Potential Sonic Drift 3 vehicle names.

As you may or may not know, aside from Fang's Marvelous Queen, the vehicles original to the drift games are all based on wind-themed meteorological terms.

Sonic has the Cyclone, he also owns the Tornado, a biplane that Tails often drives. A Cyclone is one of the biggest wind phenomenons

Tails has the MTP-01 Whirlwind and the MTP-02 Whirlwind S7, he would be the only one to carry the wind-theme name to the modern era with the Whirlwind Sport in Team Sonic Racing. Very fitting Tails gets the Whirlwind as its similar to a Tornado in scale.

Amy has Breeze, fitting for her gentle personality. Breeze would later be seen again in the IDW Comics and is the only other vehicle aside from the Majestic Queen and Cyclone to make a reappearance in recent years surprisingly!

Knuckles has Tempest, an old fashioned term for a nasty storm.

Eggman has the Egg Typhoon, Typhoon, being another name for a Cyclone and a Hurricane. Fitting for the two icons of Sonic sharing that importance!

Metal Sonic has the Blue Devil, I was confused about this growing up since it's not really a term you'd hear where I grew up but apparently in the US, terms like Dust Devils, Snow Devils, Water Devils, etc. are a thing, it's a small whirlwind containing objects and even Fire Devils and Trash Devils have been cropping up in recent years. A Blue Devil is not a real thing afaik, but if its a devil containing Metal Sonic, that seems a pretty apt name.

Fang's Marvelous Queen is the only vehicle I think that isn't connected to a meteorological phenomenon. Even though it was named in the Drift Games instead of Triple Trouble. I did some digging and there was a Japanese racehorse named "Marvelous Queen" who was born in 1991 (the same year Sonic came out) and was active from 1993-1996. She wasn't a particularly notable winner though so I think that was just coincidence. Should be noted though that other racehorses later on have been named marvelous queen like in 2016 and in 2020. Maybe its a nice horse name? Would lineup for Fang if he were into racehorse gambling. (And his whole gambling stage in fighters and cowboy design)

Now, in a potential Sonic Drift 3 sequel, how would I personally name the other characters vehicles?

Mighty - Monsoon

Ray - Flurry, a light gust of wind

Bean - Squall, a sudden violent wind, yknow like a bomb

Bark - Blizzard, of course.

Vector - Gale, a strong current of air.

Espio - Arashi, japanese for storm, could've went with Kaze but that's just wind.

Charmy - Puff, a small force of wind

got commissioned to finish one of the other ideas I had for the issue 4 B cover

take it as a celebratory “good job great miniseries” poster, and go read this miniseries if you haven’t yet!

I've seen a lot of people talk about Scrapnik Island but I haven't seen anyone properly call out this part. Right after their mind transfer failed Sonic mentions feeling someone else's emotions... their anger... their sadness... and immediately after Mecha Sonic attacks a scrapnik, slamming its body against a wall and immediately after Sonic is furious.

And I get it, Sonic stands for his friends, that's a core personality trait of his and after finding out the scrapniks have turned over a new leaf, he's more amenable to their existence. But see, imo, I don't think this reaction is Sonic's, in fact, since it's coming right off of Sonic feeling Mecha's emotions, I'd argue that /this/ is Mecha Sonic's true instinct coming to the surface. Having seen his friends get hurt, that anger is passed on to Sonic and is what starts Sonic to fight against Mecha Sonic's rampage.

It's the truth of Mecha Sonic's feelings in contrast to these panels from a few pages ago, even when under the influence of Eggman's core programming, he hesitated. I don't know if it was purely programming or he was trying to delude himself for the sake of his goals but he made a conscious effort to lie. Fact of the matter is,,, even with the programming, he still saw them as his friends.

regarding your last post, who do you think is more likely to get merch next?

Made a handy lil chart! Everyone in the first row has received a 4" and 2.5" figure from Jakks Pacific, the company who currently holds the master license. Yes, Fang was recently announced to be receiving a 4" figure!

Wave 18 recently showed off the new Amy 4" figure and Wave 19 is all classic era figurines so the last hidden figure is most likely Trip to coincide with 2.5's Wave 19 (all classics) and Wave 20 (the wave Trip will be in). Besides, look at that lineup, who else could it be? Tails? Fuck off, we haven't seen him since the heroes 3-pack earlier this year, atp he's bound to be stuck there forever /j (Yes, Tails has not had a solo-release, even after 8 months)

Anywho, continuing on, Heavy Gunner and King only received 4" figurines, and I really don't see them releasing for 2.5"... (well. I said the same for Eggrobo but. lo and behold.)

Now the Good Stuff.

Tier 4

Filled with characters who appeared in Sonic Mania, these are the characters that imo are the most likely to receive a figurine next. We've already seen Heavy King and Heavy Gunner so for Heavy Rider, Heavy Ninja and Heavy Mystic, it's more of a "It's bound to happen later on."

For Bean and Bark, it's a little... less secure. Imo, Fang getting a figurine is more emblematic of his status as an antagonist in Sonic Superstars, Trip getting her figurine so close to Fang supports that. So it's not necessarily a guarantee that just cause Fang got his figurine, that Bean and Bark will too. There's also the fact that, for Fang and Trip, they got figurines cause they had 3D models to base off of from Superstars. For the other Heavies, they can use a modified sculpt of Heavy Gunner. But they would have to make whole new sculpts and molds for Bean and Bark.

For Silver Sonic, he's a wild card. Jakks Pacific tends to throw in a few curve balls here and there as to who gets a figurine (cough cough, badniks and animal friends) and Mecha Sonic is/was a character they were... really pushing. fsr. Silver Sonic gets that random card so I can't write him off.

Tier 5

Characters who appeared in Sonic Superstars. Normally they would be the higher tier since they're the more recent game, but out of all of them I think only one has a good chance of making a figurine debut any time soon.

Metal Knuckles recently got a Funko Pop!, he's from the original Sonic R line and he's a really cool design. Don't be surprised if we see him in the next few waves. Tails Doll on the other hand, got demoted to a cameo appearance in Superstars. We also have to talk about his design (noodle limbs and antenna) that make him more susceptible to breaking as a toy compared to the metals more chunkier builds. That's the sole reason why I think he has a less chance of making it as a figurine.

Metal Tails and Metal Amy are in that weird limbo of being metal versions of established characters, and their designs are really well thought out, but they neither have the legacy (like metal knuckles and tails doll) nor the gravitas to become figurines. Don't get me wrong, they're perfect for making toys, it's just that I don't think they would be a high priority for Jakks Pacific. I'm putting them in the "Eventually but maybe in a few years" pile.

Metal Trip has even less going on for her, being a metal version of a recently established character. But I guess she's this tier's wild card, while I'm pretty sure they would go Metal Knuckles first if ever, Metal Trip could be next before Tails and Amy. Then again... she'd have to compete with Trip's masked and umasked designs for a slot.... and Jakks Pacific wouldn't want to oversaturate the waves with three Trip figures right off the bat...

(Also forgot to add them in the picture but Mecha Sonic MK II is in the same boat as Silver sonic and Amy Doll is the least likely one)

Tier 6

First off, let me preface this, since these characters have not appeared in any substantial games in the recent years, their likelihood of getting figurines? It's close to 0. Unless Jakks Pacific establishes an IDW line, (which tbh isn't that outlandish, but defo not anytime soon since we're still right off the heels of the Prime line and are currently going into the Sonic 3 Movie line. That's 4 branches of branding already) and even then they would have to compete with more popular characters from mainline IDW like Sage and Kit, Whisper and Tangle, Clutch, Dr. Starline, Mimic, Rough and Tumble. before we ever get characters from Classic. And that's only considering comic-exclusive characters. Hopefully Jakks and Sega would be smart and /not/ release game characters with the IDW branding but... well you know. Toy branding doesn't work that way.

Jakks Pacific actually released a Metal Virus Sonic figurine but it wasn't part of an IDW established line and part of a general Sega Branding line. (Ai Ai was in wave 1 and the only rep of Super Monkey Ball). Maybe it's Sega doing market research by releasing representative figurines of a bunch of their IPs to see which sells best? To see which IP would benefit from getting a Jakks Pacific line... Go buy Metal Virus Sonic if you want to see more IDW Sonic figurines y'all.

Anyway. Back to my post. Simple enough, if we do go through all that caveats, (IDW Sonic line established, Mainline IDW Sonic figurines already out and Classic Characters are left) then the Witchcarters are most likely options. Carrotia, Hocke-wulf and Bearanger first then Witchcart cause she's honestly the least marketable... (Just like Eggman).

Honey the Cat is a fan favorite but alas... complicated. Ian Flynn has mentioned that using her apart from cameos is difficult since she's an homage to Candy from Fighting Vipers, while I would assume that meant stuff in writing cause that would be using a personality based on a character he has no control over, it would make sense to extend that restriction to merch (imo). Why make a figurine of a character who can't be used to her full extent I guess? Then again... it's just a figurine... and she's appeared in artwork and promotional material before.

The band characters, okay, they're bottom of the barrel stuff, like, "in a decade once they've run out of characters to make" stuff... Sorry guys.

Tier 7

As long as Classic Chaotix is in limbo? None of them are getting any figurines. Like yes we did see Yui Karasuno illustrate a Classic Espio. We've also seen a Classic Vector cameo in Amy 30th

But Sonic's birthday and Espio's Sonic Channel artwork are commemorative pieces. Classic Vector is a "just hidden enough that we can say he's a different character if he's not allowed" kinda deal.

Ian Flynn has #KnowingSmiled Classic Chaotix before and we do have Classic Chaotix's anniversary next year. So fingers crossed!

what are the others' first piece of merchandise then

(Barring Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Eggman and Metal Sonic since that's kinda hard to answer... I'll be focusing on characters less used than them.)

Mighty and Ray's first ever piece of merchandise were the 2'' sphere action figures by Jakks Pacific in the latter half of 2019.

Some more info on these, they could be taken out of the spheres, Mighty came in a black tinted ball (not red!) while Ray came in a yellow tinted ball. (different from Tails!) iirc the models for these figurines were made by Rafa Knight, there was a whole issue regarding that.

Fang, Bean, Bark and Classic Espio's first piece of merch are the famous Segasonic UFO Arcade plushies.

As for Neoclassic era, Bean, Bark and Classic Espio did not get any piece of merch :( Fang on the other hand did! I mentioned he recieved a Jakks Pacific Figurine this August but his very first piece of merch post-Mania was actually a 10'' plush by Great Eastern Entertainment!

As for Sonic R characters, Metal Knuckles, as previously mentioned, got his first ever piece of merch as a Funko Pop!

Tails Doll did not get a single piece of merch sadly. Even back when Sonic R released, (from my knowledge) the game only got a collaborative merch set with Burger King, and even then it only had Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman.

I've already mentioned Trip's upcoming figurine but that seems to be it for Classic Characters.

Hocke-Wulf, Carrotia, Bearanger, Witchcart, Classic Vector, Classic Charmy, Honey the Cat and Tails Doll from the 90s have yet to receive any merch

Bean, Bark and Classic Espio have yet to receive merch in the neoclassic era

Metal Tails, Metal Amy, Metal Trip, Heavy Ninja, Heavy Rider and Heavy Magician (and Amy Doll I guess) have yet to receive any merch too.

Metal Knuckles receiving a Funko Pop and Fang receiving a Jakks Pacific 2.5 Figure (as well as Trip being announced to get one too in the next wave) all in the past year strikes a very interesting development in terms of Sonic Merchandising!

For the longest time the characters available to be used in Classic Sonic merchandising have always been Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Dr. Eggman, Metal Sonic and Super Sonic. It's always been this way since 2009 when First 4 Figures first released a line of figurines done in the Classic Style. (Two years before Sonic Generations by the way!)

And every company afterwards followed the same trend. (... Not always. Amy and Metal Sonic's inclusion is always dependent on if the company has enough ''character slots'' to fit them and Eggman's status as a non-animal villain puts him in a unique position where he's sometimes included sometimes not but yknow potato potato) Regardless, for the longest time no other character was /added/ to that 7 piece lineup.

That is... until the release of Sonic Mania Plus in 2018, bringing back two beloved characters Mighty and Ray into the Classic spotlight. And not as cameo characters either but as main protagonists in their own right.

Now a little background is needed, for the longest time a toy company called Jazwares held the license for making Sonic articluated figurines (there were a few others who had the license too but Jazwares was THE head bitch in the industry), they lost the license in 2013/2014 to Tomy who would go on to make Sonic Boom Figurines and then regular figurines in 2017~. Tomy would lose that license to Jakks Pacific in 2019~.

During Jazwares run, they released their line of Classic figurines but lost the license before they could release Knuckles

(They have an eggman too btw just. not included in this pack)

And during Tomy's run, they released their own Classic line too in 2017 (bundled with a modern version of the characters figurine and a copy of a comic book from Archie Sonic themed around the character...

... well. supposed to be. Archie lost the license to the comics in the middle of the series so Sonic and Knuckles had Archie books while Tails and Metal Sonic were delayed.

The status of their releases (iirc) were actually really... doubtful... Keep in mind this was in the middle of Sega reviewing the Sonic licenses before Forces, after cutting Archie, Tomy was also on the chopping block. Thankfully the two released a year later in 2018, their initial comic books were replaced with english versions of Sonic Comics that were posted for Sonic's 25th anniversary. These were the only way you could get english versions of those comics I think?

Amy and Eggman were originally planned for this series as well, shown off in the 2017 catalogue that initially announced this line but Tomy lost the license soon after Tails and Metal Sonic release. The fact the two even released was kind of a hail mary, I think it was generally agreed back then that they were gonna be shelved and only got to release /because/ of those 25th Anni comics.

Jakks Pacific would get the toy license in 2019 but during their first year... they would only release /Modern/ Sonic figurines. And they didn't release waves of products as fast as they are nowadays. Back then each new announcement was like a dripping faucet. Hell, from what I remember, their very first line of products wasn't even articulated figures but stretchy figures?

We got the pinball figures in 2019 though,

Which at least told us that A) Jakks Pacific had the license for classic sonic products and B) Mighty! and Ray!!!! First ever merchandise!!! The lack of Amy though did set us in that weird limbo were people were wondering if Classic Amy would ever be acknowledged by Sega. Especially post Sonic Mania. Keep in mind 2017 was like that soft reset of the franchise and her not being in Mania at all, not being included in Tomy's classic merchline in 2017-2018, not being included in these pinball figurines, only ever being used in promotional stuff like the shorts and two posts on twitter... (at the time) like. Amy fans were really worried for her!!! It wasn't until Sonic's 30th IDW Comic where we finally get to see her again in any substantial form and that was all the way in 2021!

Anyway, we finally got the articulated figurines announced in 2020 but the first few lines... only had /modern/ sonic stuff.

The first two waves of both the 2.5 inch and 4 inch line only featured modern characters. Thankfully classic series figurines would be announced for both lines around Fall, classic sonic for the 2.5 inch line in December and...

THATS RIGHT BITCHES, MIGHTY FOR THE 4 INCH LINE

Releasing NOVEMBER 2020, our very first Classic Sonic articulated figurine and its MIGHTY. I remember being so hyped for that. It was kinda awkward since these were the first two classic toys and mighty was bigger. Thankfully Sonic would get a 4 inch figure in the wave in February but Mighty would get a 2.5 inch figure the much later in October.

Starting then classic characters would gradually be introduced in the figurine line. For 2.5 inches:

Tails would get his on January 2022

Amy on February 2022

Knuckles and Eggman on June 2022

And Ray! on September 2022! alongside Metal Sonic

After that badniks (and mecha sonic (2023)) would be joining the series throughout the years. The 4 inch line would see a similar path but with different characters kinda? After Sonic in February we would see:

Mecha Sonic and Eggman in August 2021

Eggrobo in June 2022

Ray in September 2022

Tails in February 2024

Knuckles in March 2024

Amy in September 2024

(Yes, the classic figures really wouldnt get that much releases in the 4'' line ironically enough. It's kinda accepted that, proportions wise, Classic Characters work better as 2.5 inchers and Modern Characters work better as 4 inchers. Eggman, Mecha Sonic and the hardboiled heavies would release as 4 inchers though and they work better in proportion with the 2.5 inch sonic and friends)

What was that? Yes! The hardboiled heavies finally receive 4'' figurines! Heavy Gunner in December 2023 and Heavy King in the next wave March 2024! finally after 7 years after their debut game!

The other heavies have yet to recieve figurines but it's only a matter of time really. Especially since Fang released as a 2.5'' last August and Trip will be getting hers before the end of the Fall.

Which brings us back to my original point, We're finally getting new characters in Classic Sonic merchandising! The Hardboiled heavies were long overdue, and I was hesitant to consider them as a pivotal moment,,, they're older characters and badniks for one thing. But Fang??? Metal Knuckles??? Trip? Something must have changed in Sega's product team and imo this bodes well for the future. I won't get my hopes up and expect Bean or Bark despite them appearing in Sonic Mania and yes while they've been really active as of late due to IDW Fang the Hunter miniseries, Fang's inclusion is definitely a Sonic Superstars thing. It's safer to assume that characters who get figurines are most likely going to be those who've made an appearance in games. Which brings us to Metal Knuckles. who's a Sonic R character, sure, but his design and recent release definitely points to Sonic Superstars... where he shares his minor role with Metal Amy, Tails and Trip.... look. I'm just saying. I'd much rather see the Metal series come to Jakks Pacific more than the badniks or Rocky or Flicky or whatever.

A short review of every Funko Pop! released with Classic Sonic branding! Identified by the darker blue packaging and the old Sonic logo, this is the current lineup for every Classic Sonic Pop!

You might be wondering to yourself ''Funko Pop!s already chibi-fy the characters, giving them proportions one would usually find in Classic Sonic designs, how do you differentiate a Modern Sonic and a Classic Sonic?'' Which is a common sentiment when Funko first announced the very first Classic Sonic Pop! back in 2017! They managed to differentiate the two by giving Classic Sonic a noticeable rounder body, compare here:

Notice Classic Sonic's smaller proportions? They used to use the same head mold for both Sonics but starting with the Classic Super Sonic, they've been consistently giving him bigger eyes. I have no idea how they plan to tackle Classic Knuckles or Tails though...

Oh and what's that? Yes! You're right! That /is/ Metal Knuckles! His very first piece of Merchandise ever is a Funko Pop!

I'm of the opinion that ''The less human they are, the better they look as a Pop! (especially the more lifeless the character is)'' and I think the concept applies really well with Metal Knuckles! Sporting his refreshed design, his finish is metallic and the highlight imo is his eyes!

He looks especially well right next to the Metal Sonic Pop! Funko released last year. (Yes, this Metal Sonic is considered as part of the Modern line, it had a dual release with Modern Amy as a Sonic CD thing)

Unfortunately, as of the time of writing this post, most of the figurines here are currently no longer available on the Funko Online Store (you can still find them in physical stores if you're lucky!) except for the very first Classic Sonic figurine, Metal Knuckles and the (ugly as fuck) 8-bit trio
