Boy Howdy Would You Look At That Blog Revival

It was inevitable, really, that I’d return but honestly I’m whole-heartedly blaming Holmes/Varon(AKA @kinglyforestfairy/@agesofarda) for the insane amounts of effort I’ve just put into creating a shiny new blog for Melkor- along with an equally shiny new blog for everyone’s favourite balrog, Kosomot/Gothmog. Kos is the mainblog of this new account, and I’ll be going through and re-following people tomorrow. As of now, no other Tolkien muses will be returning, but, well. Anyone who’s been here long enough or known me long enough knows how well that tends to go. I’m currently also running several other separate accounts(these being @technicallyaferret, @snivxllus, and @obscurialisms) in the HP fandom.

All follows will come from @kosomot, while Mel will be retaining his URL and this blog will be archived. You can now find him at @neutraldarklord.

Both blogs are ready to roll, though I’ve got a lot of headcanon work and organization to add over the next few days, so bear with me!

Ungoliant's Origin

Ah, we’ve stumbled into another one of those things that Tolkien fans debate endlessly: what is Ungoliant, and where did she come from? In The Silmarillion, Tolkien keeps it pretty vague:

The Eldar knew not whence she came; but some have said that in ages long before she descended from the darkness that lies about Arda, when Melkor first looked down in envy upon the Kingdom of Manwe, and that in the beginning she was one of those that he corrupted to his service.

There are plenty of readers who say that Ungoliant is simply one of the Maiar that joined Morgoth, but that she had more of an independent streak than the others. However, the fact that she isn’t explicitly identified as one of the Maiar (since all the others appear in the Valaquenta) have caused others to doubt this. The plot thickens when you look at the Book of Lost Tales (the earliest draft of the stories found in The Silmarillion), where the original version of Ungoliant (here called Moru) is described:

Here dwelt the primeval spirit Móru whom even the Valar know not whence or when she came, and the folk of Earth have given her many names. Mayhap she was bred of mists and darkness on the confines of the Shadowy Seas, in that utter dark that came between the overthrow of the Lamps and the kindling of the Trees, but more like she has always been; and she it is who loveth still to dwell in that black place taking the guise of an unlovely spider, spinning a clinging gossamer of gloom that catches in its mesh stars and moons and all bright things that sail the airs.

So was Ungoliant a mysterious and independent Maia? Or was she something else? Some readers theorize that she is the dark version of Tom Bombadil, a mysterious spirit that outdates everything (and everyone) around them. Ultimately, it’s up to you - Tolkien’s ambiguity creates yet another opportunity for each of us to personalize their Middle Earth experience.
