dog farted i fear i may die
the thing that jon bois really gets about sports is. ok. all of life is creating meaning out of things that have no meaning. devon cooley voice nothing matters we're all gonna die. but of course all sorts of things have meaning, because we ascribe it. justice and love and collectible toy dolls and art and different coloured rectangles of fabric. and the thing about sports is it's the ultimate form of that. it says ok -- there's two guys hitting a ball to each other and they really badly want the other guy to miss. there's 11 women trying to kick a ball around with their feet to put it in a big net box. there's two people facing each other, one with a bat, the other with a ball. one must prevail. and it matters, because we make it matter. teams are arbitrary and the people on the teams are arbitrary and none of it means anything and you can't even control it! you can control only yourself, and a good portion of the time you're not even in the game, right, you're on the sidelines. and you throw your lot in anyway and say make this hurt. make this hurt and make me care so it can mean something, so i can flip it over and make joy. and it works! and that's why sports are everything
sufferingggg

they are trying to cancel hank green for saying what ALL hockey fans have been thinking
obviously this is all in good fun and there are tons of differences between these sports aside from the size of the playing area, goal, and ball/puck — however.
in football / soccer, the area between the goal posts and crossbar is 0.25% the area of the soccer pitch.
in ice hockey, the area between the posts and crossbar is only 0.14% the area of the ice rink.
so, for ice hockey, the goal is actually smaller relative to the size of the play area
"but wait! hockey pucks and footballs aren't the same size!"
if you took a slice of a FIFA regulation football, the area is 0.22% of the goal area
if you did the same to an NHL puck, the area is between 0.09% and 0.20% of the goal area, depending on the angle of the puck
so assuming that it's easier to get a smaller object in the goal than a bigger object, hockey is the "easier" sport to score in this time.
"but what about the goalie??? they're the same size!"
true! in football, a MUCH larger portion of the net is left uncovered than in ice hockey. so that does seem a bit easier.
anyway, I'd love to see a hockey game played on a rink the size of a football pitch, or a football match played on an ice rink with puck-sized balls. i'm sure we could invent some really fun and fucked up sports if we tried hard enough.
a very merry “nhl players making their debuts have to wear neck guards” szn to all who celebrate

i think abt the "miro heiskanen so calm it concerns his parents" fact a lot and i giggle and i go haha silly exaggeration haha and then i remember his face while he's facing the biggest humiliation ever (falling in front of everyone as a 19 year old at the fastest skater comp so literally everybody is only watching him)
not even blinking. wincing. grimacing. just. :\ the whole time. like okay maybe we do need to worry
which sport has the best ball/object?*

*I am NOT asking which sport you like the most. I want to know which ball (or object used instead of a ball) is your favorite
many such cases

i think one of my favourite things about watching sports (beyond the sport itself) is the magical thinking, the way every spectator feels responsible for the success of the team. the people who are physically there need to sing and scream as loud as possible but then everyone at home has their little rituals. who's to say if the goal we scored was because the players know how to play or because i refused to go to the bathroom, this friend of a friend in rio sat down to watch the game for the first time in his life, these dudes in lanús lit a candle, my cat walked into the room, this woman in caballito did an intention ritual to cure the evil eye, my coworkers in núñez switched seats, a friend froze their goalie. i mean clearly the first option but i think it's (1) hilarious that this kind of magical thinking seems to be largely unavoidable (2) a lot of fun. we're all doing our part ❤️
