He kept his words brief, his usual loopy calligraphy smudged against the plastic. He'd get Mercury to deliver the records tonight, as a final parting gift."

Harry Potter Horcrux AU

Harry Potter being a horcrux should’ve had a far greater impact to the story from the start BECAUSE ANGST!!!

Since childhood Harry has always been treated poorly by those around him, and especially by his relatives. He never understood why but anyone who stays with him for extended periods of time would eventually grow to hate him, leaving him friendless. He grew to believe he was the problem for being strange and unlovable.

That is until he meets Hagrid who shows him nothing but kindness and gives him his first gift. Harry believes it’s only a matter of time before Hagrid hates him too, but it never happens. He meets a lot of people who are kind to him at first, but all of them distance themselves from him except Hagrid.

Then he meets Dumbledore who seems to notice something, but can’t explain what it could be. It’s only later when his new friends begin to show the same sign of becoming cruel that he is pulled away and taken to Dumbledore. Harry just believes it was inevitable that he’d be kicked out and shunned by everyone, only for Dumbledore to apologize as he casts some sort of spell on him. He receives no explanation before being sent back to continue his regular schedule.

Suddenly people begin approaching him again, his friends apologize profusely for being mean, and he no longer receives looks of disdain and caution. Harry can’t believe what’s happening but he’s too happy to question it.

It’s later that he noticed the familiar face of his neighbor going through the hallway towards Dumbledore’s office. He heard her crying saying “Why didn’t I do anything? How could I just watch it all happen? He’s a child!”

He didn’t understand but Dumbledore merely comforted her saying, “It’s not your fault. You didn’t know. None of us knew.”

During vacation, Harry had no choice but to return to the Dursley’s only to be greeted by subdued silence. Dudley would still act like his selfish self but he no longer made his snide remarks at Harry. Patunia began doing most of the chores and no longer ordered Harry around. Vernon merely ignored him. Eventually he was quietly moved out of the cupboard and into his own room.

Harry couldn’t understand the change and he didn’t until Hermione began studying about the Horcruxes. She wasn’t even sure if she should tell him at first, but something must have been done in their first year for the effects of the Horcrux to suddenly vanish. That’s when Harry put the pieces together and found out what Dumbledore did for him all those years ago. Now they have a way to suppress the horcruxes as they find a way to destroy them.

So basically this would explain why his family is cruel, why the one assigned to watch him never did anything about the abuse, and why Dumbledore didn’t do anything since he also had no idea Harry was a Horcrux. Also, Hagrid being a half giant and being naturally resistant to magic is why he can be so nice to Harry. I could be forgetting some stuff, but this makes so much sense in my brain.

Two Thoughts:

People forget that Quirrell is the only other person in the series besides Harry to experience being a horcrux. He is the temporary horcrux; Harry is the accidental one. It blows my mind when I think about that because I can’t even fathom what that must’ve been like. I imagine maybe similar to when the kids wore the locket. Except that Quirrell was alone. Every day. For almost a year. With no support and no one to share the burden, his body dying by inches from the possession.

We know Harry was emotionally unpleasant for Voldemort to possess. I wonder if Quirrell was any easier to tolerate? They both seem more willing to accept the costs of certain outcomes, at the very least. The text tells us Quirrell was punished more than once for resisting his master's commands, so that's a strike against him, I suppose. If I put on my Voldemort hat, I suspect Quirrell's persistent feelings of inadequacy would be irritating, too, but useful. Still easier to tolerate than Harry, maybe?
