It really hurts when a great character is introduced, you're attached to it, and then you can see that the writers don't care anymore, have little respect for the traits and complexities they built before, and the progression becomes something you didn't fall in love with in the beginning. The character is ... out of character. The lore that was set up before is not taken seriously. It's even more hurtful and mind-fucking when the fandom literally eats up anything they're given... they will just run with anything.

This has happened to me so many times, it never fails to make me go into depression-mode because of how much I devote myself to characters for escapism and it sucks that fanfiction won't solve my rage at the disrespect of a well introduced character who declines in accuracy, consistency and story arc etc.

All of my favourite characters of all time are botched. It's a weird, depressing pattern. Because then I have to move on and I feel empty again.

The scene right before the fight on the bifrost always gets me. I do believe in Thor 1 that Loki was trying to push Thor to hurt him. After all, Thor treats him terribly or outright ignores it when others do. Loki, in his very not right mind, probably thought that Thor knew of his heritage and that's why he goads him into attacking. He wants to know if the bond between them is really real or if Loki imagined that too. Thor not wanting to fight him is really flabbergasting to Loki. You can tell. Since when does Thor not want to fight? It makes no sense to him. Loki is losing his mind, wondering if everyone around him has been lying to his face for centuries, while Thor is struggling to comprehend why his bookworm usually peaceful brother is so hellbent on violence. But Loki knows Thor; he knows that all he has to do is say or do the right (wrong) thing and Thor will attack him. And like the brainless of he is, Thor does. It merely justifies itself in Loki's mind that maybe Thor never cared for him either. Odin saying no to him when he all he wanted was something, anything! from them, was really the straw that broke the camels back. Loki learned that day that even though he loved them with everything, they didn't love him with the same passion or strength.

And so he lets go.

I will never forgive Ragnarok for turning that into a fucking joke. Suicide or even thinking about hurting yourself is not funny. They took his identity crisis that Loki really struggled with for days and ultimately lost to and made a five second comedy bit from it. It was shit writing and just another way to dehumanize Loki and make him look a fool. That scene really made me hate the movie.

That said, I do believe that Loki loves and will always love his family. Hatred is not the opposite of love. Hatred means that your love was denied in some way or hurt in some way and, in turn, it makes you angry and hurt. If Loki didn't care he'd be indifferent. Frigga , Odin or Thor would no longer matter to him. The fact that he's capable of crying over these people who have hurt him so badly speaks volumes of the depth and breadth of his care for his family.

... He believes he hates them and it's not it. He doesn't trust them any more. It makes him furious that they lied to him about something so fundamental, so intrinsic to his very being. I think it makes him angry that he can't trust any of them. It hurts and upsets him tremendously that the people he thought the world of, are capable of such deception and harm.

You want to know the worst part? He's the only one who sees it.

I will not let you forget the fact that costume designers of T1 based the design of Loki's collar off Calla Lily, as a symbol of resurrection and self-sacrifice, and then the entity of phases 3 and four kept acting like Loki had to learn how to sacrifice himself as if his self-sacrificial nature wasn't a major part of what made him an antagonist of T1-

Speaking of the characters walking in circles, mcu Wanda is not the only one, mcu Thor seems to be pretty stagnant in his development too. TDW kinda tried, but still, since T1 he has learned precisely one lesson: don't be a bully. (Which he forgets in TR)

He still praises Odin. He still solves his problems with violence and murder. He still is incredibly insensitive towards other characters. Etc.

Unlike Wanda, he doesn't have unlimited powers that make him undefeatable, so he reads a bit less as a Marty Sue, but his writing is still pretty stagnant.

You love the scene of Loki and Natasha's interaction in A1 because you think it's Natasha being badass, I love this scene because I cannot interpret it in any way other then two professional manipulators having miscommunication issues.

He literally told Stark "that was the plan," when Tony informed him that he managed to piss off the world's most dangerous people. And... We got zero follow up.

Loki was borderline bashing his head on the wall because he started with hints, and then with Tony and Barton he basically told them he was messing up on purpose, and they still managed to go deaf and blind every time they talked to him!

Up until this day I have no idea why Heimdall chose to save Bruce in IW.

Like, sir, I get it, you're in love with treason, but I didn't think you would off asgardian line of succession the first opportunity you get.

It kind of gets me that when Loki tells him that Frigga has forbidden his return, Thor instantly believes it, and Loki knew that he'd believe it. (And Thor is so quick to tell Loki "Why don't you tell her how you tried to kill me and my friends?" after he rushes back to Asgard. It screams "Look what your precious baby has been up to, Mother.")

In contrast, Loki shows zero surprise when Frigga finds him and reaches to him via astral projection in the prelude comic, and the fact that she keeps doting on him after his return seems to be taken for granted. (And Thor is annoyed by that, but not surprised.)

There's no way in hell that Frigga would have ever forbidden Thor to return to Asgard. But there are issues if Thor can so easily believe that she would forsake him if he made a mistake (whereas the thought of being abandoned by his mother never even crosses Loki's mind). He believes that Loki is the one who has their mother's unconditional love while he has her "trust".

Those would have been such interesting issues to explore. Instead, they decided to just kill Frigga.

The incredible thing about this is that Frigga is outwardly far more affectionate toward Loki- and in a more superficial way, I think he’s obviously her favourite- but when you peel away the top layer of their family dynamic, in action, she’s far more preferential to Thor.

She was more than ready to make Thor king at the beginning of Thor 1 when he was visibly a dangerous douchebag- even going so far as to contradict Odin’s concerns about it- and while she was kind to Loki, she apparently never stopped to consider that her much more levelheaded second child might be a better fit. In a deleted scene, she gets into a shouting match with Odin over his banishment of Thor- insisting that he bring him back- but during Loki’s trial and imprisonment she makes no objection to odin’s (much harsher) punishment for Loki and gives no evidence at any point that she opposes it. In another deleted scene (or maybe the novelisation, idk), she assures Odin that Thor won’t be alone as king because he’ll have loki- then later in the movie, she leaves Loki completely alone on the throne while he’s having a personal crisis. In endgame, she gives Thor a very compassionate and supportive pep talk, but when she visits Loki in the dungeons, she only gaslights and attempts to manipulate him. And let’s not forget how she lied to and exploited Loki his entire life right along with Odin and genuinely didn’t think he had any reason to be angry about it.

And yet, almost none of this happened where Thor could see it (or at least, none of it was so blatant that he’d pick up on it). So, in Thor’s mind, he sees Frigga hugging Loki by Odin’s bedside and sneaking to the dungeons to visit him and sending him books in prison, and he naturally assumes Loki has her favour, which leads to jealousy. Meanwhile Loki is the one experiencing all these deeply backhanded things in full, while only seeing Frigga interact with Thor in a stereotypically maternal way. So he resents his brother for the good natured simplicity of their relationship.

And both brothers end up bitter toward the other for what they perceive the other to have. Thor thinks Frigga has a deeper relationship with Loki- and he’s right!- but its depth is ultimately just layers of toxicity. And Loki thinks Thor has an easier more uncomplicated relationship with Frigga- and he does!- but it’s ultimately shallow and generic.

TLDR- At first glance, it seems like Loki is Frigga’s favorite, but really she treats Thor better. And the way this parenting dynamic plays out leads to nothing but hurt and resentment on both sides.

Not to imply anything, but in A1 these two shots go back-to-back, which tells me Loki could have sent "the rest" through the portal to overwhelm the Avengers while they were separated and disorganised, and yet he waited until he saw the proof that the team has assembled with his own eyes, which is an interesting choice by Loki.

I do hate what the LS did to the "glorious purpose", because in the movies Loki uses the word "purpose" only twice:

"You took me for a purpose"

"I'm burdened with glorious purpose"

The first time, it's about Odin kidnapping a child in order to use them for his selfish reasons.

The second time, it's about Thanos basically enslaving someone, torturing and brainwashing them, in order to use them for his selfish reasons.

"Purpose" was something he was always "burdened" with. A symbol of exploitation. Lack of agency, lack of freedom. Being only valued and kept alive for the things he could do for them.

And LS twisted the meaning completely. Which I'm not surprised by at all, considering that only one of the creators ever watched the movies, and the only movie he watched was The Avengers, and he watched it when season 1 was in post production.

I hate that they had Mobius say "most purpose is more burden than glory" as if it's some revelation for Loki that inspired him to sacrifice himself for others. OG Loki has always viewed his "glorious purposes" as a burden and has already sacrificed himself for others multiple times. And yet we act like it's a huge character development, when it's just Loki walking in circles of giving up on himself again and again and again.

This! Starting with TR, MCU just forces Loki to walk in circles of coming to conclusion that he has to be less "selfish" and has to sacrifice everything about himself for other people and their approval, which originally was the entire reason he became a "villain" in the first place!
