Half Man // Fyodor Dostoevsky
ive been pondering this a lot because of the fic im writing but i think much of the reason younger ruben (sub)/consciously bullies niall into the closet isn't really because he cares if niall is gay or not, but because if niall is openly gay it would force him to examine their relationship (which he can't afford to diminish in closeness) through that lens to some extent. if they don't talk about it, and continue the facade of heterosexuality, their mutual attraction (that ruben is somewhat aware of) can continue as meaningless and their affection towards one another as purely familial, but if niall puts shape and words to his queerness, what does that mean for ruben? he can't not be uncomfortably close with niall and at the same time can't stand to face his own homosexuality because of his father and all the bundled up shame from being sexually abused by a man. so. the only option for both of them to keep this relationship is niall staying in the closet. and somewhere they both know this.

The first photo is from 1956. It shows a Black woman watching members of the Ku Klux Klan (a terrorist, racist, far-right organization focused on white supremacy) walking along a sidewalk in Montgomery, Alabama (USA). I couldn't find the photo's author, but most sources state that it was taken in 1956.
The second photo shows members of the Patriot Front group (a white supremacist and nationalist group, formed in 2017, that openly advocates what they call "American Fascism") traveling on the subway during the 250th anniversary of the U.S. independence in Washington D.C., while a Black woman watches them. The photo is by photographer Cheney Orr, taken on July 4, 2026, 70 years after the first photo.

ruben wanting more than anything to have a kept woman at home who he can provide for and care for and love and do everything for as long as she stays put not realizing that's literally niall, who's already a kept man at home who he's already providing for and caring for and loving and doing everything for and would be so happy to stay put just for him.
Richard Gadd writing imperfect survivors is so important to me. No one ever wants to think of survivors as fucked up in a way that isn't palatable or think of what happens if you don't have the resources to recover gracefully- they see it as a type of disrespect I think. I like a show that gives you a horrifying introspection to that. Trauma is something that will rot inside of you if you don't figure your shit out but a lot of people don't have the circumstances that allow them to do that. Or they don't have the language to even realize its happening. And like, people need to be aware of that. You think it can't happen to you but it can!! And the fact that half man specifically is all about the love can't be over looked. Like yeah, those are guys who could have been good if the situation was different but it wasn't. And love never made anyone more rational. And a lot of victims love their abusers. A lot of abusers love their victims. And it doesn't make it okay, but like again. You think it can't happen to you. But it can.

also something about how Niall's sexual trauma makes it so how he expresses hypersexuality in his homosexuality makes it so his homosexuality is considered something wrong and shameful even to people who in some technical theory would have supported him being gay.
I think the reason I'm still obsessed with niallby is that the picture we get of them is so incomplete. Because Half Man is such a trauma-focused series, we know all the big stuff - they've both faced violent homophobia and substance issues; how they've betrayed each other and what they've managed to salvage from the wreckage; they were the turning point in each others lives, initually for the worse and then for the better. But we don't know any of the small stuff. They're all headlines and no footnotes. We see almost their whole wedding, but we don't see them kiss at the alter. We don't see them drink from the quaich. It's pretty much all dark and no light. But there must have been light because why are they getting married if they don't have hope?? they didn't just sneak away to a registry office!! they had a cèilidh!!! you don't have a cèilidh if you don't have hope!!!!

i really like how nothing ever changed <3 ruben was always full of hate and pain niall was always bitter and mediocre lori was always distant and judgmental alby AND mona were always reckless and too forgiving time is a flat circle they failed every chance they were given and never broke free <3
niall kennedy is the funniest man alive like. he sends his brotherfromanotherlover to jail by refusing to lie for him and then proceeds to have a breakdown because what if he spends the next decade locked up only ever thinking about me and talking about me and dreaming about me and sends all these scary men after me so i'm going to put myself into all these vulnerable positions just in case. and THEN he finds out that ruben spend the decade reading and getting an education and was out of jail two years and no one said a fucking thing to niall and he fucking loses the plot all together. and THEN finds out that actually ruben DID think about niall all the time and even though he finds this out in the middle of ruben kicking the literal shit out of him the relief is so obvious and so the next time ruben gets sent to jail and it is NOT niall's fault this time but he still needs to be involved so he writes a book about his brother and then publicly crashes out when people ask about said brother. niall kennedy you will never die.
