"No, you listen to me. When you're messing with the shrines and the trade routes and all that stuff you're not just losing me money. You are cutting into my flesh. You are bleeding me. Now, I am not a violent woman by nature, but I have my limits. If I ever find you cutting me again, you will have precious little time to regret it. Is that clear?" - Saint In-the-Red
(Some bummer stuff under the cut. You don't need to look at it. It's a bit personal.)
Dying-in-a-big-cursed-cave type woman
"You lost everything? You're broke? Dude. Just sucker another rube into giving you a loan and get back in the game! It's not over till it's over!"
Sketchy sketchy
Never would have thought that something like the Incarnadine from Heart: The City Beneath would appeal to me but here we go.
"Okay, listen. I hear ya. These fuckers suck. They don't care. They embrace greed as a way of life. They will take whatever they can get their gnarled hands on. And they'll grin at you while they're fleecing you because they know you're not gonna stab them. Because they explode, when you do. Hm? Oh yes. We explode. Fine. I'm kinda like that, too. Though I hope I'm not that far gone. Okay but listen, listen, listen. They're not like that for no reason. You should know this before you judge them too harshly. Us. Us too harshly. Look, Incarne always collects. Always, no matter what you have. And you always have something. You have relatives, friends, a place in the world. She takes those. You have memories, hopes, dreams. She takes those, too. You have empathy, compassion, basic human decency. You better believe she'll take those. Debt will hollow you out until naked greed and envy are all that remains. And it's good that she does this. Yes, I did just say that. It's good. Why? Because you people down here? You need things. You live in a uniquely hostile environment. You cannot survive without supplies from elsewhere. But who would trudge through these cursed tunnels with a backpack full of consumer goods for the sole purpose of turning a profit? Nobody sane. Nobody whole. But I will. Lucky you. And I do it because there's nothing else that feels like anything anymore except the hustle, the grift, the deal! So let's make a deal. You can't afford not to."
Self-reblog, because I noticed the formatting got all fucked up and I fixed it.
I'm not finalizing this character yet (our GM asked us not to) but I do have some ideas that may or may not become canon:
She's a Drow
Incarne took her birth name so she took on a new one. Some ideas: Zero-Sum, In-the-Red (I like this one a lot, but it's very Aelfir-coded so idk), Filigree, Chintzy, Glitzy, A-Promise-Made (hey maybe she is the kind of freak who would choose a parody of an Aelfir name for herself), Audhmaris, Inegilda
quite meaningfully addicted to the rush of a bargain, a good sale, a gamble paying off
was so horrendously exploited in her old life that the Incarnadine Sword of Damocles feels like freedom
Genuinely considers what she does a service to society, but doesn't truly care

i think the funniest thing about glitch (that's a lie, glitch is often very funny and there's better candidates for #1) is that like
ok, so concept of the game is "the characters your playing were actively trying to destroy the world, and probably did succeed at removing some concepts from reality (and also killing a lot of people). but they stopped, and decided to just live in the world instead, and now they have to navigate that"
but i feel like that doesn't convey that like. the book kind of assumes you still do think the world should be destroyed. like you could play someone who has fully changed their mind, but "I think the world should be destroyed, I just think it can wait" or even "I think it should be destroyed as soon as possible, I'm just... really, really tired. someone else will do it." are like, very much positions you can take, and are arguably more typical (insofar as there's a typical position at all for retired Strategists, of which there aren't many)
(i mean even the ones that have changed their mind might be more "the world is fundamentally bad, but like. eh? it's whatever. aside from it still killing me over and over with it's fundamental wrongness, but oh well.")
which, you know, all very relatable to me but maybe not what everyone jumps to ^_^
nobody asked but here's my main blorbos' positions anyway:
Haiduil Pompeius (dying of Rust): Oh I haven't given up. I just... burned myself out with that doomsday device disaster. I'm only taking an extended sabbatical. I'll get back to it... eventually...
Ildinia Kills-with-Words (dying of Bureaucracy): Literally fuck offfffff! I have a daughter to raise poorly. And a job. I have no time for war.
Scarthas Gadhra (dying of Fate): I personally think the world should probably be destroyed, but I also think that a Strategist should always question this notion because it comes to us so naturally. We are often deceived by our own nature. What I do know for certain, though, is that the war is grinding us into dust. So no, we should not be destroying the world. It is unproductive and unhealthy. I can explain this in more detail. Do you have a few hours?

GB: "You speak of rejecting easy answers, even those that none of us can escape. You say we should even reject the null hypothesis."
SG: "To be clear: I have never stated that the world is not wrong. I do not myself believe that the world is not wrong. But I question it. And I advocate for the questioning of it. Precisely because is such an easy conclusion to us."
GB: "Apologies. I didn't mean to put words in your mouth."
SG: "I don't think you did. However, I want to make my meaning clear. It is often misunderstood out of an instinctual revulsion. The truth is—of course—that if I did truly believe that the world had merit, we would not be having this conversation."
GB: "What do you mean?"
SG: "Knowledge of the wrongness of the world is intrinsic to a Strategist. To accept the world is to become something else."
GB: "Ah yes. I have read about this in the works of Ercangast and Alidag."
SG: "Much has been written on the topic, yes."
GB: "From your writings and this conversation I have gotten the feeling that you in particular don't place much value in being a Strategist. You seem rather disillusioned with it."
SG: "Mmh. We are glorious, beautiful and sacred things. But we are also defined overwhelmingly by failure, misery and self-delusion. It is a proud thing to be a Deathwright. But it is a pitiful thing, too."
GB: "By this logic, if accepting the world is to become something other than a Strategist—wouldn't that be a good thing?"
SG: "Ah, we must be careful in conflating these concepts. I am not secretive about my desire to transcend my state of unbeing as Cannamarka once did. But not every transcendence is a change for the better. We are not so wretched that we couldn't fall further. We all know this. We know what it is like to be a mere revenant."
GB: "Do you think accepting the world would cause you to fall back into revenance?"
SG: "No. In fact this is very unlikely. I have not yet met a revenant that didn't hate with the same fervour as we do. I am merely pointing out that—flawed and haunted as we are and yearning as I am to transcend—shedding our nature is not a good thing by necessity."
GB: "I see."
SG: "I cannot tell you what would happen if you opened your heart fully to the world and became truly convinced of its inherent merit. I do not know of a single Strategist who has done this. Perhaps it has happened, but there is no record of it. And so it is impossible to say."
GB: "Does that worry you?"
SG: "You are quite insightful, do you know that?"
GB: "You honour me, Illuminate."
SG: "You are correct. I am troubled by it. My pursuit of the ultimate transcendence has stalled for quite some time now. It is possible that this acceptance is what I am missing to take that final step. But I do not know."
GB: "I find that interesting. I'd think that acceptance of the world couldn't possibly be a part of it, given that Cannamarka had achieved this transcendence before there was a world to accept."
SG: "It is not that simple. Cannamarka's state of enlightenment is a complicated thing. She was not beholden to the dualities that we take for granted. She resided in Rainnuan and she did not. She did neither and she did both. She is in Creation's past and she is not. Both and neither. She was destroyed when Rainnuan was shattered and she was not. Is it really so impossible that she could have transcended void and world both before there was a world to transcend? Could she not have accepted the value of Creation before Cneph even conceived of it?"
GB: "It still strikes me as illogical, I must confess."
SG: "Mh. Then let us return to less murky ground. Assuming acceptance of Creation was impossible and therefore never necessary for Cannamarka, it would still trouble me."
GB: "Oh yes?"
SG: "Cannamarka achieved her transcendence in a vastly different environment and from a vastly different initial state of unbeing. Perhaps she needed not accept the world, but she also was not poisoned and degraded by it. She was never at war with it. We cannot simply walk her path and expect it to still lead to the same end. Rainnuan is no more. Ninuan is fallen. Everything we do, we do in the context of the world."
GB: "Ah. Yes, I can see the logic behind that. Given this, is achieving Cannamarka's transcendence even possible anymore?"
SG: "It is."
GB: "How can you know?"
SG: "It is my fate to achieve it. And if there is anything I do understand quite intimately, it is fate. I only hope that when I find the path, I can mark it for others to follow."

Ugh isn't Kom just the worst? He can't even do the rivalry thing right. Absolute horseshit. He needs to get is head in the game.
Quick lil comic
Another failgirl for the fucking pile. Jesus Christ will I ever have enough of these? I might need an intervention.
Anyway.
Serendipity aka Ren. Age 15.
Superior Immortality 2 Affliction: Pain Magnet 0 (If somebody in my vicinity is getting hurt, it must be me.)
It's a rough time for Ren. It's always a rough time for Ren.
To wit:
"Remember the tryouts for Captain a while back, Kom? I do. I worked so hard. I really really wanted that promotion. I worked harder than I probably should have and I worked nearly every day, except for those days after I'd hurt myself training.
"Point is, I worked myself to the bone. And you still completely trashed me. And you did it easily. It was no contest at all. And ever since then I have known that I'll never amount to anything. Because I gave it my all and it wasn't enough and I don't think I could ever do that again.
"But you? You could do it again any day. It would be easy for you. I needed that win. It was my only chance, Kom. And you took it from me.
"You could have let me win. You could have. Just that once. Why couldn't you just let me win?!"
Actually important addition to this: I was originally gonna take Ren on a Mystic Arc (we're playing mundane level), but I kept running into issues when considering where that would go because the setting at the point in the story we're currently at doesn't have a lot of the necessary bits and bobs of a Mystic Arc readily available (such as clear, transformative miracles and clear enemies in cosmic conflicts and such).
So at the end of my first quest I settled on the miracle being a rather small, personal thing: Ren deciding that despite all the bullshit she goes through all the time, she really desperately wants to see the future. And that's technically totally valid for the conclusion of a Mystic 1 Quest. I was still struggling with making Mystic 2 work at all.
But then I happened to look at the Emptiness Arc page again and read the description of Emptiness 1 and... It fit perfectly. I'd accidentally completed an Emptiness 1 Quest.
This got me thinking. An Emptiness Arc was definitely easier to fit in the framework of the setting and story we are playing. It would be a pretty huge pivot of where Ren's story is going, but it'd be much smoother. Kind of natural.
So I said, yeah okay game. Fine. I guess in the end I'm just such a sucker for Glitch that I can't help but make pseudo-Strategists whenever I create a character for anything.
Emptiness, here I come.

SUITS Update???
Okay no not really. But I did get involved in a QuestDen Secret Santa event. This is obviously not canon, but you might learn a few things about Agents Gladii and Fera anyway.
And there's plenty of cool art from all sorts of other QuestDen creators.
