CAPE TOWN: FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Leaving my beloved Switzerland was hard, but of course I was excited. Excited for summer, excited to meet new people and explore new places and excited to learn english. I left Zurich on first of January, a new journey punctually for a new year. I’ve been here for a few weeks already and can say I finally feel like home here. It takes time adapting to a new city. Specially Cape Town, since it’s so diverse and nothing like Europe.

I choose Cape Town because of it’s diversity. There are mountains to hike up to, beaches for tanning and there’s lots of culture going on here as well. It has so much to offer I thought, and I was right. Because after my third week, I’m still not bored. The good thing about a language stay like I’m doing with Boa Lingua is that you usually have lots of weeks in the place you choose. (Depends on the English Course you take). I’m here for 10 weeks and it’s amazing knowing you don’t have to stress out and see all the amazing spots in one week. You have time, you can literally go with the flow, be spontanious and mostly do things you like, more than once.

My first weeks consisted of hiking up Lions Head, visiting several Beaches, and just getting used to Cape Town. This all with my new friends that I’ve met here in the EC Language class.  Since I haven’t been in school for two years, having lessons again is so much fun, also the whole bonding moments we have as a class is something I’ve missed. It’s so nice, being a big group of fun people having a good time.

There are many things to keep in mind while you’re staying here. It’s ranked one of the most dangerous cities, but if you adapt, and take care you’ll be fine. So far nothing bad happend to me (expect food poisoning last night). The people are very friendly and lively here. You can see people dancing and playing music everywhere, it truly makes you feel like wanting to stay here forever. Unfortunately my forever takes me only 7 weeks further..but I can’t wait to tell you about my adventures!

A LOVE LETTER TO THE HELMHAUS

Winter is over soon. For us, the people in Zurich, this means to be patient a last couple of weeks until we can sit close to the lakes and rivers of our beautiful city. But at one point, you have binged every series on Netflix and you need to find a new occupation. For that, I recommend the Helmhaus. The Helmhaus is one of my favourite museums in Zurich. The fact that is basically for free, is a huge bonus. I like to spend my money on museums and their entries but sometimes I walk into an exhibition and want to turn around straight ahead. But I payed for it, therefore I will look at the art that is being exhibited and try to enjoy myself. But, when a museum is for free you’re not ashamed at all to walk out right a way. There’s no regret on spending those few francs, no thought goes into “what I could have bought with that money instead”. Nevertheless, I never had to walk out the Helmhaus. The exhibitions never failed to amaze and inspire me. No room is like the other, with every exhibition the Helmhaus looks unrecognizable and transforms itself each time. If you have a friend that is not really an art enthusiast like you are, take them with you anyway. Because the museum is rather small divided in two floors. If you can’t be fascinated with the art that is being exhibited you can sit close to the window  (The window ledge is big enough to sit on, which is very convenient) and enjoy the art outside. The oldtown of Zurich. It’s the perfect place to observe the busy Niederdorf but also admire the oldtown and it’s pretty buildings. With views like this, I get why tourists call Zurich “charming”
