despite the plan for the following day, that night barbara was able to rest peacefully, the comfort of curling up beside dick’s side was able to distract her mind from the restless thoughts that ran through it. catching up with her father, unable to mention anything related to her secret identity had taken it’s toll, but it was for his own safety. being the commissioner of gotham had already placed a target on his back, she couldn’t have him stressing over her safety too. the couple had gone over the plan multiple times and to barbara it seemed simple enough, using her computer skills to disarm the security system of the building and to figure out where exactly this cure was located. even if it had been a while since the pair worked undercover, there was still a certain thrill that came with it, and as she glanced up towards dick, she returned the squeeze of his hand.

“i know, but you have to promise me you’ll do the same.” a reassuring smile rested on her features, though it grew once she caught the glimmer of his ring from the corner of her eye. but she knew she couldn’t overthink this. at least, not right now. even if it did induce a pleasant flutter within, she couldn’t get distracted. “and if for any reason the link cuts out, leave. i installed a tracker on our phones just in case.” she squeezed his hand once more and leaned her head against his shoulder. “okay? i’m ready when you are, hunk wonder. we’ve got this.” she hushed her tone, pressing a kiss to his jaw before stepping forward, straightening her exterior as the automated doors opened, “excuse me, hi.” they made a beeline towards the front desk, greeting the receptionist. “my husband needs some assistance.” she turned back to dick with a sympathetic smile. “it’s alright, hun. you can tell them.”

they were too alike for their own good, always worrying about each other’s safety first and foremost. “i will,” he assured, giving a firm nod of his head. he had no intention of sticking around once they got what they needed, but if all went well, their intrusion might go unnoticed, especially with bab’s skills with a computer. all dick needed to do was provide a window of time for her to sneak in and take what they needed. easy enough for someone who’d always known how to put on a good show, but he knew better than to let his guard down. “you amaze me sometimes,” he mumbled under his breath, adoration thick in his tone as she pressed a kiss to his jaw. as soon as the doors open, dick’s expression shifted, now one composed of fear and uncertainty; so the show began. “the cure—the hope serum i was interested in uh—,” he made a point of casting a flustered glance towards barbara, trying his best to make the exchange as authentic as possible. “in taking it,” he said, lowering his tone to a hushed whisper. then he reached out to thread his fingers with barbara’s and though that was only meant to sell the image of people in love, it was true to meaning, and perhaps the only thing he didn’t need to feign. “i want her to be safe, i don’t want to put her at risk,” he explained to the nurse, who, at first, had seemed weary of the two. but now she seemed moved by their exhibit, her lips taking on a sympathetic smile as she motioned them forward. immediately they were being led away from the hospital’s waiting room and towards two large doors at the end of a hallway. dick took note of the hallways they passed, seeing which ones led to exits and which ones seemed to lead into another hallway, almost as if they were navigating through a large maze. when they arrived at the door, the nurse pulled an id from her pocket and swiped it against a black scanner situated directly to the right of one of the doors. when they swung open, dick could make out what seemed to be another waiting room, only this one was specifically for mutants and metas. he noticed, however, that this waiting room was void of patients and he wasn’t sure what whether that was a good sign or a bad one. as the nurse began talking about the process, dick glanced behind her towards a door that read ‘no patients beyond this point’. that was where the information they’d need would be. “i’d like my wife to stay behind, if that’s okay....i just don’t want her to have to see,” he said to the nurse as they began to lead him towards an isolated room. he glanced back at barbara, offering her a small nod as the nurse agreed to his request.

it was faint; a thin line running just above the ridge of his shoulder and sloping down into into shoulder blade. the raised flesh was disrupted by creases in the flesh where the skin was unable to heal properly. but it was only one amidst many that covered his body, all evidence of his life as a vigilante, and dick had all but forgotten about that one until he could feel the ghosting of barbara’s fingers against it. her soft touch sent a shiver down his bare spine, his shoulder blades shifting the closer she got to them. again and again she traced the same scar, and dick’s eyes fluttered shut, his breathing slowing.

when she asked about it, he turned to face her, lips stretching into a smile as he reached out and traced her cheek. the dark obstructed her features, but he could almost make them out with touch alone, starting with her jaw, her lips, the ridge of her nose, and finally her eyes. his hand fell away as he went back to the scar, his brows creasing as he thought back to face of the person who’d given the scar to him.

slade. it’d been slade. he remembered the flash of orange and black arcing at the edge of his vision before the blade was digging into his flesh. it’d been quick, precise; that’s how slade worked.

“it’s an old one,” dick said softly, now that he remembered. “slade had been trying to recruit members for a new team when i was with the titans.” he laughed slightly, head shaking. slade had always been resourceful at least, dick hadn’t expected any less from the assassin. “it didn’t work out, obviously, but we still got into it. you know how he is, always likes to fight his way out even when the doors wide open.”

dick’s smile returned as he could see the sleep beginning to weigh barbara’s eyes down, his chest vibrating with laughter. the day had been long, he couldn’t blame her. he pressed a kiss to her temple as she began to drift off, and dick soon followed. / @fkabatgirl
