i love dark academia, but…

i think the biggest issue with dark academia as a subculture is simply that people take it too seriously. the genre as a whole is, i think, meant to satirize the elitist, pretentious attitude that academics in the real world are presumed to have. dark academia is meant to highlight that aura that seems to surround exclusive universities and higher education, especially in obscure or arcane subjects; it shows these scholars’ holier-than-thou way of thinking while framing it in a context where it would be justified, with secret societies and being in on something.

the problem occurs when people assume that the content they’re consuming is idealising or condoning this attitude in real life. those posts with how to behave or what clique to befriend or where to get the Grey Houndstooth Coat™, while fun to look at and copy (to a degree), have missed the point entirely. taking an interest in dark academia is not something that sets a person apart and anoints them for an ancient god-sent purpose.

at the risk of sounding like a rick and morty fanboy, the irony in books like tsh is their entire purpose. being part of an exclusive group, when all was said and done, was the catalyst for julian’s class’s downfall. yes, dark academia is interesting, but it shouldn’t be taken as an accurate reflection of real life, whether that‘s in the very real issue of lack of diversity in education, or even just the scope of applications in the workforce for “dark academia” courses or degrees.

in conclusion, “dark” academia has its name for a reason - it takes the general theme and feeling around studying in an exclusive institution, and twists it into something which better highlights the problems with applying these attitudes in the real world. spending all day reading nietzsche and quoting plato’s ‘phaedrus’ at people when they question you doesn’t make you an enigmatic intellectual, it makes you a bitch. everything in moderation, including influence from fictional scenarios.

This is Touchou, she lives in her aunt's cabin in the middle of nowhere, and helps a dude who turns into a beast by night. Her name technically means 'winter chicken' but it sounds really good.

We are pleased to announce that by popular vote, the proposed Ferriswheel/Isshushipping Week is to be hereby named as Monochrome Week! The event is to celebrate the shipping between N Harmonia and any character that can pass as the Protagonist of the Pokemon Black and White games including Touya/Hilbert, Touko/Hilda, OCs, Self-inserts etc and will be held during December 22-28, 2019.
