There was a possibility that Mercedes was imagining the scorn on Jesse’s face during their weekly class at the recreation center, she could admit that. Occasionally she made things out to be more than they were, mainly because she adored the idea that attention was always on her. Despite that inner notion, she prayed this time that the opposite was the truth. She had negated to audition for the Grease performance, mainly because she knew there wasn’t room for someone like her in the main cast. This production, like any other, would probably land her somewhere in the back, singing an impossible note, and listed under ‘extra’ on the brochure. Had she known who the director was, there was a wrong possibility that maybe she would have auditioned, but seeing as though she assumed someone along the likes of William Schuester would be the director, producer, and stage manager, she failed to do so, and was even more unhappy when the joke was on her. Jesse St. James was the director, the exact person who said they had dreams for her.
‘He didn’t tell me,’ she mused to herself during the class, but even yet, she felt a burning feeling of indignation, like she had annoyed him by not doing anything lingered and each time he looked at her during the session, or didn’t look at her, she blamed herself. As the class ended, Mercedes watched him pack up his things, preparing to leave. Biting back her weariness, she hurried towards Jesse.
“I know you probably think I was being lazy by not auditioning, but I didn’t know you were the director.”
Trying to get the hell out of Ohio all over again was far more exhausting this time around. It was as if simply being Jesse St. James wasn’t enough to catch attention and he needed to work and earn his chance. How ridiculous. Still, he was going to do what it took and that included bringing the community theater back to the spotlight. Honestly, all the drama and glee kids in this damn area had heard and come out to audition. All of them except for one.
It was almost offense to Jesse that his star private pupil had opted out of joining Grease. Part of him had planned on giving her a piece of his mind but the damn show was draining everything. Hearing her speak, Jesse turned and put his signature cocky smirk on his face and lifted an eyebrow.
“Well part of me did think it was being lazy.” He said with a shrug, “But more of me was offended you would pass up an opportunity to be in a St. James production. I mean, hello I’ve been an amazing mentor to you.” Pausing for a moment, Jesse turned to fully face Mercedes. “Why did you really not audition?”
