This was a great read. I recommend this book if you're looking for a coming of age story with some action set in a fantasy world.
The Soaring Cascade is based on a world called Mader that is similar to ours. Everything changes after a strange red mist covers Mader and a few people begin to develop mysterious elemental abilities. These people became to be known as Yolites.
Many people fear Yolites and their strange powers. They are usually shunned from society, because of this, many Yolites try to keep their abilities hidden from regular humans. Only in recent years, have things begun to gradually change. For example, in the country of Galander where the story resides, there is a military group composed of powerful Yolites.
You join Clarik, a twelve year old Yolite boy, who is trying to find his place in the world. His whole life completely changed after the death of his father when he was six years old.
Allendus, a friend of Clarik's parents, agrees to take him in. He is a powerful Yolite who lives in the small town of Staright, with his two children, Leoden and Raelene.
Clarik wishes to befriend Leoden, but the two don't really get along. Even though Leoden, is only about a year older than him, their personalities are completely different. Leoden's main goal is to train and become a strong Yolite, while Clarik doesn't know how he feels about being one and usually avoids using his powers.
He had hoped that his lonely life would get better in his new home, but that wasn't really the case.
After six years of living together, Allendus suddenly decides to adopt a young girl the same age as Leoden. The kids find out that the girl named Alethia is also a Yolite like they are.
You now have a group of adoptive siblings with very different personalities all living under the same roof.
Though all of the kids are Yolites, only Leoden is interested in learning how to wield his powers and looks down on the others for not wanting to train like he does. Because of this, the kids tend to clash at times.
This all changes a few weeks after Alethia moved in to their home. Their peaceful lives come to a stop when a group of bad guys known as JCAY come after Alethia.
After getting attacked, the kids decide to train together under Allendus's guidance in order to get stronger.
Overall the book is well paced with an interesting world. You are left wanting to know more about the mysterious red mist that caused the Yolites to appear. The book has great characters, that you grow to love for their unique personalities.
I personally enjoyed reading about the elemental powers Yolites possess and how they need to train in order to achieve their amazing strength.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how all the kids develop their powers as they grow up together as a family. I can't wait for the next book in the series and what lies next in the world of Mader.
