[5:37pm] the familiar jingle of the bell above the store entrance alerts you to the arrival of a new customer. the bell had been ringing a lot more often these past days, dozens of parents coming to browse to find a gift for their little ones now that christmas day was nearing. as you lifted your head to the get a glimpse of the customer, your eyes recognized the mop of peroxide blonde hair over the shelf. the only oddball mixed between the stream of parents that usually sidled in, a young man around your age, sharp features and a very distinguishing hair color among the usual natural tones.
this was the third time he had entered the shop in the past week. he never bought anything, just browsed the shelves with apparent interest before disappearing again. normally you were to busy to strike up conversation, but now, you were alone in the store.
“you never buy anything.” the boy freezes in the middle of lifting up a lego star wars set.
he clears his throat, his gaze still fixed on the toy. “i- uh i’m having trouble picking something out for my little cousin.” at this, you step out from behind the cash register and settle next to the boy.
“well maybe i can help with that.” upon closer inspection, you could see the blush on the boys cheeks, still avoiding you. he held in a breath as if looking for the right thing to say before he seemed to sag in defeat.
“okay, here goes.” he scratches the back of his neck. “the truth is i’ve been coming in here for the past three days to try and ask for your number….”
he trails off and you can’t help the small laugh that bubbles out of your throat. “well,” you step closer so that the guy is forced to look at you.
“i think i can definitely help with that.”
