I just read someone say this in Reddit and I am going to paste it here because it just gave me goosebumps:
"What's so heartbreaking about Taylor's first 5, maybe even 6, albums is that she is always on the outside looking in, so to speak. She has happy songs, but they aren't as holistic and grounded as Invisible String. She knows she wants a true love and has been searching for it, but hasn't fully recognized that it is one desire of many, and she ends up defining herself not by herself, but by the people and things around her. It isn't really until You Are In Love that she really recognizes herself as an outsider: "and you understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars, and why I've spent my whole life trying to put it into words" is such a sad, beautiful, and tragic lyric because it recognizes that she hasn't yet understood that kind of love, she just desperately wants to. She's trying.
Invisible String is the natural follow-up to that sentiment, the conclusion to the life-long search she articulates in it. Whether she and Joe last, it's her longest and clearly most mature relationship. She has grown, and changed, and made peace with the path to get there. "Hell was the journey, but it brought me heaven" indeed.
Invisible string is the natural, emotional, and logical conclusion of a story she started before we as an audience were even aware of it. It's why Folklore and Evermore were able to blaze such a new trail. Her first Magnum Opus is concluded, warts and all, and it is time now for her 2nd narrative. In light of how good the first one was and how strongly this one has started, I can't wait".
Oh my god I'm obsessed with this
