"But the song that ended up opening the album was the title track, this one. Tallahassee marked a radical departure in my writing method, though I didn't mark it at the time—nor, really, until just now. Prior to this album, when I sat down to write, I'd just pull something from the air and see if it had enough substance to become a song. There are countless songs in notebooks that never got there: things originating in a stray phrase or image that couldn't sew enough clothes around themselves to make a suit. But here, I knew what I was going to be writing about every time I picked up a pen. These people. Their house. Their lives. I didn't know it at the time, but the album was teaching me how to write a novel."
