shirley jackson’s self portrait, 1942
The Book is destined to become debris, an erratic ruin; it's like a sugar cube dissolving in water: some bits sink, others remain upright, erect, crystalline, pure, and brilliant.
Roland Barthes, The Preparation of the Novel: Lecture Courses and Seminars at the Collège de France (1978-1979 and 1979-1980) (trans. Kate Briggs)
A sort of drive compels us to take the Book apart, to make it into a piece of lace. Absurd traces of this drive can be seen every day: (a) July 8, 1979, on the number 21 bus, crowded, Sunday evening, around 9 pm, next to me, an imperturbable man of around forty, armed with a ruler and a black Biro, underlining almost every single sentence in a book (I didn't get to see which one). (b) Chateaubriand's portrait of Joubert: "As he read, he would tear out the pages of the books he disliked, thereby creating a personal library composed of works with the cores removed, contained within oversized covers."
