iāve seen the harry potter movies dozens of times, but iāve never actually looked though them frame by frame, without the drama & distraction that music and motion adds to it. bc letās be real, who has the time for that?
however, the other day, when i was pretty bored and decided to attempt to make an edit, i was looking through screencaps from deathly hallows part 2, i noticed a couple things.Ā
heās just crawling, because he needs to get to the elder wand, right? no. heās crawling. the greatest dark wizard of all time is crawling.Ā itās so undignified and not in character. and look at his face. look at how desperate he is. he needsĀ to get to his wand before harry gets to his. he needsĀ to kills harry while he still has a chance.Ā because as long as harry lives, the prophecy can still be fulfilled and not in voldemortās favor. he is so desperate thatĀ he is resorting to doing things the muggle way.
we never see him like that. weāve seen him worried, sure. but not desperate. voldemort is many things, arrogant being only one of them. he never thought that heād ever have to face the possibility of death. but there he stands, facing harry potter. the boy he was unable to kill all those years ago. facing the only person that can defeat him.Ā then i noticed this gem:
if you look closely, you can see what looks like a tear in his eye. one the website where i got these, there are two other caps similar to this one. but this is the only one where the tear shows up. when have we ever seen voldemort even close to crying? never. we hardly see him conveying any sort of emotion. whenever we see voldemort, heās generally all high and mighty. better than everyone else. borderline royalty. too important to deal with trivial matters.
so i saw both of these things, and i realized that itās as human as we get to see him in the films. the death that we see in the film completely ignores the importance of his mortal death that takes place in the books, as many have pointed out.
believe me, it bothers me as much as the next person. but in these tiny moments we the tiny shred of humanity that voldemort possesses. we see the barely there mortal side of him.
his facade cracked. because underneath his need for power and immortality, there was still a fraction of his soul left, as minuscule as it may be. to me, i donāt see voldemort in these caps. i see tom riddle. i see a human. one that is absolutely terrified in facing the possibility of death.
