Do you resent Zig for what happened to Cam?
I’m so glad I finally have a chance to talk about this situation. Buckle up because I have a lot to say and I think it is all really important! [Before anyone says “you’re just biased because Zig is your favorite” I’ll have you know that Cam is my 2nd favorite character IN DEGRASSI HISTORY and I love him more than Maya and Zig combined so that has nothing to do with it]
For starters, no! I don’t resent Zig at all. Was what Zig said to Cam wrong? YES 100%! But let’s remember that 1) Zig was a stupid freshman who literally got his ass kicked by Cam in front of the whole school the day before and 2) Zig genuinely thought that Cam wasn’t good for Maya bc we all know that Zig literally cares about Maya more than he cares about himself. But that’s not why I don’t resent him, that’s just why I could see where Zig was coming from when he said those things to Cam.
I don’t resent Zig at all because if you genuinely think that Zig Novak is the reason that Cam killed himself then you are seriously mistaken. Let’s be honest, if it wasn’t Zig it probably would have been Dallas or someone else. It may not have happened that day but people need to understand that Cam was sick and he had talked to no one about his depression. He never sought out any help and he let no one in on how serious his depression had become. Maya didn’t know to look for the signs because she was still just a naive freshman back then. No one in the school seemed to be educated about the signs of depression in order to reach out to Cam and try to help him.
If you want to blame someone else, you have to blame the entire school and everyone who interacted with Cam. His family, his coaches, his classmates, his billet family, his teachers, ect. ANYONE could have noticed the signs but they didnt. I mean I remember that much of the audience at the time didn’t really think Cam would commit suicide but he did. EVERYONE DISMISSED THE SIGNS. So no it isn’t Zig’s fault in the slightest. When it comes down to it, the only person who is responsible for Cam’s death is the sickness inside his head.
That being said it is also important to note that of all the people that blamed Zig and thought he was scum of the earth, Zig blamed himself too. He felt so much guilt over what he said to Cam. And remember that when told Maya how it was his fault that even she laughed at him and told him how stupid that was because Zig DID NOT KILL Cam. Cam killed HIMSELF.
And though Maya is always noted for going through the most changes and grief after Cam died I have always thought that Zig went through very visible changes that still weren’t noted very much. Like Maya, Zig did not immediately change in season 12 after Cam’s death but we do see glimpses. Before Cam’s death, Zig was never a fighter and he rarely lost his temper. Remember when Cam attacked him the day before everything happened, Zig didn’t even fight back. Compared to the Zig in later seasons who is known for being somewhat of a bully. We see this mentality begin after Cam’s death when he gets angry and throws trash on Madame Jean-Aux’s car. This angrier side of Zig escalates so that when we see Zig in season 13 he has joined a gang and been thrown into the Rubber Room. Though it is not explicably stated, I believe that the drastic shift in Zig’s character between seasons 12 and 13 is directly related to the grief Zig felt over Cam’s death. Because of everything Cam’s death put him through Zig became angrier and had less self worth. These two characteristics coincide incredibly with gang life which is probably how he found himself joining because of course a poor boy like Zig would want more money from selling drugs. Also with Maya gone for the summer, Zig didn’t really have many other friends - especially ones that keep him out of trouble - so of course that was another problem solved by gang life. Cam’s death was a catalyst in setting Zig down this dark path that he stays on for pretty much the rest of the series. After Cam’s death, the funny, carefree Zig begins appearing less and less. It only makes sense for this to happen because of the guilt that Zig feels over what he said to Cam.
So in conclusion, Is what Zig said to Cam wrong? Yes. Does Zig know this and regret this? Yes, so much so that it has changed who he is fundamentally. Is Zig therefore responsible for Cam dying? No, the depression is Cam’s head is responsible for Cam dying. Was Zig a trigger to Cam’s depression? Yes, but anyone could have been a trigger. Can we blame Zig for Cam’s death? No, not unless you place equal blame on every other person who saw that Cam was depressed and still did nothing.
