i am so serious when i say dark and quiet are both human rights.

i don't mean like absolute silence. obviously in an ideal community, there would still be sound and noise from people and music and work etc. but it haunts me that when i camp in the forest i can hear the howl of semi trucks on the interstate miles away. and the people who live beside it never know quiet. it haunts me that many people will live their whole lives never seeing the stars in the sky that were fully visible with NO electric light pollution as recently as my great-grandparents' childhoods.

so much of our lives is bright bright unnecessary noise. neon mcdonalds signs 200 feet in the air so we can see it from the road. led lights over billboards. parking lots lit up like sports stadiums at closed office buildings. advertisements playing at gasoline pumps. streets lined with led porch lights and decorative garden lights that genuinely threaten entire species of wildlife. music blaring outside pharmacies to deter homeless people. everything always shining and wailing for no purpose but profit and cruelty.

obviously not everything can be turned off or made quiet and i wouldn't want it to be anyway and there is a lot of nuance and room for "but what about" here, but MANY things HAVE to change because none of us are supposed to live like this and we shouldn't have to!!!

Lana Turner at age eighteen with her Pekingese pup "Poochie", photos by Peter Stackpole, 1939. These portraits were taken for LIFE magazine (one of the pics of Lana and "Poochie" made the cover) for an issue published in January 1940. The series was snapped at the Sunset Plaza Apartments, designed by legendary Black architect Paul R. Williams in collaboration with L.G. Scherer and built in 1936. Designed in a modernized California version of the Georgian Revival style with sweeping outdoor staircases and a large courtyard and distinctive swimming pool, the eighteen unit building off Sunset Blvd. on Sunset Plaza Drive in West Hollywood was a celebrity favorite and residents at various times included Katherine Hepburn, Dorothy Lamour, Richard Arlen, Carole Landis, James Dean, Tarzan author Edgar Rice Burroughs, musicians Alfred Newman, Kay Kyser and Tommy Dorsey, and in later years singer and actress Bernadette Peters. Though the complex was declared a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument in 1980, developers decided to tear it down in 1987, replacing the beautiful Sunset Plaza Apartments with a gated Mediterranean style mansion built for an elderly Mexican millionaire, who died two years later.

Joan Crawford in the MGM/Clarence Brown pre-code drama Letty Lynton, 1932. The movie became embroiled in a copyright dispute in 1936 connected to the play it was based upon and Letty Lynton was pulled from public view, with only hard to find, poor quality bootleg copies available. With the copyright issue expired, the Warner Archive conducted a 4K restoration of the movie and released it on Blu-ray in June of 2026 following a screening at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood the month before. Miss Crawford's costumes in the film were designed by MGM's Chief Designer Gilbert Adrian, and the glamorous white cotton organdy gown seen above, known as "the Letty Lynton dress", sold over 50,000 copies in 1932 when Macy's department store made a knock-off of the design after the admiration the gown received when Joan appeared in the film wearing it.
