i have hella muse for a plot where the guy is a total small town farmer boy. like getting through high school was a pain cause he isn’t book smart or anything like that. all he’s ever known is hands on work (working on cars, farming, tinkering with household items, gardening, etc.) one day he’s selling fruits and veggies at his family owned stand on a hot summer day, and he meets a girl who’s the total opposite of him. she’s all brains, works at a law firm maybe, drives a benz. she’s everything he’s not. however, that southern charm will swoon any girl who’s had her heart broken one too many times by the same type of guy. he’s different, and she loves that about him. idk i just think it would be cute. could be m/f, m/m, or f/f.

kihyun has a recurring dream where—

he turns to jaebum and says, “i love you.” it’s quiet, unbidden, never meant to escape the cage of his ribs. sometimes they’re sitting in the league offices, jaebum leaning on his desk with a sheaf of papers in his hands, brows furrowed as he reads through countless injury reports. kihyun’s hand rests inches away from jaebum’s, and he almost reaches forward to take it, to remind jaebum that he is not alone. but his arm is frozen in place and his heart too loud and—

other times, they’re in jaebum’s house, lying on the couch. kihyun’s legs draped over jaebum’s lap, the remote dangling lazily from his fingers. he flips through channels—news, dramas, variety, music shows—and finds nothing worth watching. jaebum complains (“just pick one, kiki!”) and tickles the soles of his feet when kihyun ignores him. he squirms and almost kicks jaebum in the face, but jaebum laughs and moves his hands up to kihyun’s vulnerable sides. and all kihyun can think is—fuck, because he craves jaebum’s touch like a starving man and he wants him to—

and then they are in the middle of a battlefield. kihyun tastes blood and metal in his mouth. scanning the field for jaebum, for somi, he tries to take a step forward and stumbles, sinking to his knees when his legs can no longer support his weight. he leans on his warhammer to remain upright, trying to blink past the haze settling over his vision. he wants to speak, to call out, but his voice is a hoarse whisper. and then he sees him limping in this direction, cradling his arm to his chest. jaebum’s face lights up when he sees kihyun, and he all but runs over to him, cupping his face with his free hand. jaebum runs a thumb over his lips, wiping away the blood, and kihyun closes his eyes. he wants—he wants to say it before he di—

or they lie in bed, limbs tangled jaebum’s fingers tracing letters into kihyun’s back. drunk but not tired, not yet, and kihyun hates him for a brief, charged moment, hates him for having the luxury to do this and then walk away like nothing happened. but he loves jaebum too and he walked into this with his eyes open. he turns to look at jaebum’s content face, eyes heavy with sleep, and reaches out to touch his face. kihyun wets his lips and—

he turns to jaebum and says, “i love you,” but jaebum only sucks in a small breath, half-startled, blinking slowly. he doesn’t touch kihyun, doesn’t look at him. curls away, erecting a wall between them, and he can hear jaebum build it brick by brick. “thank you,” jaebum says finally. it’s mournful, apologetic, and in that moment kihyun knows: thank you means i don’t love you back.

the mature response would be to ignore that and return to their ( now cold ) soup, but he’s not—and has never been—the sort of person to embrace maturity. certainly not in the middle of a fancy restaurant for which he had to reserve a table a month and a half in advance for, one where the appetizers alone are going to set him back a few paychecks for. it was supposed to be a nice gesture—something to show he cares—but this isn’t his sort of venue. it’s too stuffy and formal. suffocating, though maybe that’s just the tie tied too tight around his neck.

he tugs at it absentmindedly, nails scraping against irritated skin, and leans back in his chair. “i’m not gonna talk you out of it,” he says, the beginnings of a smile creeping onto his face. lacing his fingers together, he lays them on his stomach and raises an eyebrow, paying no attention to the disapproving looks being thrown his way. screw decorum; it’s boring. stiff upper lip and all that is a rich and pretentious man’s world, not his. “i’m thrilled, actually. wait,” he pauses and raises a finger in thought. “i’m the one giving you the grey hairs, right?”

but jokes aside, the thought of being together like this, even with grey hairs, makes him feel warm inside. “so i should celebrate—sounds like you’re planning to keep me around till then, huh?”

with his drink in one hand and the other holding nothing, he uses that hand to rest his chin on his palm, his fingers covering his cheek. “me though?” he asks, smiling at the other’s assumption. “you’re not totally wrong on that. i just needed a bit of an energy boost for the night. having coffee at night is somewhat different from having it at the morning.” he takes a sip of his drink after he speaks, taking time to savour the flavour of it before he puts it down to speak to the boy again. “not to mention,” he starts, “i’m kind of desperate for some company at the moment. so having yours is wonderful.” 

“you’re not.” the statement is delivered in the same flat tone as the rest of his answers, unwilling to engage the man further. perhaps it’s unfair—his siblings have bemoaned his lack of desire to be social in the past, but what’s the point of interacting with people so fundamentally different from him? so insignificant? “if you’re going to sit there, let’s agree to cut the bullshit.” there’s nothing he hates more than faking nice. johnny does not fake anything—except his own existence.

is there anything different about drinking coffee during the day versus drinking coffee at night? he doesn’t even want to ask—doesn’t want an answer. “alcohol would be a stronger energy boost” he’s assuming. drinking isn’t much for johnny; he hates not being in control of his emotions, his thoughts, his own faculties. it’s alright when he is the one causing the lack of control, but that’s a different story.

he snorts, undignified, and pushes his textbooks away. “i’m a bitter pill to swallow.” wonderful certainly isn’t the word he would use to describe his company. “i would say just desperate, period.” the stranger’s easy manner makes him decidedly uneasy, though, a feat the man should feel proud of. “so you’re a glutton for punishment, then. that’s cool—if you interest me enough, i’ll keep you plenty entertained.” the stoic expression cracks into a half-smile, savage in its beauty. he’s being generous and borderline indulgent, but—

well, nothing’s more dangerous than johhny’s boredom either.

and it was true. while his main reason had been to come out for her, it was nice to actually mingle with society once in a while, even if there was always the need to look behind him, making sure no one was following him or picking up on the fact that it was him. “you still sound annoyed though,” he muttered, wondering if maybe he really had done the wrong thing by tagging along.

her type? she hadn’t really thought about since her first few years of university, when dating and getting in a relationship was more of a reality than now. or maybe it was just that she had the luxury of being picky back then. “i don’t know,” she answered honestly. she used to like the bad boy type, but she blamed the fantasies of a teenage girl for that. “maybe someone… who makes me laugh.” god, the most generic answer ever. feeling awkward, she coughed and added, “someone i feel comfortable with, you know? who’d hold my hand while we walk even though he doesn’t have to. and has a nice smile. the smile is the most important.”

jinyoung had a point. maybe she was digging too deep into something that really… wasn’t. besides, he was an adult. he knew what he should and shouldn’t do, probably better than she did. “alright,” she said finally, uncrossing her arms and letting them drop to her sides. “i get it. you deserve to have a good time too. but next time, just give me a heads up so we can find you a better disguise.” no beards, hats, or stupid sunglasses—she missed seeing his eyes, reading the expressions on his face.

did she really sound that put off? “i’m turning into a mom,” hyewon grumbled. shaking her head, she finally gave him a genuine smile and grabbed his hand once more. “i’m sorry, jinyoung. i like spending time with you.” and hyewon meant it. he was funny and surprisingly laid-back and—not that far from her ideal type, if she was being honest, but boundaries. “well, if we’re doing then, then how about grabbing a coffee first? i’m tired from the train ride.”

the night reminds him of many things of his pass that he’s unable to let go. and though he can’t spend much time basking in the sunlight, he didn’t mind that at all. he’d rather it be night forever so that he could spend half of that time charming strangers and the other half to himself as he walks through the night and enjoys himself. 

it’s a perfect, but unrealistic scenario. though, sterling was always an imaginative person. 

he looks away from the window and back at the stranger across the table. not wanting to keep the awkward silence, sterling clears his throat to hopefully get the other’s attention. “so… what’s a handsome man like you doing in a coffee shop at this time?” he asks with a smirk. 

as expected, the stranger sits down at his table after their brief exchange. what surprises johnny is that the man does not bombard him with irritating questions and small talk. his first impression suggested otherwise. johnny is content to lapse into companionable silence, however. in fact, he prefers the soundtrack of the cafe to mindless chatter. but human beings, he’s learned, are programmed to talk. introverts and extroverts alike, one loves nothing more than the sound of their voice.

so when the stranger chooses to eventually break the silence, johnny is prepared. should have been prepared, had he said anything else. the borderline pick up line comes out of left field; johnny almost spills his drink all over his lap. a little bit sloshes onto his shirt regardless and stains the white an ugly beige. setting the mug down on the table, he leans back in his chair studies the stranger with narrowed eyes. “roasting a pig,” he says flatly. from the textbooks surrounding him, johnny thinks it’s obvious. “trying to study in peace,” he finally answers.

handsome. of course johnny is, but the word sounds strange when it’s directed at him. “you?” his lips thin, pressing into a straight line. “nothing better to do with your time?” johnny isn’t charming enough to play a game of words, but he is distracted enough to indulge the stranger. only for a few minutes.

“that’s still pretty quick, don’t you think?” he didn’t want to imagine her undressing anyone after the third date. had she gone on any dates lately? if so, was it the same person three times? no no, he didn’t want to know. but how would they date? aish, why was this so messy?

when they were finally free from the crowds, she was asking him why they were here. or rather, why he was here. “why? i can’t want to tag along?” he crossed his arms, as if he were offended that she was asking such a question. “is my company that bad?” he narrowed his eyes at her before realizing that she couldn’t see that he was doing so. “you seem annoyed that i wanted to tag along.”

hyewon may have gone a bit overboard. she couldn’t believe she’d actually implied she took things to the bedroom after a third date. it was all in the spirit of the joke, to see just how much she could fluster jinyoung, but—god, she really needed a filter of some kind. or to think over what she was going to say before it spilled out of her mouth. hyewon had a case of perpetual foot in mouth—except, you know, in a filthier sense.

but jinyoung’s cheeks were red enough to ease some of her own mortification, though she couldn’t figure out why he cared so much about her and what she did. they were… boss and employee, nothing less and nothing really more. he wasn’t supposed to consider her feelings about anything. “maybe, maybe not,” she said, her tone taking on a sing-song quality. “go on three dates with me and you can find out.” but her laughter was cut short by her need to add, “i’m joking—don’t panic.” she didn’t want to give herself a lecture about boundaries again. “i don’t think we’re each other’s types anyway.”

honestly, hyewon was worried about him. this was potentially the most reckless thing a celebrity could do, so there had to be some reason behind it. she didn’t expect this sort of reaction, however. what was jinyoung getting defensive for? “you didn’t answer my question,” hyewon pointed out. arms still crossed, she tapped her foot impatiently, refusing to let him weasel out of talking. “i’m not annoyed; i don’t mind going shopping with you! but…” ugh, she hated sounding like a killjoy. “if there’s something you want to do, tell me and i’ll help you out.”

after paying and walking over to the waiting area for his drink, he looks around himself to try and find the issue. eventually, he spots someone out of the few people and he sees an empty seat (was it empty? there wasn’t someone there, so he assumes it is) at their table and he found it wonderful. simply wonderful for what he plans to do next. 

once his drink is finished and is given to him, he walks over to said table. “excuse me, is this seat taken?” he asks. if they say yes, then it’s an easy ticket to not being bored for this night with a cappuccino in his hand. 

of all the modern inventions, sugary caffeinated drink in his hand is by far one of the best.

seo johnny looks the type to take his coffee black—no sugar, no milk. it is as dark and unappealing as his soul, his siblings would tease. he doesn’t believe in needless frivolities, and the fifty kinds of coffee available at the cafe strike him as excessive. if the goal is to keep one’s self alert and awake, wouldn’t the basic drink suffice? but people here do everything in spades. emphasis is placed on giving the consumer options and enjoyment. as a university freshman would say, fuck capitalism and our consumer economy.

as cynical and edgy as he may appear ( or pretend to be ), johnny has vices. one of them happens to be this delicious and overpriced drink, more fitting for a carnival than a quiet coffee shop after dark. he’ll never admit to it, but the only reason he frequents the place is for this. it is an all-consuming addiction. johnny has a regular order; the fact alone should be enough to alarm anyone who knows him even in passing. routine in life is not something he ascribes to. 

and yet, like clockwork, he finds himself in the shop on his way home from classes. lured in by the promise of his favourite coffee, he spreads his books over an empty table near the window and resigns himself to an evening of work. it’s tedious rather than difficult. the sheer amount he needs to finish for his classes means he’s on his third drink of the evening with many more to come.

distractions are unexpected; the majority of the patrons at the shop are either students like him or aspiring authors chasing the ‘writer at a coffeeshop’ aesthetic. both groups keep to themselves, too busy and stressed to bother anyone else. anomalies are rare, but this night brings one who chooses johnny’s table to break the comfortable din. nothing about johnny screams approachable. if nothing else, he finds the stranger’s gumption amusing. still, johnny barely spares the man a glance. “and if i say no?” he flips to the next page in his textbook idly. “will you sit down anyway?” asking for permission a mere courtesy.

well. the stranger’s lucky. johnny is not in a terrible mood. “do what you want.” he finally raises his eyes and gives the man a cursory glance. he is… shorter and more yellow than he expected. “but i’m not good company.”
