no but the best part is how he got the name:
his name was originally “potatoes,” and his owner, willoughby bertie, told the stable lad who helped him to write the horse’s name on a feed bin. the boy misheard it as, literally “pot-eight-o’s” and wrote it with 8 o’s. bertie found it so funny that he kept that as the horses name.
Pot-8-Os
I have just eaten durian. If you haven't heard of durian, Google it now, its very interesting. In short, durian is a southeast Asian fruit famous for being extremely smelly. It is banned in public places like buses and hospitals. And yet despite its odor there are people who adore it. I have wanted to try durian ever since I first heard of it. I found some frozen, both whole and packaged, in the local Asian market yesterday and bought a package.
I pulled a chunk out of the package to thaw in a plastic ziptop baggie a couple of hours ago. The smell wasn't what I expected; people tend to describe it as rotten but I found it more bitter and acrid, like something burnt.
When it was thawed I took it outside (the smell was starting to escape the baggie and I don't want to offend my brother) along with a cup of pineapple chunks just in case. The smell was better once outside, and I took some time to appreciate it. It was still unpleasant, but more like a strong onion or garlic, and that's not so bad. I started eating it. At first I was reminded of the flavor of a sharp red onion, but that mellowed out to something I really can't accurately describe. It wasn't particularly bad, but it wasn't particularly good either I thought. The texture, you may have heard, is like custard, and that was cool. In the end pairing it with the pineapple did help, but after it was all said and done, durian isn't something I'd write home about. However I still have quite a bit in the freezer so I suppose I'll be trying it again, Maybe I should ferret out some recipes.

I freaking love Slither.
These are calf testicle/bacon kabobs. Bacon Ball Kabobs.
Since my gastric bypass last year I have been on the look-out for new (for me) and interesting sources of protein, which is the most important part of my diet now. So far I have tried rabbit (good, and Kiwi adored it) and goat (which my new stomach didn't like). My local Asian market always carries calf testicles so I decided to give them a go. Since I don't tolerate breaded and fried foods well I decided to grill them on my Traeger.
Testicles are encased in a tough membrane which has to be removed, then I cut them into large chunks and marinated them. I threaded them on skewers with pieces of my homemade bacon and grilled them...I forget how long exactly, maybe about 10 minutes per side.
The verdict...They had very little flavor of their own, all I tasted really was the marinade. Texture-wise they reminded me of a fine-grained liver (and I like liver). Unfortunately my pouch (as in my new stomach) gave it a thumbs-down and ejected it. :/ Damn pouch.
Perhaps these are better fried after all, so if you haven't had stomach surgery and are curious maybe you should try them that way instead.
