I got worms!
I've been wanting to try worm composting for a while now and today I finally bought my first clew of worms (yes, I googled that).
I don't know what I expected when I went to buy the worms, but what I found was a cute neighborhood operation manned by a talkative gentleman. I'm really glad I decided to call first (I almost didn't because I don't like talking on the phone) because he needed the heads up to prep the worms and the place is just his house and didn't have an obvious doorbell, or door for that matter, so I probably would have given up and driven the 30 mins back home empty handed.
But I did call ahead and the worms were in the process of being unearthed when I got there. I stood and listened to the man tell me all about the different creepy crawlies I would see, how worms reproduce, how he got into worm farming, what he feeds his worms, and much more. Eventually the worms were sufficiently separated from the loose castings and were ready to be bagged.
As I was leaving he asked me if I wanted to tour his worm bins and I said why not. He showed me his shed full of bins and explained how he built them, why he made certain design decisions, and his current experiments. All the while I felt this sense of quiet pride and contentment from him. This was his domain and he was enjoying sharing it with me.
If you're still here, thanks for sticking with me on this rambling post. Buying worms turned out to be such an unexpected experience that I wanted to share it. I think it is a rare thing to observe people so at ease and in their element as this gentleman and it should be enjoyed. I strive to find this kind of contentment in my life.

CHARKHA!!!!!!!
I used tumblrs shitty gif converter but the point stands!
A theoretically working Charkha made of cardboard, duct tape, and a dowel.
Theoretically because I have to actually ya know, spin some cotton on it, but it’s solar noon and thus, it is nap time
Peas!
Pea plants are amazing. They're a plant that feels to me like they are desperately keen to grow
An escaped seed must have sprouted, having dropped from the sheet holding a bunch of drying pea pods above it.
They're really beautiful plants, with delicate flowers and tendrils that grip and wind onto any support they can find, and they taste bloody great, especially the first pick of sugar snaps right at the start of the season. They are early cropping, and apparently the flowers cannot be fertilised (and therefore won't produce peas) above 30 degrees.
Being legumes, they fix nitrogen and so do not require lots of added inputs to the soil. The soil should be well draining though, to prevent root rot. They can be eaten at any stage - eat the shoots if you're fancy, or dry them and make pease porrige like the did in the middle ages! In fact, when they were introduced in the 1600s in Britain as the fresh vegetable (and not just a dried more like a bean) they were said to cause such a stir that people become manically addicted...
So they can be dried for storage for eating, but also of course for saving the seed. Drying and shelling peas for seed was my introduction into the world of seed saving. A perfect intro - they make it so easy for us! Simply leaving a few of the forgotten pods on the plant as long as possible, to swell up and dry, and you'll have your seed supply for next years sowing.
Dried wrinkly peas from a sugar snap variety. They are said to be properly dry when you could bite into one and not leave tooth marks.
On a larger scale, marking off a section to not harvest from at all works best, although tricky to resist the plumper pods in the forbidden section. If there are any particularly unhealthy plants, they can be removed (a process called rouging) at any point to try and avoid passing on these trait.
Peas are mostly self fertile, having "perfect" flowers (which just mean the flowers contain both the pistil and the stamen, allowing them to fertilize themselves). This means they are unlikely to cross, although the advice if you are growing more than one variety of pea to try and grow them 15 meters apart, but this can be less if they are separated by a barrier such as a hedge. Pollinators can be lazy sometimes! But, again the chance of crossing is low so it shouldn't be a big concern. Side note, thing like chickpeas (Cicer arietinum) and sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus) are in the same family Fabaceae but not the same species so will not cross with the traditional garden peas (Pisum sativum).
Within this species there are 3 main categories -
English/podding peas. These are grown for the pea and the pod is generally too tough and fiberous to be eaten
Magetout/ snow peas. These are eaten before the peas develop and are eaten whole
Sugar snap peas. These peas were developed more recently to be the best of both worlds, the pea is eaten whole with the peas developed inside, meaning the crop is sweeter.
Within these categories, you will sometimes hear peas be refereed to as "wrinkled" or "round" seeded. This refers to how the seed looks dry, as sugar snap peas have more wrinkled seed. This is something to do with the higher sucrose content, but what it exactly does I couldn't pretend to know. There is also massive height range with different varieties of peas, and the dwarf varieties are well worth considering if you don't want to worry so much about the sturdiness of your support, or having to find something to climb on when it comes to harvesting the peas higher up.
Peas and calendula
Sitting around shelling peas can be really social and also feels satisfyingly like a kind of ancient practice, I don't know what it is about podding and shelling vegetables that appeals so much but I highly recommend it as a meditative process!
For more info, Hodmedods UK sell all sorts of dried legumes on their site, but also write articles and blogs about traditional varieties of UK grown legumes like the Carlin pea and how to cook with them.
I pieced this quilt. The pattern is called Batty by Apples and Beavers. My friend Becky did the custom quilting. While the quilting was NOT cheap, it is incredible! It really brings the quilt to life! I could not be more thrilled! I’d love to know what you all think of it. The photos are Becky’s as I don’t have it back home yet. SPOOKTACULAR!!!
OMG this is so good.
Look at what the garden gave me today!
These are nasturtium seeds! I could tell they were ready because they fell off into my hand just by tapping on the plant. In some areas nasturtium will self seed, but my yard tends to be a little too cold and damp for the seeds to survive the winter. I'll leave some out there in case they decide to multiply without my help, but I like to collect a dozen or so each year. I'll dry these out for a couple weeks on a paper towel then store them in a glass jar until spring 🌼🌱
I've recently started going to occupational therapy for my thumbs because I have a stress injury from knitting (which is definitely funny to say as a 30 year old 😂). It's been helping a lot which is awesome, but it's also got me thinking about how important my hands are and how devastated I would be if I lost use of them. My job and literally all of my hobbies involve a lot of fine motor control. I'm really thankful that I can get the help I need right now and I'm really hoping that my hands don't get any worse

50/50 wool silk in this lovely green that dips into blue tones!
I love how this came out and I think my consistency is pretty good too esp for silk blends lol (ignore the little loopsy they are… on purpose for the most part) but!!! I cannot decide on what to ply it with
if anyone’s got any opinions 🥺🥺🥰
ply with:
blue purple silk blend
royal purple 100% silk commercial single
brown
1. problem with this option is that I’d have to spin an equivalent amount to match this and also it’s a completely solid color and I really love the color change in the green and would ideally want to find something that does something similar
2. This one is a commercial single of 100% silk that I dyed myself and there is a subtle color ombré happening in it which is the ideal, but I can’t guarantee that I’ll have enough to ply all together
3. I don’t know if I have brown silk but I have a lot of natural color wools and some natural silks too so I could probably come up with something close to matching? I just don’t really know…

They really hate being called 'weird,' huh?
I mean like... I've been called 'weird' my whole life and pretty much immediately started owning it. But I'm also much more the 'makes art from discarded items' weird and less the 'show us your genitals' weird.
They use it like a slur lol
Years ago I casually mentioned that I'm weird to my pro-trump dad and his wife and they got bafflingly offended and insisted that I'm NOT weird.
Being abnormal is the worst thing to those people because they've always wanted it to have a death sentence.
It's kind of funny to see them use it like that because I've been 'weird as a point of pride' for like 30 years. Essentially 'you can't call us that, that's our word for making fun of you!'
Elon actually called it a 'slur' and is trying to prevent people on Twitter from using it. Like... yall want to be oppressed so bad.
I love how benign it is. You can call someone a fascist for years and they don't even blink, bur call them 'weird....' love it.
fascists goal is to become mainstream and normal. In his book The Authoritarians, Bob Altemeyer found that people who scored high on an authoritarian scale would say that they would want to be around the middle of the scale, while medium and low authoritarians would say that they would like to be low on the scale. Altemeyer notes that when asked, high authoritarians tend to rank "being normal" as one of the best things a person can be. This is why when you call them a fascist, they can brush it off like it's nothing, but when you call them weird it hurts so bad. The thing they want the most is to be normal. They want their bigotry, their hatred, their violence to be normal. And it is vital that we do not allow that. They are not normal, they will never be normal and we will make sure that they are not normal. Always push back on their ideas, call them on how weird they are, and organize against them to make sure they stay weird.
