Tarot-style cards I made for our game jam. The idea was to illustrate a mythological animal corresponding to each animal in the zodiac.

I took inspiration from the Smith-Waite tarot deck and tried to diversify the myth & folklore. It was a fun learning experience!

Also designed our silly antagonist :P

"Yes, Elrond, I do dare," Maglor tells him, shrugging. "Who better than I to tell you of conquest? I conquered you. I renamed you. I loved you. I love you. All these things are true at once. Names are the most efficient instruments of conquest. Not a language in itself with all the idioms and evasions therein, but a single, repeated utterance that can brand a thing and tie it to oneself. A name, like a prayer, is conditional on obedience. It is meaningless if not answered to. It can preserve and punish, claim lineage and sever it. Perhaps, my dear boy, you may fear your history less if you cease to believe that names are neutral conveniences, and admit that the act of naming is no benevolence."

SUMMARY: At a parade celebrating the the founding of Imladris, Elrond spots an unforgettable face in the crowd, one he’s not seen for millennia. To his delight and apprehension, it is indeed Maglor Fëanorian, who brings with him two things. First, a suspiciously tame monkey he insists isn’t a metaphor. Second, the groundshaking admission that Elwing and Eärendil’s sons were not named Elrond and Elros.

Or, a story about adoption, conquest, stolen names, and a love letter of sorts to Maglor, Elwing, and Elrond.
