On May 8, 1945, Clarence Alberg, who worked for The Stars and Stripes during the war, wrote a letter home to his family in the United States about what he had seen in Germany. “Well, the news we’ve been waiting to hear for a long time came through yesterday so now part of the war is over and I hope its [sic] not long before the other half ends and we can all get home to stay. Yesterday was one day I don’t think I’ll forget for some time not only because it marked the end of the war here but because of the things I saw … This is certainly one of the prettiest countries I’ve ever seen and I believe there are few places in America or anywhere else that are as nice as some of the spots I’ve seen. Yesterday I also saw the most horrible thing I’ve ever seen. I went through a concentration camp and saw things that I still [sic] hard to believe. This one was at Dachau and something I believe I’ll remember as long as I live.” 2012.190.1.

What are you going to do with your children? What will you give them?
