Optional prompt for your Bagginshield event, if it strikes your fancy? Something including both a squirrel + the line (in some form or another) "That's not how my mother used to do it."
This one turned out in an unexpected way but Iâm quite content with it. Itâs different from what Iâm used to write so thatâs nice. Thank you for the prompt, it was a very interesting one!
(Btw, here Joli is DĂsâ husband.)
ââ-
âThatâs not how my mother used to do it.â Said Thorin for the hundredth time in the span of one hour.
Bilboâs eye twitched and didnât bother looking at his husband, Yavanna forbid he ended up killing him. âI know Thorin, you tell me this every Yule and yet you donât tell me the exact recipe so youâll have to conform with my lowly excuse of a pork pie,â Bilbo said scathingly. Â
âYour pie is delicious Bilbo, Iâm merely stating that thatâs not the way my mother used to make it.â Thorin turned the page of the book Bilbo was sure he had never actually begun reading. âIf I knew how she made it I would have prepared it myself, but I can assure you she didnât add cinnamon to it.â
Bilbo snorted as he made a show of adding more cinnamon to his pork. This was a discussion they had every year, at this point, it was more for the theatrics than anything. Both knew that FrĂs pork pie recipe was a secret she had taken to her grave and that was it. Still, it was nice to include her in some way on their traditions, it made Thorin happy and prone to talk about the happy memories he had of his mother, something Bilbo always looked forward to. âAs if! As sad as that sounds, you can even burn water. You have many talents dear, but cooking is not one of them.â Bilbo put the lid on the pan and turned to look at his husband, who was still pretending to be reading.Â
He met eyes with Thorin and unable to hold it anymore they burst into laughter. The first time Thorin had told that Bilbo had been offended but after time it had become a tradition. KĂli liked to comment about their weirdness but for them, it was special, just another way to include the family that could no longer be with them in presence. It was similar to the way DĂs sometimes liked to wear the well-worn cape Joli had given her during their first anniversary, the one with the buttons shaped like squirrels, or the way she and Thorin drunk a mug of chocolate spiked with rum when telling anecdotes of Frerin.
So it was okay if KĂli didnât fully understand it, as long as Thorin and he did, it was enough.
Third prompt is for my beloved @navyfeather who asked for: "Always a bridesmaid, never a bride" or in the case of Thorin or Bilbo, always a best man, never a groom'. I had a blast with this one! Hope you enjoy it. â¤
-----
Bilbo nervously smoothed down the non-existent wrinkles of his white waistcoat.
He might be nervous but he knew this is the best choice he had ever made. Marrying Thorin was the best choice he would ever make.
He still could remember what it was like before they met each other. The loneliness and the awkwardness at having to explain to his friends and relatives that no, Bilbo hadnât brought anyone with him this time either.  Â
It was funny to think that one of those dreaded weddings was what had brought them together. At the time it had been Dwalin and Oriâs wedding, both Thorin and him acting as their best men.Â
They found a kindred soul on each other at being the only single people at the wedding. Before Bilbo knew it they had agreed to go on weddings together to avoid any more uncomfortable situations and pitiful glances. They kept their arrangement for almost three years without any change until blasted Lobelia had gotten married.Â
It had been quite an awful wedding, the only one who seemed pleased with herself was the bride. Wasting no time she had said some scathing things to Bilbo and Thorin hadnât reacted well. Enough been said that they almost got kicked out of the wedding when Thorin threw his drink on top of Lobeliaâs fatherâs head. It had been a mess and Bilbo had loved every second of it.Â
In the end, the only kiss Bilbo had cared for that day was the one Thorin had given him under the acorn tree he had in his garden, his raven hair still caked with whipped cream and bits of sponge cake from when things had escalated and Lobelia had thrown part of her wedding cake at Thorin.Â
More than two years have passed since day and now it was Bilboâs turn. He had less than five minutes to get out there where Thorin was probably already waiting for him so they could walk together down the aisle.Â
Bilbo took a deep breath and shared a smile with his parents. Yes, he was nervous but that was fine, this was the best decision he had ever made and Bilbo had no regrets.
Second prompt posted! This one is for @theklynnsmith who asked for Thorin making Bilbo a Valentine's meal. Hope you like it dear! â¤
-----------
It wasn't going well.Â
Thorin grit his teeth as he threw away another batch of scorched cakes that looked more like black balls of ash than what they were supposed to be. He had almost run out of material and Bilbo was about to arrive.Â
He should have paid more attention when his grandmother had tried to teach him the arts of baking.Â
Thorin had wanted to make something special for Bilbo when he had explained that Valentineâs festivity to him, now â despite his best efforts â he only had burnt pastries and chocolate that tasted oddly spicy in the shape of a misshapen heart. He took a deep breath, shaking away the disappointment and frustration and got to work once again. By his beard he would have something decent to give Bilbo by the end of the day, even if it was the last thing he did he would see it done!
-----
Bilbo smiled from his hiding spot behind a pillar. The royal kitchens smelt like Smaug himself had burnt them and Thorinâs frustrated growls could be heard even from outside the dining room, and yet Bilboâs heart shone with love.Â
He felt giddy and had to suppress an excited giggle behind his hand.Â
He knew that whatever Thorin gave him wouldnât have the best taste but Bilbo was sure it would be the best meal he had ever had.Â
Bilbo had never been given a Valentineâs gift since those were only reserved for those in love. Thorin knew that, Bilbo had told him, and yet that silly dwarf had gone out of his way to make sure Bilbo could enjoy a Valentineâs meal â asking Balin to cover him up for the day and leaving his heavy duties for the sake of Bilbo.
If he ever had any doubts about his love for Thorin with this sole action they would have disappeared. Bilboâs heart had chosen well and he couldnât wait to taste whatever Thorin had made him and give him a well-deserved kiss for all his troubles.Â
If you are still doing promts, how about Bilbo being a vet and Thorin coming to him with his sick pet raven
I think this has been sitting on my inbox for almost an entire year?? Iâm so sorry it took me so long nonny.Â
This is the first of the five prompts I have filled for Valentineâs day. Iâll post the next one in a couple of hours and youâll find all the prompts tagged with Bagginshieldâs Valentine, in case you want to read the rest. Hope you enjoy this ficlet and happy Valentineâs day for you all!!Â
ââââ-
âUhmâŚâ Hamfast hesitated.
âYes?â Asked Bilbo without looking up from the blood test results he was holding. When the vet nurse didnât say anything Bilbo finally looked up. âWhat is it?â
âHeâs here again.â Said Hamfast, at last.
Bilbo sighed, putting down the papers. âDid he tell you what happened this time?â
âHe said Burack is making a weird breathing noise.â Explained Hamfast.
Bilbo snorted, his mouth curling into a smile involuntarily. âOf course he is.â
Bilbo stepped into the waiting room, and sure enough, Thorin and his raven were there. They came to his clinic so often everyone was more than acquainted with him and Burack. Â Except for the very first time Thorin had no reason to come back, his raven was the healthiest bird Bilbo had ever seen, despite his owner claims.
It was time to end this, Bilbo was sure the poor bird was tired more than a tad fed up with all the hassle that was coming for a check-up and as much as he liked Bilbo no one enjoyed to be prodded on a daily basis.
âThorin please come in,â exclaimed Bilbo, a soft smile planted on his face.
Once they were both inside the consulting room, Thorin pulled Burack out from his rather fancy carrier. âHello, Bilbo.â
âHello Thorin, and hello to you too Burack,â added Bilbo, brushing his thumb against the ravenâs beak. âHamfast told me heâs been having trouble with his breathing.â
âYes. Heâs been like that for a couple of days, I realized one night when he came to snuggle with me. I want to discard the possibility of it being aspergillosis.â Explained Thorin in a monotone tone, not quite meeting Bilboâs eyes.
Bilbo simply hummed and pressed his lips together when they threatened to turn up in an amused smile. âWell, letâs see whatâs wrong with you, my boy.â Bilbo carefully put his stethoscope against Burackâs chest while Thorin rubbed feathered back comfortingly.
The bird, for his part, remained unbothered; too used to being auscultated by now and with how often he came by he probably knew he would get delicious treats if he stayed still.
Unsurprisingly, Bilbo found absolutely nothing odd with his breathing. At twenty years old Burack was in the prime of his life and with how well Thorin took care of him itâll a cold day in hell before Burack got aspergillosis. Sure enough, it was common for birds to have infections in the respiratory tract but Bilbo highly doubted Burack would be getting them anytime soon.
Bilbo eyed Thorin as he mechanically checked Burack for what must have been the fifth time that month. Bilbo knew why he kept coming back â and so did all his staff, Bilbo was sure they had a bet going on â but he didnât seem to be about to ask Bilbo out today either. He wasnât quite sure why he was so hesitant, Bilbo had made sure to give him all the right cues to show he was receptive to Thorin advances.
Very well then, Bilbo had never been one to wait meekly for others and he wasnât about to start now. âWhat do you say about this Friday at seven?â
âExcuse me?â Asked Thorin, his brow furrowed in confusion.
âI think ââ Bilbo trailed off, licking his lips and feeling his face starting to heat. ââ Burack would appreciate that we meet without him being in the middle of it.â
Bilbo took out the treats he kept especially for Burack and gave him some. Thorinâs face was taking a very endearing red tinge and Bilbo wanted nothing more than press a kiss in one of his bearded cheeks. âBurack has nothing wrong, by the way. Although you probably already know that.â Bilbo added with a teasing smile.
Thorin looked down, idly rubbing the back of his neck, in obvious embarrassment. âI apologize for that. I wanted to talk more with you but I wasnât quite sure how to ask you for your number and I was afraid you might find it improper since Burack is one of your patients.ââWell, Iâm not going to date him, am I?â Said Bilbo. âI thought I was making my interest in you quite clear, I think I did everything but throw myself in your lap,â Bilbo admitted quietly with an embarrassed smile.
âIâm not used to the intricacies of flirting, Iâm afraid,â Thorin explained with a chuckled. âItâs been a long while since Iâve been interested in someone.â
âI would say you did pretty good, Iâm quite taken with you,â Bilbo said as he walked towards Thorin and took his hand. âSo⌠Dinner at seven?â
âYes. I- Yes, I really would like that.â Thorin replied, intertwining their fingers and brushing the back of Bilboâs hand with his thumb.

New fic! I just posted 'A Complaint A Day' - it's an 8k sickfic. Bilboâs coming down with something and stops complaining! đą Thorin is on red alert, and soon the rest of the dwarves are, too!
Rated T just to be safe, but it's a very mild fic and ends happily. đ
Featuring sweet worried dwarves and married Thorin and Bilbo. â¤ď¸
Richard Armitage really didn't have to go so hard on having Thorin, even gold-sick Thorin, His Royal Assness Under the Mountain, look so utterly in love with Bilbo at all times, but he did that for us and I thank him for it.
Bagginshield's Valentine!!!
Valentine's day is around the corner so for this year I have decided to take short prompts that I will write and post throughout the 14th.
Feel free to leave as many as you like and the sappier the better, tho you can leave smutty ones if you want đ, or even family centered ones if that's what you like. I'm up for pretty much anything. đ¤
I will be taking prompts until the 12th!

âBalin and Dwalin were written as Thorinâs closest confidantes, Balin as the Old Warrior advisor and father figure, Dwalin as an equal in all but name, his friend, his advisor, and his sparring partner. Thorin has a relationship with every one of his men, but thoese two and his sisterâs sons, Fili and Kili, are particularly close.â
