backstreet boys > nsync: the thesis
ok let me preface this by stating the only things nsync stans bring up when defending them is 1) no strings attached outsold millennium in its first week and 2) justin timberlake’s success
i’ve already delved into #1 while yes, nsa outsold millennium in its first week (which was due to it’s constant setting back of the release date, overhype-ment, and multiple copy buying fans who wanted to outsell bsb as millennium came out first); to date millenium has sold twice as many records as nsa has and has better reviews. #2, why does that matter? we’re talking about the BANDS, not their solo success. and even if you want to bring up success, bsb is still overall far more successful as a band than jt has ever been as a solo artist. if ~i was an nsync stan i would bring up their dancing ability as it’s the only thing they have a leg up on.
anyways.
1) record sales and numerical success: bsb has sold over 130 million albums while nsync has only sold a measly 55 million. they are the number 1 selling boy band of all time, outselling the jackson 5. nsync is number 8 on that list. two of their albums–backstreet boys and millennium–are two of the best selling albums of all time whereas nsync doesn’t have a single album on said list. bsb is also on the best selling artists list of all time where nsync is, yet again, absent. bsb has also won more awards across more platforms than nsync has.
2) originality: bsb did it first. they paved the way sis! nsync’s first gig was a show bsb turned down because of brian’s heart surgery! everything nsync did felt like a sloppy, poorly done copy of what bsb already had done. they were simply a follow up to bsb; their entire career was trying to surpass them but they never could.
3) vocal ability: all 5 backstreet boys can hold a lead and actually do. brian has one of ~the best voices i’ve ever heard and aj has one of the most unique voices i’ve ever heard. does anyone in nsync besides justin and jc even sing? they harmonize far better as well and as elton john put it ”The Backstreet Boys can sing their asses off. I’m not so sure about those other boy bands.” and if you wanted to do individual vs individual the only nsync member that could hold a candle to bsb’s best singer is jc and he can’t. each of them sing laps around each nsync member. joey fatone himself said bsb are far better singers.
4) songs: bsb simply had better songs. they were more diverse, iconic, and timeless. i want it that way? as long as you love me? quit playing games? larger than life? i’ll never break your heart? backstreet’s back? the call? shape of my heart? what other song does nsync have other than bye bye bye that can ignite a whole room? not only were the vocals on bsb’s songs better, but so was the production. nsync had the same inauthentic manufactured beat to literally ALL of their songs–they all sound the same.
5) attractiveness: 3/5 of nsync were genuinely ugly all shade. chris and joey didn’t even look like they belonged in a boy band, that was how unattractive they were. jc was just not easy on the eyes and while lance wasn’t unattractive, he literally looked like he was made of plastic. justin was the only good looking one. all of bsb were attractive with maybe the exception of howie (only for a short period of time when his hair was a mess) and even then that’s 4/5 compared to 1/5.
6) group camaraderie: this one is not as important, but notable. nsync doesn’t even talk to each other anymore, justin didn’t even go to any of their weddings! they seemed like a bunch of guys who were forced to work together and just did because it worked. and the disconnect came off in their music, videos, and interviews. it added to nsync’s fakeness: they were so manufactured even their friendships were fake. bsb are literally like brothers, two of them are cousins, and the rest are super close and would be friends even if they didn’t work together, which also came off in their work. it made everything they did seem far more real and genuine than anything nsync did.
7) well rounded-ness: only 2 of 5 nsync members ever got solos. nsync is basically justin and his glorified backup dancers. i couldn’t tell you what over half of nsync sounds like if you put a gun to my head. the fairly odd parents gave chris kirkpatrick more solos than his own band did! all of the backstreet boys got solos and equally contributed to the group. there was the bad boy, the serious one, the heartthrob, the romantic one, and the funny one. no one from nsync even talked other than justin and jc so i couldn’t even tell you what their role was!
8) iconicness: this one i don’t have to explain tbh. the backstreet boys ARE the quintessential boy band. they were the trailblazers: they had a greater impact, more iconic songs, and left a way bigger mark in 90′s/00′s music than nsync did. nsync was gimmicky and corny and incredibly inauthentic and without the backstreet boys there is no nsync in the first place. the backstreet boys ARE the superior boy band, both objectively and subjectively.
