“Hey but your mom’s so cute, why don’t you want to go?”
“Because I’ve been going for the past twenty years of my life, and I’m kind of just getting over the idea already. Though, my fiancé taking another guy other than myself may be part of it as well. So instead of being that guy who get super jealous about it and doesn’t go, I’ve decided not to be and take a friend of mine instead.”
“Hey! Hey, can you wait up a second? I’m a little lost, I’m looking for The Fox Den? I don’t even know– God damn it.”
“You’re actually... Well, not too far from it.” Nic pointed across the street for the man. “Berwick can do that to you... Make you feel like you’re runnin’ around in circles. I get it. If you’re new to town, there’s a directory in town hall where they give out maps in pamphlets. This place is becoming more complicated than I thought.”
“A’ight, okay – I’m here. I’m coming. Jesus, hold onto your fuckin’ horses it took me ages to get into this dress. So wherever we’re goin’ it better be worth the damn effort.”
“Oh, well, it seems as though I left that out of the text. Didn’t I? –– You’ll be accompanying me to the country club for brunch. My mother insists I still go, and if I don’t show, she’ll have my head, I’m sure.”

“Well yes, but I’ve never even been to brunch before. With friends or otherwise.” Monty replied, he wasn’t trying to be mean, he was just speaking his mind and his opinions. He couldn’t control how Nic reacted to them. “I’m not used to having many friends so… If it seems like I’m overly excited about this…That’s why.”
“Do you own any properly tailored suits? Brunch is practically a country club fantasy, so if you don’t have a suit, speak now or forever hold your piece.”
“Meaning to take to brunch? You mean she’s been thinking about it for a while? – Really? I was under the impression that it was a spur of the moment decision.” Monty got a little too excited about this new information. He had rarely had friends like her so it excited him that she actually wanted to spend time with him. “Alright. Then I apologize for assuming. My intent wasn’t to offend you or injure your emotions.”
“It’s not exactly spur of the moment. You are her friend, aren’t you? You seemed to have made quite the impression on her.” Nic hated to admit that he was now replaced when it came to brunch if just one time. Being that he was now Sally’s fiancé also meant that he was no longer the best friend that accompanied her to brunch. Not that he could blame her for wanting to expand her pool of friendships, but it struck a chord with him and his insecurities. So he decided to ignore the rest as her friend so rudely put it.
“Oh, no, I didn’t mean you’d get over it in the sense that you’ll accept it, move on and that’s that. I just meant, one day it will get easier, but until then you do the best that you can.” Again her words remained soft-spoken, and Lori managed a tiny smile afterwards. She also knew it was probably best to end discussion of the topic there, not wanting to keep neither Nic or herself focused on the hurt. Taking a sip of water from her glass, the woman thought about something to transition the conversation to. One thing came to mind, and she pursed her lips before speaking. “So, I’ve been thinking about a few business ventures lately, opening a store in particular, featuring my designs and what not, but also wanted to incorporate some different ideas for building my brand, and I was wondering if I could get your opinion?”
“You don’t have to change the subject. I didn’t mean for that to come off the way it did... I’m just.” He paused, an apologetic expression on his face in response to her sudden shift in demeanor. Nic had to accept that others were also mourning Celeste. Maybe they had been in their own ways, but he needed to surround himself with people that knew her intimately as well. It was the only way anyone would get any kind of closure. “–– I mean, if you don’t want to talk about it, you don’t have to. I just hate talking about it so publicly.” Scratching the back of his head, he cleared his throat. “Anyway, yes. I’d love to give you an opinion on whatever you need. Are you thinking about making complete changes?”

“I’m not going to stop you.” As if he even could. Koda was quite certain that there was no force that could stop Nic from doing what he wanted, especially not him. “Just–… I don’t know. I’m not too sure that’s a good way. They’re just going to pin it on me that I chose a bad town to live in, if I’m as lucky as always, they’re going to use Gabby like a huge poster saying ‘look at this shy child, the town doesn’t seem to do her any good’. I’m running out of arguments, Nic.”
“See, but that’s just the thing. They’re running out of excuses. First, it was the fact that Celeste happened to die near one of the banks along the lake. Now, it’s because Gabby’s too shy? We have the best education system in the area. Granted, it was already illegal to trespass the way we did, but now all of those ends are patrolled heavily. Night and day. –– Don’t argue with them alone. They won’t listen to word you have to say unless you have a legal team that can prove otherwise. Some of them are only doing what they do ‘cause the state will bribe them. Most of the people running these things are sick fucks mixed into politics and only care for gain.”
“It is. And I say that as someone who once worked 36 hours with barely any breaks. She’s just–… I don’t know. I’m so worried, and maybe I’m not the person she needs. Maybe she needs her mother, but that’s impossible, and unfortunately I can’t serve her anybody else who could present anything close to a motherly feeling either. –Connie? I think I met her already.”
“You’re her father. Whether she likes to admit it or not, at the end of the day you’re a parent. She’s going to always need you. –– Oh, well, if you’ve met Connie, I’d suggest talking to her. Connie’s eighteen, so she might be a little older, but since they’re close in age... she could be a very good influence for your kid.”
Sally felt like her fingers were trembling, but as she looked at them, she realized they were perfectly still. The ring was beautiful, it was unique and it was dated. It was flash, and it was going to be hers until otherwise passed on. Her heart was racing in excitement, her lips in a permanent grin. She’d wanted this so badly, she couldn’t believe it was finally here. Nic, on one knee, the love of her life sweeping her off her feet with just a few words. “Nic, it’s beautiful…” She said, gazing down at it with admiration. Her free hand wiped hopelessly at her face, fingers of the other still immobilized and outstretched.
Her hands moved though to grab at his sweater when he rose to meet her again, laughing she shook her head at him for bringing up their childhood. She leaned in to kiss him, hard and quick, before pulling back just to look at him and have him wipe her tears. “I’m so happy. This makes me so happy, Nic, you don’t even know…” Goodness, her father’s were going to freak. Unless… of course they already knew.
“I’m happy you are, Sally. And I’m happy you want to... so, so happy.” He uttered in low tone, basking in the moment between the two of them. Nic was about to spend the rest of his life with his best friend. What resonated was the fact that he had technically spent all of his life with her and suddenly, he realized they were the exact definition of a fairytale romance. In his eyes, that’s what she deserved. Sally was a princess, and he did just about anything to be her prince.
Nervous digits continued to comb her hair back while he kept an adamant gaze on her. Clearing his throat, he continued, “It’s a little updated. Might not be how you remembered, but it’s the same band. It was remodeled to look a bit more modern... I just really wanted it to fit you.” A small chuckle was uttered between them while both hands cupping her cheeks, thumbs brushing at her contours. “I’m so sorry I couldn’t wait it out for a dinner or something. I even thought about the Christmas tree in New York... Taking a four day weekend just to ourselves over there. I’m just really impatient.”
“Perhaps you should explain the situation further. Because making an estimate based on the information I’ve received about the situation, it seems as though the only reason you have a problem with her is because you two dated.” Monty shrugged. “We’ve been friends since I moved here in September. She mentioned that she was with a guy named Nic, which unless there’s a different Nic in this town…It’s you.”
“Oh, so you’re the guy she’s been meaning to take to brunch.” It was mostly just a thought he finished verbally before continuing the rest. “My ex stole money from me and my parents. Along with other things. So stop making accusations and insinuating I should be over it just because it’s been long. If you don’t know, you can’t judge. If you’re going to play some kind of psychologist, you’re looking to analyze the wrong person and the wrong situation. You were in my vicinity, you made yourself entirely way too obvious, I was just asking you to lay low.”
Koda pressed his lips into a thin line, unable to say no to his friend’s offer, but at the same time unable to say yes to it. While he wanted nothing more than for someone to help him he trusted, he thought Nic had many other things to worry about, and he didn’t want to add to that pile of thoughts. Sighing quietly, he just shrugged his shoulders. “Do what you want to do. I just don’t want you to… I don’t know. Don’t overwork yourself.”
“Koda... I wouldn’t be overworking myself. It’s actually what I need right now and if I can do something good for somebody, especially my best friend...” There was a pause for a moment as he crossed his arms. Nic mulled over his thoughts as quickly as he could, hoping he could come up with some kind of resolution they could start with right on the spot. “We just have to prove that the state can’t take care of them and you’re a better fit than any foster home or shelter they’d come across.”
“It was more awkward for me than it was for him, I’m sure of it─he might actually consider the run in as the best day of his life and with good reason because I look damn good naked.” Mini shut the laptop screen down gently and turned to face Nic, her fingers drumming across the sleek surface of the laptop. “I happened to be sun bathing and didn’t want to get any tan lines. No one was supposed to be home. I think he planned it.”
Nic’s brows rose in response to her encounter, up from leaning against the couch to cross his arms. Looking down at her, he canted his head. Minnie was another little sister to him, if anything. She spent so much time with the Andrettas growing up, Celeste being her babysitter, that she really became another one of them. “... And why haven’t you called the cops on the pervert?”
Nic was always sweet to her, he had never been any different and so Sally remained calm and collected, soaking in his words. She knew that he had a romantic complex, he needed her to know how much he loved her at all times. But she didn’t mind, she liked it. Loved it even, because she loved him.
But there was something different here, an edge to his voice that she couldn’t quite pick and he really was hitting all the nails on the head here of how he felt about her. She wondered if something had happened, if this was his way to make the wrongs right. Her eyebrows pulled in slowly, just as he reached down and pulled out a small box. She knew. In that moment, she knew what it was and what was about to happen. Her expression washed over completely by a new one, staring at the ring before her eyes began to water. Even his voice, quoting her given names was enough to make her want to fall to her knees and be cradled in his arms forever. “Yes.” She choked out, feeling ridiculous for how teary she’d become in that moment. She must have looked like a mess. “Of course, Nic, yes.”
He let go of her hand for a second so he could carefully get the ring from the box to place it onto her finger. Amber hues flickered at the sight, swollen with tears of joy and happiness. Nic was always full of emotion, but at this very instance, he was overwhelmed with feelings he never thought were possible. As his heart opened so freely and genuinely, it was enough for him to feel Celeste’s presence. She would’ve wanted him to ask either way, but he knew she would’ve preferred he did when the moment didn’t seem so staged. And she would’ve been right. Asking Sally to marry him naturally took its course.
Nic gazed up at his fiancé a moment longer, brushing his lips over her fingers before he got up to embrace her. “I’m speechless. So much for getting rejected at the sandbox, right?” he mumbled, giggling when he attempted to wipe the tears off Sally’s cheeks. Arms wrapped around her waist, he pulled her in for a much stronger, more passionate kiss, finally able to revel in the euphoria he felt with Sally.
She gave Nic a sympathetic look, he was right, it was going to be very different. She wanted to be there for him, she really did but Jacob would about lose his head if she spent a Christmas at the Andretta family’s home instead of her own. The idea to as about a combination sprung to mind, but that was of course a thought for another time.
Sally reached to straighten a fork, hating things to be out of place but Nic took the outstretched hand and turned her to him. A surprised frown crossed her features, eyes raking up his front. But when he spoke three little words, her expression softened and Sally smiled. “I love you.” She assured him, smoothing her hands up from the crook of his elbows to his biceps. Despite her being on him all the time about his diet, she could always still appreciate his figure and the muscle that lay there. It made her feel safe at night when wrapped up in it, his breath on the back of her neck and thighs tucked under hers. “I’m glad that we were able to get you here.” She told him with a smile. “You’ve helped me grow too. You’re all that I ever need.”
The last few of her words resonated deeply. You’re all that I ever need. Nic was entirely sure Sally hadn’t expected any kind of proposal from him in their current setting. She probably wanted something extravagant, something straight out of a Hollywood Classic. It could be utter disappointment, but would it? He knew better. There was so much love between them that any time would’ve been right. She still would have loved him.
A small whimper escaped his lips when he took a breath, a hand gently cupping her cheek as he leaned in to kiss her. He lingered there for a moment longer, sure enough that she could feel the electricity in his nerves. Plus, it was completely out of character; Nic’s kiss was never so unstable. “Sally,” he murmured, resting his forehead against hers when he pulled her in as close as he could. He retracted his expression for a moment, just to meet her gaze with emotion. This was it.
“You know I love you. With all of my heart.” His breath was shaky, tears beginning to well up in his eyes again. “It’s kind of hard not to. –– I’ve loved you since we were kids. I love you even more now as adults. You’re my best friend, and the love of my life. I adore your love and dedication to my family, and I admire and look up to you as a person every single day of my life. Sometimes I wish you only knew the extent to how you make me feel, but it’s something I don’t want from anyone or anything else, but you. I can only hope I do the same for you like I want to for the rest of my life.”
His hand dropped to her left, bringing it up to plant a kiss over her knuckles. The other let her go to fumble around in his pant pocket for a little blue box clearly marked Tiffany & Co. when he took it out. Holding her hand, still, he bent down on one knee. The hand that was occupied with the box now nervously opened it up for clear viewing, a ring so gigantic and polished, it hadn’t looked like a family heirloom. “Sally Lauren Juliet Redmayne, it would be an absolute honor to be your husband as it’d be an absolute honor to have you as my wife. Will you marry me?”
“I don’t think she has any friends, not to sound mean, but that’s how it seems. The people she meets at parties however… very bad influence. I thought it would get better far away from New York, but so far that hasn’t happened. It’ll pass – that’s what everybody keeps telling me. But that won’t stop me from worrying.”
“Well, obviously. I can only imagine being a parent is one of the hardest jobs in the world. You’re responsible for another living, breathing human being and not only are you responsible, but you also have feelings of love and adoration attached to said person... So, of course. You’re never going to stop worrying. She’s your daughter. –– You know something... She should meet Connie. My little sister.”
