the traffic down. I had Rorhbaugh Trail mostly to myself. This trail is notorious for transforming into a boot-sucking slog after heavy rains, but that view of Red Creek Canyon on the other end . . . breathtaking.
Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) is just starting to bloom on the plateau and should be near peak by next weekend. Another wildflower bomb is fringed bleeding heart (Dicentra eximia), which clumps gorgeously in open spots along the trail - it blooms continuously from mid-spring to fall as long as there are no extended hot spells. The mountain wood-sorrel (Oxalis montana) is also starting to bloom. A couple miles up the road at Alder Run Bog, the early azalea (Rhododendron prinophyllum) is in knockout form and bunchberry (Cornus canadensis), a dwarf dogwood typically found growing much farther north, is just starting to bloom. Harder to find in the glowing red and yellow sphagnum of the bog itself is spoonleaf sundew (Drosera intermedia), one of two species found growing there.
Let your colors shine, markers and gouache.
