Taoism and Waves
by Saṃsāran
Taoism is known as “the Water Way” because the Tao is often spoken of in terms of flow, the flow of events and the flow of energy through the matrix of space-time. Like ripples in water or other media waves within the Tao react to one another and diffract and diffuse.
In all waveforms, there is the passive portion and the active portion. The yin and the yang. In physical waves, the active portion is the breaking edge of the wave otherwise known as a “cusp”.
This is where things happen. However, they happen based upon the flux of the passive portion so one can predict what will transpire in any given circumstance by studying the wave where it is NOT breaking. The same goes for life. Know where the lines of force are and use them to your advantage and avoid directly opposing them.
We can draw another example from martial arts. When an opponent attacks we do not meet his force directly with our force; instead, we deflect his force and momentum and use it against him. In this way, a smaller opponent can best a larger foe.
This is the way. This is the eternal Tao
