Sleep Protection Spell Jar

A jar spell to help protect you during your slumber and keep negative entities and dreams at bay.

You Will Need:

💤 Bay Leaf (bring positive spells, empowers spell) 💤 Sea Salt (general protection, cleansing) 💤 Cinnamon (general protection) 💤 Sweet Grass (general protection) 💤 Sage (general protection, peaceful sleep, prevents nightmares) 💤 Rosemary (prevents nightmares, protection during sleep) 💤 Rose Buds/Petals (protection) 💤 Spearmint (general protection) 💤 Lavender (sleep, good dreams, peace) 💤 Chamomile (peaceful sleep, prevents nightmares) 💤 Mullein (prevents nightmares, protection during sleep, keeps nocturnal demons at bay) 💤 Jar 💤 (optional) Sigil for protection or nightmare prevention (or both)

Steps:

💤 Cleanse and wash out your jar before doing this spell. Make sure it is well dried.

💤 Inside in layers place your herbs, the order is unimportant. Do what feels right for you.

💤 Once it is full at the top if you are using a sigil add in the sigil or draw it on the lid.

💤 Screw on your lid tightly

💤 To seal the spell you may use wax (preferably light blue or white or black), an energy seal, a sigil, tape, or anything else that you feel will work for me. I used an energy seal placed with a kiss for mine.

💤 Place beneath your bed to bring you protection each night you sleep and keep negativity and negative entities at bay while you sleep.

💤 Cleanse and charge in the light of the full moon every month before placing back under bed.

🌫Nightmare Hex🌫

This hex is intended for someone who has tormented your thoughts for days on end. The kind of person that leaves you haunted by their actions or words, crippling you with anxiety.

The recipient of the hex will experience multiple nightmares depicting their darkest horrors over a 30 day period.

You will need:

🌙 Black Candle

🌙 Salt

🌙 Thin paper

🌙 Black pen/marker

🌙 Mugwort tea

🌙 Teacup

🌙 Spoon, stick or water and heat-proof wand

🌙 Chalk

🌙 Boiling water (be careful)

🌙 Amethyst

The Spell

🔮 Light your candle

🔮 Draw a pentagram on the underside of your teacup using the chalk

🔮 Write your target’s name on a small piece of thin paper and place inside the cup

🔮 Pour boiling water into the teacup

🔮 Take the amethyst into your non-dominant hand, and with your dominant hand using your utensil of choice, stir the tea clockwise and chant the following spell until the paper disintegrates in the water:

I send the spirit of your malice

To haunt you in your sleep

Bestial, dark and callous

Now fear shall make you weep

🔮 Sprinkle salt into the tea in a circular motion

Ritual:

To Acquiesce Information from the Dead

Collect some scruples of food: corn meal puddings flavored with hot peppers or cooked beans, unleavened bread sopped in vinegar and oil, vessels of spiced rum or unfermented grape juice, water or honey, extremely salted meat (that’s inedible by human standards) – whatever is feasible and fits your unique faith – and a pouch of coins (I don’t care what faith you’re in, if you’re working in the cemetery, you pay, simple as). At the Gates of the Cemetery, leave your food offering, and some coins – actual silver, copper and gold are great, but damn near impossible to come by. Don’t by stingy. As you do so, read the above “prayer” or give them the abridged version: “Thank you, keep doing what you’re doing, we’re very grateful…”

If you require knowledge from a specific spirit and can readily access their grave, you should also bring something for them – perhaps something they liked or something that reminds you of them. It is also good to keep something that belonged to them on your person.

Leave the offerings at their grave and skip to the reading.

If you do not need an answer from a specific spirit or cannot readily access their grave, you’ll have to do a little asking about. Even if you aren’t a medium, simply vocalize (softly, don’t yell, they’re dead, not deaf) 1) whom you wish to speak with or 2) the question you need answered or information you seek.

If they come quickly, perfect. Ask, vocalize, and ask that they convey the information to you in your preferred medium (dream, cards, séance, whatever) – if not, grease the gears with this addition to the above Prayer:

“I walk amongst your children,

Now – it is answers that I seek,

Keeper of the Dead, I ask:

Bring to me the Soul –

I seek; Unveil –

The hidden visage;

And the answers

That they keep…”

Wait. Listen. Feel. When they arrive you’ll always feel it first. If they do not, try again another night – they aren’t made to serve your beck and call.

Breathing Life

Dolls and poppets are utilized across many faiths, however often witches neglect to “breath life” into them. Not doing so doesn’t make them wholly ineffective, however going the extra step really amps up the potency, especially when using it as sympathetic magic or creating a protective being! It’s a relatively simple step, but highly dependent upon which path you follow. I’ll briefly cover my methodology.

Foremost, I would like to specify the difference between the two types of dolls I utilize. One being sympathetic magic, the one most often thought of when people think of dolls and witchcraft. Voodoo dolls. This is a misnomer, as the common portrayal off voodoo dolls in media have skewed the original purpose of such dolls. Originally the dolls were used by practitioners not to affect people, but as a guide to the sufferers ailments and treatments – more akin to a “medical chart.” However, they have since (and really, in European magical traditions for centuries) been used to heal or harm a specific victim in which the doll was made to their likeness. This is a sympathetic doll, made in their likeness, usually incorporating some sort of personal affect (hair, clothing, blood, etc.).

The second type, and the kind I most often use, are dolls not based on any individual, but instead exist to act as a guardian of sorts or facilitate change/growth/health/etc. These are unique and very much a product of your imagination. Create them to be whatever you see fit.

That being said, let’s begin;;

Sympathetic Dolls: Begin by first, stitching the doll together in the likeness of he/she you wish to influence. You can be as general or as specific as you want – matching hair, eyes, facial features, build are all common concepts. Traditionally the dolls were stuffed with Spanish Moss (most probably due to the abundance in the American South) however you can stuff it with anything you have on hand. If you have anything of the persons, now would be the time to use it, hair can be wrapped and stuffed in the doll, pieces of their clothes can be folded and placed inside, blood should be on a scrap of cloth, dried and then added.

Once the doll is complete and you’re satisfied with its image (in truth, dolls have been made out of anything and everything, the only crucial step is the following), you must give it life. For sympathetic dolls, this can be as simple or difficult as you wish. I prefer to take the simple route and sit with the doll and focus intently on the person you wish to connect to it. I then mentally stitch the spirit of the person to the doll (either at the heart or at the feet – as a short of shadow). Vocalize your intent and revel in your creation.

Conceptual Dolls/Guardians: These are my personal favorites to create, in all honesty. I find poppets to be a lot of extra work, however they are useful in remote healing/hexing. These, as I mentioned, are beings of your thoughts. Tulpas, in a way. Begin by gathering your materials and ideas. Create a doll to symbolize whatever you wish to accomplish. As far as this tutorial goes, I’ll use the example of a Guardian or a doll for protection. It can look however you wish, and be as simple as sticks tied together, to the most intricately created doll you could muster. I, personally, stick with a small doll (no bigger than 8 or 10 inches) with yarn hair, simple clothing and a painted face. I often stuff mine with herbs associated with my will, as well as batting and sometimes stray scraps of fabric.

After your doll is complete, take it to the Crossroads. It can be a door, a gate (I use the gate of a remote cemetery near me), a cemetery, even a maternity ward if you’re that committed and light a candle. Fill your mind with intention, then connect with the energy of your crossroads. Feel the planes converge, and bend this erratic energy to your will, funneling it through your consciousness and into your doll. See the energy shape, bend, coalesce into a being of your intent and give it a Name, as there is much power in a Name. Connect its energy to our physical plane by allowing it refuge within the fabric of the doll you have created. Leave a gift at the Crossroads, and blow out your candle, sealing in the doll’s spirit. Use it as you desire, but do not neglect it.

Communing with the Dead

‘Tis Necromancy season! Autumn – the Dying Time – when the lines that bissect fade into a liminal channel. Of course, the Dead are never far from me, but not all share my inclinations. For those of you seeking temporary “admittance” into the world of the Dead, I’ve brought to you a ritual that might allow you to ride the boundary. In essence, it is similar in part to me previous post Walking on Water (about hedgeriding), though with the specific purpose of contacting the Cold Ones.

The process – in theory – is quite simple, though some will undoubtedly find it easier than others based on their own innate talents. Regardless, it should allow for contact in one form or another.

Things You Will Need:

A Shovel/Spade

Mugwort, dried

Wormwood, dried

Mullein, dried

Rolling Paper/Emptied Cigarette

Liquid Oil (of your choosing)

Preparation:

Begin by drawing the following sigil on a square of paper. Burn the paper in a fire-safe dish or your working vessel – such as a pot or cauldron. Collect the ashes and add them to a few tablespoons of oil, mixing thoroughly. If you desire, you can warm the oil and add in some black wax shavings to give it a more robust, black color.

Take your rolling paper/empty cigarette tube and roll or stuff with a mixture of the above herbs. Don’t worry – wormwood has a surprisingly light taste when smoked, nothing like its brewed taste. Feel free to add in lavender, bay, marigolds, or thyme for added flavor and effectiveness. Tobacco may also be added, as it too has connotations with the dead. If you are unfamiliar with rolling, smoking (though this blend – sans tobacco – should have little to no longstanding effects on health, as none are addictive, mullein has even been used to aid smokers in quitting) or prefer otherwise, they can be burned as a loose incense on a briquette – if you choose the latter root, I’d say opt as well for a bit of sandalwood.

Ritual:

When night has set in and you’ve made your preparations, take your oil, smoke/incense and shovel/spade to a nearby graveyard – one that is comforting and secluded being the best, though if you wish to make contact with a particular spirit, it would be ideal to go to their grave (if possible). Pay the Gatekeeper, and make your way to the center or a crossroads if one exists. Once you have found an appropriate location that suits you, take your shovel (this is why seclusion is best – you don’t want to get thrown in the pokey for “attempted grave-robbing”) and dig into the earth. You don’t need to dig far, only six inches or so, loosening the dirt. Remove your shoes.

Center yourself, taking a few deep breaths. Light your cigarette/incense, breathing in the smoke (for those of you who aren’t seasoned smokers, do not breath the smoke directly into your lungs – first draw it into your mouth, then into the lungs… unless there also happens to be marijuana involved, in which case, straight to the lungs). Close your eyes, calm yourself and relax. Don’t let the graveyard intimidate you. When you feel ready – slip your feet into the earth, covering them with the removed dirt. Pat the oil onto the lids of your eyes – using it in moderation. It will makes your eyes feel strange and your lashes stick together – but only momentarily.

Verbalize your request. Ask that you might be allowed (temporary) entry into realm of the Dead. If you wish to speak to a specific person, ask them (nicely) to present themselves. The Dead are not seen with the eyes – remember that. And pay close attention to your intuition. You will feel their presence when they arrive. Trust yourself and your abilities and you should have no problem. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to bring an offering to leave for their help.

When you are finished, remove your feet from the soil and replace the moved dirt. Drizzle the remaining oil over the earth, and thank them again for their help and guidance. As is customary, take three steps back, turn around and do not look back as you walk away.

La Muñeca de Tutela

La Muñeca de Tutela, or “Doll of Tutelage,” is something that – to the best of my understanding – crosses nearly all faiths and is utilized by most traditions, even if I find very few modern mentions. Which is upsetting, if I dare say – something I find that most solitary witches (like myself) could truly benefit greatly from.

The idea surrounding La Muñeca de Tutela, is simple: it is a vessel that anchors a spirit or guide to the physical plane. It’s really that simple – most dolls and poppets used in the craft have similar purposes, but La Muñeca de Tutela has a more concise job. It is used as vessel for a teacher or guide entity – of any number of origins, depending on one’s specific craft or needs. A few examples being: ancestral teachers, former lives, familiar spirits, animal totems, etc.

The process of creation is as simple or difficult as you desire to make it, but I will outline my own process that I have used most readily (in that it’s not the only processed I’ve used, but basic enough to be altered in any way one sees fit).

Things You Will Need:

A Vessel

A Door

A (preferably Willing) Spirit

That’s not so hard, is it? But I will be the first to say – being a medium helps, if not even almost necessary to utilize this process. There are many ways to convene with spirit, but trust me when I say for this – mediumship makes things a lot simpler.

For my process, I usually use a rudimentary doll as a vessel. Something simple, plain and unspecialized – (if I know who I wish to bind the doll to, I will cater its appearance to that of the spirit, and, if not, will leave it plain until I come to meet the spirit that inhabits it, then specialize it). Don’t let that deter you. You can use anything from a rock to (while not suggested) another human.

*for ancestral dolls, I also recommend the use of your own blood, wherein they still reside*

As for a Door – that’s quite simple. In favor of an actual door, which would actually work just fine, I create a door with chalk. In fact, I have a chalk door drawn on the wall of my bedroom so that I might invite any spirit through (otherwise, my bedroom is barred to all spirits). While it is preferable to know a spirit by name, charms and conditions may be scribed around the door – inviting a willing spirit of x, x, and x criteria to pass through and make your acquaintance.

Which, of course, leads to the last ‘item:’ The spirit. Undoubtedly the most important part – be cautious about who you invite. Always. Much less ones you ask for Guidance. Be cautious, be weary and be safe. Conditions are key. Invitations are much like wishes – think things through to their entirety. And then do it again. Once written or vocalized, the invitation may be done. At which point, discuss with the spirit the conditions of this agreement, and their “qualifications.” And yours, for that matter. Understand that this relationship will most likely entail mutual respect and obedience. While it’s not impossible to find a spirit charitable to Guide simply out of the kindness of their heart, it’s rare.

When all things are accounted for, connect the spirit in whichever way you see fit to the vessel. It’s nice to present it with a small offering, a token of thanks for their travel, if you would. Place the vessel in a convenient location or one of the spirits behest.

Do not take them for granted.

Do not believe, for a moment, that you own them.

And be receptive to their tutelage.

To sever the tie, explain to them that no longer are they bound to the vessel, and thank them (regardless) for their guidance. Deconstruct the vessel or wash with salt and vinegar.

To Conjure a Familiar Spirit

I regularly get quite a few asks in regards to recommended books – asking if I have a list, etc. – and I always have to go into an explanation about, while learning from books is perfectly fine and fitting for some (I dare say even many) the true body of my practice comes not from books, but from teaching spirits. Yes, I can’t deny, I’ve read plenty of books, but they never stick with me like the lessons learned through spirit. Of course, I’m also the person who is always saying: Just do it.

Witchcraft is a continuous learning experience and sometimes you have to just trust yourself to get things done. There always seems to be a lot of fear-mongering in the community: words of warning, deterring and mysterious statements – all of which I’ve never bought in to. I’m all for pushing you into the pool – sink or swim – and if all else fails, I’ll throw you a line and drag you back out (with an wink). Fear is the Witch’s worst enemy: fear of the Unseen, fear of the Unknown, fear one’s true nature, and it is in the deep and dark recesses that one might find truth. Do not give into the fear – overcome it – for when the mind is poisoned by fright, the frightful things come knocking.

I digress. Familiar spirits: the wise and knowing (occasionally mischievous) dead – be they devils, discarnate witches, Ancestors, it matters not! For the Witch and the Familiar are a dynamic pair!

Conjuration

In the night, collecting your items which you will take with you to the cemetery: Chalk/Pemba, a black/white/red candle and a few offerings that echo who you are. These offerings – paired with later spoken words – will attract like-entities who jive with who you are and what it is that you seek. You may bring a vessel with which to house the spirit, or – as I recommend – you may wait and create a vessel befitting the spirit, with touches of personal flare. These offerings need not be extravagant. Things like: beads, coins, spirits (as in the alcohol kind), food, fabrics, and anything that you think sums up who you are.

Once you arrive, locate a place such as a mausoleum, a brick gate-column, anywhere with a wall on which you might draw a door. It’s best to choose a place where no one person is interred, but a variety or none at all. This is so that you don’t get stuck kicking it with whoever happens to be buried there and disturbing their “peaceful rest” or what have you. In regards to the door, don’t be afraid to personalize it as well! I’ve always been favorable to the pointed-arch, but do what you feel fits.

Arrange your offerings before its mouth and place the candle at its center. Take a moment to collect yourself and focus on the kind of person you wish to bring through. Don’t dwell on minor details, just construct a general energy or set of principles. Alternately, you can ask for someone who will give you what you need and not what you want. This is for those who wish to grow and grow quickly, accepting the obstacles that come along with growth. When you’re fully prepared, light you candle and place your palm on the door.

Make a plea. Ask (aloud is best) for a spirit to come – one willing to teach, one glad to teach (and perhaps one that is patient, if you happen to need that!). Again, don’t get bogged down in the details. Be specific enough, but receptive to what Spirits come. Knock three times – Beetlejuice, anyone? – and wait. It may take a few moments (I like to blame in on the traffic) but you will know when they have come. Having the Sight helps, but so long as you are attune, their presence will be clear. Introduce yourself – if fitting your abilities, allow them to introduce themselves, as well. Sometimes names are a little tricky to make out – for me, anyway – so it may take a while before you get their name down completely. If you cannot hear them, you may give them a name: you’ll know whether or not they like it, don’t worry! If they don’t, keep spit-balling until you get one that sticks.

Spend a few days getting to know them – it may work out, it may not. Be amicable, you can always repeat the process if you don’t jive quite right. If you get on nicely, however, you should construct a Spirit Vessel! It offers them a physical attachment to our plane and thereby allows their energy greater access to this world. After that – I can’t say, as all relationships are different and all have different lessons to teach and values to instill. It can be a very personal experience and you may find that keeping a journal of their teachings valuable, and it’s always fun to look back on the how far you’ve come.
