an anomaly for resilience, born in a village off the northern west bank city of nablus, he sat as I walked down the steps of downtown amman, curious eyes staring & yet dazed with passers by, I could not resist, but to sit beside him as those eyes told tales I was sure of.
aged by situations & not time, unemployed yet also experienced fruits & vegetables seller, he spoke of a once time that…
how far can one get close to the expression of their own momentary thought or feeling?
and how far can the closeness of fear bring about the strength to create a change?
two questions faced each portrayed, and two questions that received a defence of an answer with a clear reality on the surprise by such a question. a surprise of not having no one ask on it for the simple purpose of care.
we identify on expressions from far distances we feel close to, relate to, yet fearsome to an extent by our human nature to express them out loud.
composing the expressions in elements of two simple questions was a learning process far closer to a reality to what I express in moments that I yet stand to say I can ever stop from learning.

street photography series: the far closeness how far can one get close to the expression of their own momentary thought or feeling?
clarity of expressions exposed in lives walking in a life that is ever so changing daily, and within a lucid city that is far from clear of cracks.
intrigued by continuous change through the passing of 365 days, it can only be said that no matter whom was passed through the frames of the ancient pebbled streets and corners, the toll of the city’s burdens on its inhabitance can only be seen off their faces and reactions to questions on how they manage their lives. from fears of decaying instability in their socio-economic life, to worries of days to come, with all that they might bring from further political unrest.
yet, smiles passed overcame the frowns as the glimmer of lucid hope was ever so revealing even in the roughest words described in stories heard. hope that strength will be kept through the ageless ungendered defined gaps, and even more that places fears aside.
the holy city is by far the city of hope, and a city of people that truly make it what it is now and will make it for future generations to come.
or so I hope.

crossing faces and street life, the seated watch passers by.
in their own thoughts they live, for that day, for that moment, for the hope of a better tomorrow.
seated across the small streets of the souq, each bringing a story within their frame, yet unified by that one desire to speak words told to understand their living moment, being a welcome, or just a stare, seated they gaze away the lines of each glare.

“the sides of images, what is seen, what is looked at, and what is simply just looked through.
it is either we see to understand, or we look through to bypass what is being truly seen no matter what is being faced in any frame”.
a privilege to have had my photography work featured to cover a report of great essence and value by the prestigious London School of Economics – Middle East Centre – LSE, & at the same time, the superb chance to collaborate over the short film with the internationally renowned composer & musician ghiya rushidat through her music from the track taym.
the report is part of the project ‘The Regulation of Palestinian Everyday Life’, a collaboration between LSE and Birzeit University. It seeks to inquire into the changing modes of governance impacting upon Palestinians in the West Bank including East Jerusalem, their reaction and engagement with these systems, and the social effects of these engagements.

the simple sway of a soul. the closeness in the realisation of one’s self to near a so called completeness in the motion & moment in time.
it is no abstract of realism, & no definition can ever be in similarity to another. maybe in concept of a theoretical thought or label, but no more than that it can ever be a comparison to any other.
in the simple motions eclipsed in light, in the simple lines structuring the life intimate in its one soul to the desire to form, intimacy sways in infinite musical notions forming an eternal figure of 8. If eyes see it or not, it doesn’t ever and will never even change the true meanings exhaled from that life that only breathes desire to live.

visual arts short dance photography series: intimacy the simple sway of a soul. the closeness in the realisation of one’s self to near a so called completeness in the motion & moment in time.
in figures of 8, in figures of 1 they entwine together at the rhythms of classical notes rising with the intensity of their souls.
in motion timed by their sights & closed eyes that grasped & gasped breaths with the touches of their souls as they danced through their story of history that is told. 8 is the shape that eternally embodies their steps of infinite expressions, & counted from their childhood that strengthened their power to become a 1 body expressing what ever is felt in their dance of life.
the lovers reach of expression, the lovers latch to what is and can ever they hold. one to each other they are what they can be, lovers of 1 soul that will never let time end to their beyond infinite love story that is told.
a story told by endless writers, each telling the tale of two bound by heartbreak in their lives from the need to be with each other.
and as they dance through their story, the intensity crafted by Boris Eifman explodes with impact setting aside all secondary storylines in Leo Tolstoy’s novel through his choreographed focus only on the love triangle between “Anna, Karenin, and Vronsky”. as eyes watched, they can only relate to their own life story that they’ve never even told. It is the dramatic expression from the strength of a woman being “reborn”, it is the lovers passion and basic instinct which has led anna’s might to the breach of the then was the current norm.
ironic isn’t it? as that has never and won’t ever change in this so called common life we live through.
yet through his choreography, the expressions of anna karenina brought out what was within, the motherly love that was killed, and the destruction of her inner world. all in all, and being so completely consumed and crushed by passion, she was ready for any sacrifice. each choreographed step spoke not of previous times but of today, and the timeless emotional notions from the #dancers on stage that parallel reality leaving all in their open wide eyes, leaving me only to expose a lovers reach in my own lens of a life.
a figure of 8, and an eternal reach of lovers that will never vanish or fade.
a beyond eternal desire to live a love from breaths that never will fade away.

15 years on, and till date the voices and artistic talent of Boyce Avenue lives on to bring a stronger realisation defining their talent that brings heartfelt echoes across concert halls.
if only words can bring enough moments back from the first experiences through their tunes brought in through their cover musical compositions on the digital air streams of youtube. road-trips and dances, smiles, and in-ear audio which have inspired me to bring feelings through my lens.
they live on to define further journeys of acoustically voiced compositions, and what a privilege to have had the opportunity to capture those definitions unexpectedly in a city of culture, (doha, qatar), where the three brothers mesmerised an ageless audience to what their covers and compositions have done through all those years.

from absolute eager silence, to a full beat that shook the young crowds with a cheered roar as he went on stage to beautifully hold their young souls with lyrical rhythms and beats.
tears, laughter, and endless moments capturing the emotions of each and every person in the crowd, the young performer Bazzi presented a new level of cosmic dreams through his lyrics, and waves upon waves of echoing vocals that sang along the fantasy of his painted beautiful musical dreams.

a photography series exploring our nature, presence, existence, and unspoken moments.
Of all ages, workers running through the streets and markets come together under one roof in their stride for a better life. The active Doha city centre location of Souq Waqif expressed all natures of human behaviours by so many nationalities, and all expressions that overwhelms a looker in how one can expose their inner moments, and the ones that are hidden away from those passing-by-eyes walking through it.
Twenty-six, of over the tens of thousands in workers that are in and out over the years in the Souq, twenty-six sat with and talked with over their natural state in a random moment in time. We cannot by no means know their true-life circumstances or even living situations, yet each one expressed in their own way their feel, not because of a lens in front of them, but because of who they are to themselves.
The survival with expressions as humans lies within the instinct to show & not show through eyes, smiles, tears, and vocal behaviours. And then comes the forced instincts, where all the priors mentioned alternate all together to simply survive. Faked or not, lied with or not, they are still our ways in which we adhere and evolve through our environments we live through. How ironic it is when we simply crave as humans to live.
“I am not here to enjoy what I do, I love what I in nature do, but I don’t enjoy what I see”, hearing those words, from a random twenty-six, in different forms articulated with different expressions only is part of what their story is. All having to hide away their talk so as not to bring attention, and not to cause an expression that would be heard even when quietened down.
Instinctive by nature, our presence, existence, and our unspoken moments are the relics of what we face. How limiting is it to become human by nature when our natural environment forces us unwillingly to change.

As we rise with Qatar, we see it’s beauty, it’s land and sea.
We are one with nature and we MUST remember to keep it clean.
What we add to this beauty should NOT be trash.
What we naturally love, we should not harm.
We hold proudly the beauty of our surroundings.
May Human Nature lead the way. May our pride opens our mind and eyes.
Our Qatar, our nature is more than Sand and Sea
Don’t Litter Qatar. Keep it Clean
Campaign
Doha Environmental Actions Project (DEAP), in collaboration with Nabil Darwish, is proud to launch its anti-littering media campaign to accompany its promotion of caring for the environment here in Qatar.
The campaign was envisioned from wanting to share the love of Qatar’s natural beauty (unexplored by most) with the aim of encouraging citizens and residents to be their better selves and dispose of their trash responsibly.
After 7 months of weekly beach clean-up restoration and to mark an end to 2017, Doha Environmental Actions Project (DEAP) is keen to raise the public awareness of the environmental damage caused by the littering and aid in making the public aware of the new Law #18 of 2017 on public hygiene. In support of this cause, Nabil Darwish donated his time and expertise and took on the campaign elements of Creative Direction, Photography, Videography, and Production.
