there could be something really special and deep in the fact that mike and max are really similar to each other in many ways but also both dislike each other in many ways too, implying that they see the worst parts of themselves in each other and becoming friends and being silly together is a vital part of accepting themselves but no this fandom refuses to think of them anything deeper than girl who hates men and the writers of the show refused to think of them anything deeper than boy and girl who clash over jane and that’s it.

Mike Wheeler is fine. He goes to college and escapes the confines of his conservative small town and traditionalist family. He grows his hair out and starts painting his nails and wearing eyeliner. He dyes his hair and leans into a more alternative style. He starts listening to underground bands and going to concerts where he meets other alt people. He makes friends and meets queer people and lets go of the idea that his own queerness is something to suppress and hide. He kisses boys. He tells his new queer friends about Will and they encourage him to reconnect with him and tell him how he feels. He goes back to Hawkins for winter break and gets weird looks for his new style but for the first time in his life he doesn't care. He sees Will with his own new style and a confidence he never wore before. Also for the first time in his life, Mike is brave enough to tell Will how he feels.
Mike Wheeler will be fine. I give him one semester in college, maximum, to get his shit together.

Mike communicates his love through nerdy vocabulary. He tells Dustin he has superpowers to comfort him after they're bullied. He tells Will he's a "super spy" to offer him encouragement while he's actively being possessed.
When Mike tries to show Jane various things related to his nerdy interests in S1, she is not receptive. When Mike calls Jane a "superhero" this blatantly upsets her and is not what she needs to hear from him. When Mike tries to display love and affection in one of the only ways he knows how to, it is not received well (or at all) by Jane. The love he is able to offer her is not what she needs out of a romantic relationship.
Will, however, positively receives and returns the love Mike shows him through their shared nerdy interests. When Will wants to express his own love for Mike, even while using Jane as a cover for his own feelings, he knows Mike will be receptive to the painting depicting a long-held shared nerdy interest of theirs, and the feelings expressed through this interest are understood by Mike so deeply that he is able to verbally and directly say "I love you" for the first time. Then when Mike calls Will a "sorcerer," Will is receptive to this in ways that Jane was not to being called a "superhero." This comparison even allows Will to unlock his own powers using memories of him and Mike together, partaking in the same nerdy interest that they used throughout the show to express their love and adoration for each other.
This highlights one of the main differences for me between Mike's relationship with Jane versus with Will: Mike does not, cannot, connect with Jane in this meaningful way, in the way in which he knows how to express his love. But he can and has on multiple occasions connected with Will in this way and has been able to express his love and have it positively received.
This is in no way me trying to villainize Jane for not being able to nerd out with Mike - I love her dearly - This is also not me trying to to excuse Mike for hurting Jane - I just think the main reason for this is that he is not able to love her or be loved by her in the way they both need. They simply are not romantically compatible with each other. They both would be much better off as friends and much happier with themselves for not mutually holding each other to standards neither of them can achieve.
But Mike and Will? They were made for each other.
Another thing specifically about "Sorcerer":
Mike is insistent upon calling Will a "sorcerer" instead of anything else. This term becomes a stand-in for "I love you" and is the closest he can comfortably get to expressing those feelings for Will. This is why it's so important that this term isn't changed or twisted by anyone, because to Mike this would be equivalent to them twisting or changing the meaning of his love for Will.
Also, the episode in which Will unlocks his powers using his love for Mike is called "Sorcerer," which we can understand to be a phrase representative of Mike's love for Will. I just thought this was a cool comparison to point out :)
