Today I spent a lot of time on NMR spectroscopy. I really struggled to understand it in class, but after 1,5 hours of watching youtube videos and practicing it myself I finally understand it. Yay!
I also had a class today on physical chemistry, and I dont like that class at al. It’s too much physics for me haha.

When was the last time you started to learn something completly random that you always tought it was cool?
Today I started to study how to write a script just out of nowhere. Just sat on my computer without any intention, typed something on Google and here, two hours later I have pages of notes and an idea to work on.
The idea probably won’t go very far, but I had fun at least for tonight. Let’s see.

today was admittedly not the most productive day I’ve had, but I did follow along a non-mandatory immunology lecture and the physical chemistry practice group session 😋 (plus now my kitchen is reorganised and beautiful)

I think it’s funny how all of my work consists on reading PDFs and wrting Word documents and yet I still feel the need to have a paper draft to deduce some equations and write down notes. I guess this is part of being a 90s kid.
Also I enjoyed some some of the sun in my bedroom today.

In another context I would love home office so much. In this one, I’m trying to get confort in the perks of it, like drinking warm tea you just made in your own kitchen.
Okay... so, I moved out of my parent’s house to a new city, so much bigger than my own, to start my professional life... and then a pandemic started to happen and got back to my house three weeks later.
That was 47 days ago and I left the house once since I got here. I am so happy I made it back home to be with my parents in this stressful time, that I am still doing home office for the length of my intership contract and everyone in my family is safe and healthy at this moment.
But this week is off. I was pulling off writing this, but if I don’t write how I’m feeling, who will? I am trying to do my work and focus in good things, but everything is so frustrating. I’m learning a lot with work, but I am missing so much being so far away, but this was a choice that had to be made. But I’m almost fifty days at home and I know it’s only the beggining since not much people seem to be doing social distancing.
The numbers relating to COVID-19 go up and my mood goes down. I guess that is happening with everybody, I just had to get it out of me in some way. Maybe in the next few weeks I will get better at expressing what I’m feeling, maybe I won’t even try it. Let’s see...
Hope everyone is safe, hope everyone can stay at home.

This is a picture tracking bullet holes on Allied planes that encountered Nazi anti-aircraft fire in WW2.
At first, the military wanted to reinforce those areas, because obviously that’s where the ground crews observed the most damage on returning planes. Until Hungarian-born Jewish mathematician Abraham Wald pointed out that this was the damage on the planes that made it home, and the Allies should armor the areas where there are no dots at all, because those are the places where the planes won’t survive when hit. This phenomenon is called survivorship bias, a logic error where you focus on things that survived when you should really be looking at things that didn’t.
We have higher rates of mental illness now? Maybe that’s because we’ve stopped killing people for being “possessed” or “witches.” Higher rate of allergies? Anaphylaxis kills, and does so really fast if you don’t know what’s happening. Higher claims of rape? Maybe victims are less afraid of coming forward. These problems were all happening before, but now we’ve reinforced the medical and social structures needed to help these people survive. And we still have a long way to go.
This is one of my favorite anecdotes to show how clever rewording of statistics can make them say the opposite of what they mean:
Every time a state makes riding a motorcycle without a helmet illegal, the number of ER patients seriously injured in motorcycle accidents skyrockets. Every single time.
When you phrase it just right, it makes it sound like it’s more dangerous to ride a motorcycle with a helmet than without one. Of course, the reality is that before those laws, those patients were going to the morgue, not the ER.
That also reminds me of a story from world war 1 where the soldiers started to take their helmets off because more soldiers would come back injured while wearing a helmet. That’s because if they didn’t have a helmet they died.
2.25.20 ♡ 90/100 days of productivity I’ve been posting pretty consistently on here so far which I’m glad about! Right now, I need to start studying for a biochem exam and I have about less than a day to do so and I’m pretty much screwed lol rip. Today was also tiring from having to go to class then work then a club event then studying with friends. My desk makes me happy though whenever I look at it because it’s so colorful and cute (´∀｀)♡
