The Untamed costumes 17/?
Xue Yang's outfits 1: the black robes with antique gold accents (episodes 3, 7 and 10)
Ok. Let's get Xue Yang's outfits going, shall we? Xue Yang makes his first apprarance in Wen Ruohan's throne room at the end of episode 3, wearing this outfit. We see another brief glimpse of him in episode 7, when he and Wen Chao have an audience with Wen Ruohan and he gets the permission to do as he wishes with the Chang Clan, and of course he is then present for a large part of episode 10, where the stage is set for the events leading eventually to Yi City.
The outfit that Xue Yang wears in all of these scenes has, as far as I can tell, three layers:
The standard set of undergarments: the zhongyi (ä¸čˇŁ) or zhongdan (ä¸ĺ–®) (the pants and the shirt), and the chang (裳) (a separate, typically pleated skirt).
The black middle layer robe.
The long sleeveless vest as the outer layer.
This outfit, which I have to say I like guite a lot, was bit of a pain in that I was not able to get any sharp full-body views of it (I've included a couple of blurry, heavily zoomed-in screenshots further down). So let's kick off with this ⬇️ 3/4 shot.
Let's start with the outermost layer, the vest, which is the most discerning feature of this outfit, and move inwards from there. The vest is actually quite interesting as it comprises two layers of fabric: a black and (what I would call) antique gold -patterned, relatively heavy-looking fabric, overlain by sheer black gauze. In the upper part of the vest, the two fabrics have been sewn together at the seams, but in the lower part they have not been attached, which allows them to move separately in the splitted segments (the two front slits are well visible above). The black&gold fabric is possibly silk damask, but it is actually impossible to see if the pattern is woven-in or not. The lapels and the arm holes have been trimmed with antique gold -coloured fabric.
There are further slits at the sides and the back of the vest. And even if unfocused, the above image shows nicely how the black&gold fabric is revealed from beneath the black gauze when Xue Yang is in motion.
The middle layer robe is of black silk, which has a pattern resembling oil on water, or perhaps wood grain. The sleeves are narrow, and Xue Yang wears them in arm guards of studded black leather, which are actually best seen in the first image. With this outfit, Xue Yang wears a black, studded leather belt of overlapping segments.
There is an symbol embroidered onto the left shoulder/upper arm of the middle robe, also in antique gold. Does anyone know what it is? I have failed to get a good image of it... From these two screenshots, it looks like it might perhaps be a dragon? Is it an emblem of a clan or family? Or just purely decoration?
(Not part of the outfit as such, but Jiangzai đź–¤.)
Another blurry in-motion shot, but it can be seen here that the middle robe also has slits, and that the undergarment skirt Xue Yang wears is black.
And here are the small full-body shots of the outfit I mentioned earlier. In the picture on the right, all three layers are also visible, as the hem of the undergarment skirt can be seen below the hem of the middle robe.
Regarding Xue Yang's undergarments, the shirt he is wearing with this outfit is also in antique gold (or light golden brown), to go with the accents of the other layers. His underpants? I did not see them, but they must be either the same colour as the shirt, or black. I am inclined to think the latter more likely, because gold-coloured underpants would have been more easily visible during his fight with Xiao Xingchen.
Ah, and a couple of accessories, still. Here, of course, Xue Yang's signature Stuffed Pinky Glove. Looks to be of black suede. (And it is, perhaps, a good thing he lost a pinky and not, say, a middle finger.)
And the elegant leaf hair ornament on his nice forehead braid. Also matte gold. This man likes his colour coordination, and the end result is quite elegant.
