| My grandfather always said, “Meet your maker, before you meet your undertaker.” Losing my Godmother, this year, was a rough pill to swallow. She was one of the most talented singers I ever heard. She was always upbeat and loving life. She was honest with me, even when I was too young to understand simple concepts. She never bought me my own candy apple, but I forgave her for that (I’m not still hurt that I had to always share with @t_rain lol). She was simply an amazing woman who loved God and her family. I wasn’t her blood relative, but she never treated me as anything less than. I took up singing and fell in love with music because she was in the industry. A true testament to where music can take you in life. It is a tough process to unpack the sadness this loss has caused and I have yet to crack the surface of my pain. On this day, and forevermore, I’m eternally grateful to have met and experienced your excellence. I love you and miss you dearly. | 🚨 LONG POST ALERT 🚨 As a young child/teenager I didn’t believe I’d ever speak in front of a room full of people. I believed my depression was singular and nobody would care or empathize with my situation. Yesterday I was given the opportunity to sit on a panel of Law Enforcement Officers to answer questions from a group of teenagers. I was also given some time to tell them a portion of my story and offer some advice which I believe is pivotal for them to hear. I stressed to them how important it is to focus on their individual progress in life instead of trying to impress their “friends” from school. Having the kids come up to me after the event and ask for individual advice, wanting to take pictures, talk about life, and just converse in a safe environment was a true blessing. I loved seeing their enthusiasm and I look forward to doing it again soon. | As Police Week comes to a close I’m reminded of the old adage that reads, “Every day, in every city and town across the country, police officers are performing vital services that help make their communities safer.” Although there are incidents which call that quote’s validity into question, I am proud to say I am a police officer in a great municipality. | I have two perfect examples left in my life of what a mother is. My mother and aunt are the true essence of motherhood in my eyes. | I’ve learned the key to thwarting my depression is to always smile. Work, life, relationships, finances, family, and many more things have always had a stranglehold on my mind. I decided approximately 6-7 years ago I would not allow others to interact with me without smiling at least once. I can be the butt of the joke as long as others smile. I’m imperfect in all aspects of my being, however, I refuse to take my last breath without providing as many smiles as possible. Please smile at people.
