This place is not a place of honor... no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here... nothing valued is here.
What is here was dangerous and repulsive to us. This message is a warning about danger.
The danger is in a particular location... it increases towards a center... the center of danger is here... of a particular size and shape, and below us.
The danger is still present, in your time, as it was in ours.
The danger is to the body, and it can kill.
The form of the danger is an emanation of energy.
The danger is unleashed only if you substantially disturb this place physically. This place is best shunned and left uninhabited.
Anon: A thing that I imagine has always been a part of the experience of "this place" –
Me: I don't know what this place is.
Anon: Oh, it's part of a message, and part of a culture, isn't it?
Me: But I know what messages and cultures are, and I know they're not the same.
Anon: What do you mean?
Me: I'm talking about some feature of human experience that's been common enough that it feels like a core part of our nature, without being a defining element of our existence
Anon: I feel like I don't understand.
Me: It's more like I'm talking about the experience of seeing a message – this thing you're thinking about, "this thing" – and I'm saying that you're missing out on something important about "this place" if you just dismiss it as a "message."
Anon: I can see that messages and cultures are part of human experience. But what is this place? Is it a place at all, or something else?
Me: It's a type of message, which is typically one which has a "meaning" – but it's a message that is given "energy" by the presence of a culture.
Anon: Does it have a "culture"?
Me: …look, I'm sorry, I've lost my fucking mind here, I don't know what is going on, I'm so fucking incoherent, I don't know if I'm coherent at all.
Anon: What do you mean?
Me: this place, this whole place, it's a message, it's part of a culture, it's part of a system of messages –
Anon: I don't get it –
Me: …it's saying "look, we're in danger, we have a danger, we can see it, we can know what it is, we can know how to fight it, we can see its shape, we can know how to hit it, we can see you, we can know where to find you, we can know who to hurt, we can know how to hurt, we can know what to do when we're hit, we can know what to say to get hit, we can know what to do when we're hit, we can know the names of people who can hurt, we can know the names of people who can't, we can know what they're thinking, we can know how to move when we're hit, we can know how to block when we're hit, we can know how to block when we're hit – look, we're in danger, this place is a message, the danger is there, we can see it, the danger is energy, the danger is focused, the danger is focused on the center, the center is there, the danger is there, we can know it, the danger is here, it's here, we can touch it, we can walk through it, we can ride a bike through it, we can see it, it's here."

Me: Yes, I mean if you were to take the place at face value – and by doing so you'd be saying "it's a person, and it wants to hurt us, and it's there" – then yes, you can see it.
Anon: "the danger is there"?
Me: Yes, you can see it as such, yes.
Anon: "the danger is focused on the center"?
Me: No, no, no, it's got an unfocused mass of danger and nothing really seems to be going in any one particular direction.
Anon: "the danger is there"?
Me: Yes, it's there.
Anon: "we can know it"?
Me: Yes, we can know it, yes.
Anon: "…it's here, it's here, we can see it, it's here."
Me: No, it's not here, look, we're going to destroy this place –
Anon: we're going to get through this?
Me: – but you don't have to believe me, you can look at this place –

Me: – which I'm going to describe to you, and which is going to be overwhelmingly horrible and awful, because we're going to destroy this place –

“I think there’s a rich ream of horror, from The Haunting of Hill House to Ghostwatch, that delves into the idea that certain places can simply go wrong – and once these bad environments have been established and ostracised by society, they can’t be exorcised. They simply keep accruing power through the individual stories that play tragically out in their shadow.

“If I’m sitting alone at home on a dark and stormy night, and I glance nervously up towards the bedroom doorway, my fear is not that my house is being haunted by a spirit called Mabel who died in the 19th century at the age of fourteen and is constantly seeking her favourite teddy bear… because all of these details both humanise her and make her ridiculous.
“My fear is that there will be something standing in the doorway, because the doorway is where things come to stand.
“Because unoccupied spaces, in our imaginations, must find something to fill them.”
