  "I knew you were gonna say that, but why don’t we take a break first." He pulls a sucker out of his pocket and gives it to her. "This is candy from my world and it comes in many flavors." He had a whole stack of it in a bag just something to keep his energy up since water was another thing he carried on him as well.

Nel took the candy in both her hands, eyeing it suspiciously, before popping it into her mouth. She’d never had candy from the human world before! Normally she just soaked up the spirit particles that were so abundant here in Hueco Mundo and oH GOODNESS THIS CANDY WAS REALLY GOOD!!

"AH!, Dis- dIS IS AMAZIN’!!"

Ichigo smiled a little when he saw that Nel loved the candy. He never met any child (though he knew she wasn’t really one), would refuse candy. “Hey Nel, careful don’t talk with ya mouth full, you might choke.” He added showing her some more in his bag, but keeping it firmly tight in his clutches so she would’nt think of running off with it.”

"I wa'wnt." It was a pitiful argument, considering that she was still talking around the candy in her mouth. Pudgy hands rose to wipe at the drool on her chin, those same hands moving to wipe against her cloak a moment later in an attempt to rid them of their stickiness. She hungered for that candy in the same way hollows would hunger for souls, vibrant eyes keeping a careful, almost predatory watch on that bag. She was almost done with the candy in her mouth, what with the strength behind her remaining teeth. She wanted more.

Loneliness was the equivalent of torture.

That was what this young boy thought anyway. Having lived out most of his childhood alone and hated, he truly felt bliss when around his pirate crew. Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Robin, Franky, Brook. Those names, those faces, they were enough to spark joy in the boy’s heart, as they were the only people in the world who would treat him like family. And why was he so isolated from the rest of society? It was because he wasn’t normal.

Yes, as anyone with eyes could see, the boy walking down the street that day was a small, anthropomorphic reindeer. Not attractive and muscular as the internet would interpret “furries,” but instead, he was short and somewhat cartoonish, more along the lines of “cute” than “handsome.”

Walking along the forest path with a small “squeak” emitting from his hooves, the boy let out a small sigh as the brown fur on his bare torso was gently blown by the breeze of the outside air. His arms and legs were scrawny, but that didn’t seem to bother him. After all, the pain of boredom dulled his physical exhaustion. As he walked, his maroon colored shorts appeared to have some dirt on them, indicating that he’d been doing some outside activities, possibly even rock climbing or brawling. For these two long years, of which only six months had past, he was to be training himself in preparation for his crew’s reunion. As he walked, however, he could only stare blankly at the thought of how boring the rest of his training would be. “Luffy… everyone. I miss you guys.” He seemed to whine to himself in a soft voice, reminiscent of a child’s own. He couldn’t have sounded older than an eleven year old.

That was when he spotted her. A young looking girl. What luck! People were hard to come across in the forest! Of course, unlike her, Chopper had been alone all this time. He couldn’t guess how happy and cheerful she was just by a first glance, so he rushed towards the girl, his bored gaze brightened into an excited grin.

Finally stopping in front of the girl, Chopper tilted his head upward, hoping she’d realize that he’d stopped in front of her. Despite his abnormal appearance, two things were likely to catch her attention. First, Chopper’s blue nose, which earned him discrimination from other reindeer even before he was an anthropomorphic being. Second, on Chopper’s left antler, a brace was wrapped around the center, keeping it together after a brutal beating when he was younger. Despite such a sign of injury, Chopper’s warm smile towards this girl showed that he had nothing but friendly intentions. Without hesitation, the boy placed his hoof atop the girl’s knee as gently as he could, hoping to get her to lower her gaze to him. “Excuse me!” These were the only two words he’d excitedly cheered out, awaiting a response before doing anything else.

She was lost.

It was a fact that Nel Tu had accepted several hours ago, upon the sudden realization that her brothers were no longer trailing along behind her. How, exactly, she'd been able to loose two Arrancar and their giagantic pet Bawabawa was a mystery, but not one Nel had really bothered herself with. She had bigger concerns! Like finding her brothers, rather than wondering how she and they had gotten themselves so lost in the first place!!

The human world was far scarier than her own, even with the general absence of large, hungry hollows that would gobble her up whole and use a tree branch as a toothpick afterwards. It was busy, filled with rocks and trees and roads and people and houses and animals that never seemed all that bothered by her presence, even when she walked really close to them. It was nothing like Hueco Mundo, with its sand and occasional trees and large, unfriendly residents. Getting lost in Hueco Mundo was one thing, but getting lost in the human world was even worse! There were so many places to loose someone!! And so many things to hide behind, or fall down, or fall into!!

So, when one hour had turned into two, which had turned into four, Nel could only assume the worst.

Her brothers had been EATEN!

Or- or perhaps they'd been caught by a shinigami!!!

Or perhaps they'd gotten so lost that Nel would never ever find them again!!

The prospect of losing her brothers forever was a crippling one, and Nel, tired and hungry and scared, found that her little feet could carry her no further. So she sat, knees pulled up to her chest and big, fat tears rolling down her cheeks. She didn't want to cry- big girls didn't cry, after all, and she was an arrancar!!- but right now, all she really wanted was someone to find her. She'd called for Ichigo, called for her brothers, called for the nice woman with the orange hair that Ichigo had carried like a sack of potatoes and called heavy despite never ever supposed to call a woman that-but alas, she was still alone. Still tired, still hungry, and still lost.

She'd been so distracted by her own horrible, horrible misfortune that she hadn't heard the approach of another, what with her face buried in her knees and her small, stifled sobs filling her ears with woe. It was only when something touched her knee did she look up, all red eyed and snotty-faced and tear-streaked, to see- well, something standing before her.

"Wh-who're y-you?" A pudgy hand came up to wipe messily at her face, not wanting to be seen crying in front of a stranger. A peculiar stranger! He definitely wasn't a human, but Nel had been under the impression that animals in the human world couldn't talk!

Still, he was someone, and with someone around, Nel was no longer alone.

Well, she didn’t understand, but she also didn’t want to end up dead, so the child nodded hurriedly even while her confused expression gave her away. So, Ichigo owed Grimmjow a fight? But Grimmjow had lost! At least, from where she’d been standing, the battle had looked like it was finished. So why was the other arrancar still so intent on battling when Ichigo had clearly come out as the winner?? What made their battle unfinished??

Was it the fact that neither one of them had died? That seemed harsh, even in the barren wasteland that she and the other arrancar lived in. Or was it that Grimmjow didn’t consider the fight finished until he’d overcome Ichigo and all his power? If that was the case, Nel feared that Grimmjow would be trying to battle Ichigo for a long time.

She isn’t much help in ways of finding out what he missed and she asks too many questions, but that’s to be expected from a tiny brat. He doesn’t know how she survived so long. What Hollow was stupid enough to see her as family and protect her? Regardless, the exchange left him annoyed and she looked like she still didn’t fully understand. He doesn’t intend to keep explaining what she isn’t mature enough to grasp.

Well, that was her cue to get out of there. Honestly, it was a miracle that she'd survived for so long already! She wasn't about to tempt fate by asking another question when her first two seemed to have irritated him so much!

So, she grabbed small, pudgy handfuls of her cloak and bolted, scrambling and slipping on the soft sand until she'd reached a distance that she seemed safe, in all her childish naivety. It was then, and only then, that she dared turn around and ask her third question.

"Mista Sexta- if youse find Itsygo an' fight 'im, will that make youse happy?"

"A spider that didn’ make webs t’catch an’ eat bugs??" No, she’d never heard of that one before!! Eagerly, the tiny arrancar set herself down, legs crossed and hands braced on her ankles. She didn’t know many stories; the only ones she’d heard were from her brothers, and even so, they were lacking in creativity and always sort of- well, horrifying.

"Well you see, this spider made a lot of friends! Friends with butterflies, and dragonflies. He was happier than ever! But…sometimes other spiders would put him down and make him feel like he didn’t fit in anywhere. He didn’t eat the bugs like normal spiders…and didn’t spin webs…and he didn’t eat what the butterflies or dragonflies ate either—but really, he insisted on being a vegetarian! Can you believe that!? Every day, he would nibble on a leaf, and call it breakfast, lunch, and dinner!"

Nel sat in revered silence, listening to the tale with wide, disbelieving eyes. A spider that only ate leaves?? She'd never heard of such a thing! Although, the spiders she was used to seeing were vastly different to the one in Orihime's story. They were also hollows. They were also far larger than she was, and would have no qualms with eating her had a chance arisen. Imagining a spider that ate nothing but leaves for breakfast, lunch and dinner was almost impossible!

"But- but- if th'spider only ate leaves, didn'e get bored??" Nel was sure she would have! Leaves were so boring! Why would anyone want to eat leaves when they could have tasty bread and candy and other food from the human world??

  "Ah, no no no!! It’s not gonna be cheating.." His voice trying to convey patience and playfulness to children. He pulled the lollipop out of his mouth to speak clearer.

"If you don’t like me, I’ll call on Ichigo to help you. He is your friend too, right?"

Some clue that Ichigo was a good bait to make the child say yes was one of his solution.

She gasped loudly, the candy almost falling out of her mouth as childish glee took over. 

"Youse is gonna call Itsygo t'play??" Ichigo was great fun!! He had played eternal tag with her before, even if she'd taken his giant sword as bait! Getting him to play super-awesome-hide-and-seek with her would no doubt be even better!! 

All of a sudden, it didn't matter whether or not calling on friends to play was cheating; and this strange candy man with the weird hat had undoubtedly earned her favour, even if he hadn't offered her any more candy. He had more, she could smell it, but for now she was distracted enough by the sweet in her mouth and the idea of Ichigo and the candy-hat man and her brothers all playing together.

She’d angered him; she could tell. Slate eyes fell back to the sand, pudgy fingers worrying a loose thread as his reiatsu curled and growled as though it were a living creature. Had she any less nerve, she’d have taken that as a cue to leave.

But, despite the risk of death, Grimmjow’s answer hadn’t been enough to sate her childish curiosity. With her eyes still trained on the sand below her feet, and her fingers twisting and tugging at the thread she’d only managed to pull further, Nel risked everything by asking yet another question.

"But why??”

Reiatsu snapped like a burning current of electricity when she spoke again. She is naive and obnoxious, pressing the question without knowing any better. No, even she knew what she was provoking. It was just that inexplicable compassion she had for the Shinigami. 

"He owes me the fight we agreed to and never finished. I’ve wanted to tear him apart since I saw him and fought him the first time. If you don’t understand, you’re better off dead."

He didn’t care for revealing the deeper truth or his grudges to a brat. Instinctive hatred because the Shinigami had shown how much stronger he became, actually scraping through his hierro and landing serious damage. Rivalry because he was dangerous and Grimmjow wanted to tear him apart at full power, to prove that he could still take down strong foes, to be the strongest.

"Why d’youse always gotta be fightin’ with Itsygo?"

It was an extremely brave question on her part; it would have been far safer to duck her head and scurry away while the other had been distracted! But she wanted to know! They weren’t enemies anymore, as far as she could tell. The fighting was over! So why was the Espada so invested in Ichigo, even now??

Why fight? The brat had been sympathizing with his enemy, of course she wouldn’t know any better. She isn’t any better than them. Bitterness seeped into his manner and darkened his energy; his tone is curt and determined, lip curled.   

"Because it’s not over until he’s dead."

Well, that was an incentive to bite down on her lower lip and stifle her sobs. Still sniffling, but somehow managing to lower the noise she’d been making before, Nel pushed herself back to her feet, hands gripping at her robe and head facing the bleached sand below. Every now and then, a teardrop rolled off her nose and made a dark circle on the floor between her feet, but she didn’t dare look up for fear of showing the other that she was still crying. He was already irritated with her; she didn’t want him to feel like he had to make good on his threat. 

She knew she was small, but she didn’t think she’d ever felt quite this tiny before. Standing, head bowed, in the shadow of a self proclaimed king was a humbling, albeit terrifying experience. One she’d never wish to remember again, in the event that she actually lived long enough to forget it.

He’d glower down at the tiny arrancar, arms folded across his chest as he watched her struggle back up to her feet, the sniffling not going unheard by the Sexta - but due to his uncaring attitude, he didn’t do anything about it, at least the brat wasn’t crying again. The small child definitely looked a pitiful sight, her head bowed - not daring to look at the Espada out of what he could only assume was fear. 

Good.

That was what he wanted - he wanted everyone to fear him, to respect him - and Grimmjow wasn’t above using force to get what he wanted. He’d proved that just moments before when he’d decided to pick on the younger arrancar.

“Now, get lost.”

Nel didn't need to be told twice!

Or- well, three times.

The last time she'd hindered her own escape by tripping over the hem of her cloak. This time though, she was careful to grab handfuls of the rough material before bolting. The sand was slippery and hard to run through, but she didn't stop until her chest was heaving and she'd somehow managed to clamber up an entire dune with her fists still holding the hem above her feet. It was then, and only then, that she risked glancing back down at the other. Where would he go now? Grimmjow wasn't like Nel, who had her brothers and Bawabawa to stick with. He looked awfully lonely standing down there, but she didn't dare do anything about it.

"I-I dun know!" Honestly, she didn’t! Something had happened- Ichigo’s human lady friend had vanished, and Ichigo had gone to save her, and in the end, Nel had been left behind.

It was for the best, Pesche had told her later, as she’d sat nestled on Bawabawa’s head in the arms of her brothers. The fighting had gotten bad and she’d been safer where she’d been left. The battles had left Hueco Mundo, and Nel had returned to the life she’d led before Ichigo’s appearance. Things had returned to normal. Aizen had, as far as she could tell, not returned, leading her to believe that perhaps her Ichigo, or his shinigami friends, had defeated their once leader. But surely Grimmjow knew such a thing! Las Noches stood abandoned, its walls destroyed and its hallways empty. The Espada were gone and Hueco Mundo had been left leaderless and forgotten.

"I-Itsygo must’a gone home!"

 As she stammered over her words, he finally averted his intense gaze to the desert. He should have guessed as much, the kid wouldn’t be able to tell him anything. It wouldn’t be a problem if he could have pushed past the exhaustion, exerting himself to stand again. Hatred constantly boiled in his blood as he saw that Shinigami’s back again, stepping in front of him to defend him from Nnoitra’s blade.

'Haaah? You're pathetic, Grimmjow! Losing, and now letting the enemy protect you!'

"Fuckin’ bitch," he muttered. 

He didn’t intend to hunt for his enemy yet, his time would be better spent preparing to finish their fight. Last time, it hadn’t been enough. The next time he sees him, he’d be ready to finish what they started and kill him.

  "Oh…" He giggled despite getting lost on the child’s answer. It got him, however, there were other things he worried about. "Well…"

He played with his lollipop on the mouth. From left to right cheek.

"You know, ‘some’ might see them…" Having those hollows in the living world meant Shinigamis on patrol can kill them. "I’ll help you find them..", almost in a muffled voice because of the sweet inside his mouth. It was rare for the shopkeeper to ‘help’ hollows.

The thought of her brothers being hunted and killed by the shinigami protecting the area hadn't occurred to the arrancar yet, and she remained blissfully, childishly unaware as she continued to roll the candy over her tongue. It was sweet and sour at the same time! She'd never tasted anything like it before! 

"Y'mean people like Itsygo?" Still unaware and unhurried, the child looked up at Urahara with wide, curious eyes. She was beginning to run out of candy, and it was no secret that she was on the search for more. "I dunno- if youse help me find'em, dat's also cheatin'!"

This stranger talked funny, but Nel was wise enough to keep such a thing to herself. Her words were big and her sentences didn’t make a whole lot of sense, but still Nel sat, drawing his knees up and resting her hands on them. Grey eyes stared up curiously at the other, and when books were mentioned, she tipped her head to the side quizzically.

Books?

Where would she even find books out here in the desert wasteland of Hueco Mundo? Las Noches probably had books, but there was no way Nel was going anywhere near there!! Especially alone!!

"Nel don’t read books." She replied eventually, fingers pulling at a loose thread on the hem of her sleeve.

⁄__The woman frowned slightly at that, but alas was not surprised. Sadly the written word was practically a ghost in the desert, something rare to be well-versed with. In any case she lightly ran a finger along her chin, thoughtfully looking down at the little one before she smiled.

"Such a shame. I was actually on my way to my home, though I’d hardly want to leave you out here on your own. Do you have a cave or something where you live?" She ventured, figuring that at the least she could escort the poor thing to their abode.

Ah, yes! She did!

"Dere's a cave dat Peshe an' Dondochakka tol' Nel t'go if she ever gots lost!" And surely this counted as being lost, right? Her brothers were nowhere to be found, and Nel had no idea just how far she'd wandered in her search for them.

Unfortunately though, getting lost meant that she had no idea where that cave was. Was it in that direction?? Or that one?? It wasn't as though there were many landmarks to become familiar with, after all!

"....I-I GOTS NO IDEA WHERE DE CAVE IS! NEL IS A LOST CHILD!"

A gasp, “Great!” Orihime clapped her hands together, then pointed an index finger with emphasis. “…Now, have you ever heard about the spider that didn’t spin webs to catch other bugs and eat them!?”
