NICK DUVAL has just enrolled at 𝐖𝐌𝐔 looking like TAYLOR ZAKHAR PEREZ as a THIRD YEAR student ! They are taking ETHICS, LAW & LEADERSHIP, SPANISH, & JOURNALISM with their enrollment, and are said to be PASSIONATE and IMPULSIVE! They hold a PREPPY BOY NEXT DOOR vibe about them, which I can see, and my roommate said they really like LEARNING THE GUITAR, WHISKEY ON THE ROCKS, and A GOOD PRANK but aren’t into HARSHING SOMEONE’S BUZZ, INVASIONS OF PRIVACY, or ELITISM. They hope to join the WARBLERS glee club, so let’s hope they don’t get eaten alive.
Full name: Nicolás Allen Duval
Birthdate & Age: December 24 / 22
Pronouns: he/him
Sexual Orientation: bisexual disaster
Do you want your character to live on or off campus: On campus
Will your character request a job upon acceptance? No
Anything major from the canon portrayal of your character that you’re changing? I’d be playing him as explicitly a PoC, half Mexican from his mom's side. He plays lacrosse, he’s a legacy Warbler because of his dad, and he’s planning to take the LSATs next year with an eye toward law school.
Anything major from the canon portrayal of your character that you’re keeping? Preppy rich boy, check!
Oh you got one of those bottles? That’s fancy. Hey, ice is definitely a way to go too. You don’t always need fruit in your water. But I will say sometimes, that fruit just hits different, lad.
I miss Ireland and the small country side farm. But I mainly miss my family. Oh yeah maybe. I just don’t know where everyone is from or if they’d be too busy, you know?
Well, if you want someone to hang out with, we could hang out over the summer some time.
I canNOT drink lukewarm water, ugh. It has to be ice cold or I just can't make myself do it. I haven't tried the fruit yet, though -- I don't usually have fresh fruit laying around my dorm room, on account of the fact that I immediately forget I bought fresh fruit and it ends up getting tossed out.
Ireland's gorgeous, totally a little jealous there. I know there's a bunch of us who don't have too far to go in the summer; my folks are in Columbus, which is only about an hour and half for me, although I've got family back in Mexico too, so I get that. That's definitely a manageable drive for the summer, though -- we could totally hang out, when I'm not sneaking off to the beach again.
Watching is only half the fun, Nick! Why watch when you can star in it? Do you consider yourself a performer? There's only so much waiting on the sidelines that you can do until you just combust from NEED to be heard. At least, that's how I feel. It's like a ticking timer in my heart, thumping ALL THE TIME. It's fantastic! The fact that you have a study playlist is a total green flag that you're an absolute cutie! What are your top three favorite songs of all time?
Thoughts can be like that sometimes, especially if they're thoughts you feel intensely or passionate about. Don't ever feel like you have to shut up, though. This is a safe space for delving into any thoughts you're comfortable sharing. In fact, I #totally encourage it. You're an aspiring lawyer? That's hugely exciting! Were you an Aaron Burr stan, or a Hamilton defender?
I mean, I sort of figured it'd be you and Stacey headlining that particular musical, without a need for a leading man, but if you're looking for volunteers... I'd be a sorry excuse for a Warbler if I didn't consider myself a performer, but I guess you'll just have to wait and see. (Incidentally, the Warblers are accepting female applicants -- just to put it out there.)
Oh please, no -- choosing favorite songs is impossible. It depends on my mood, and the time of day, and the time of year, and if I need to sing along or dance or sulk or whatever. You could ask me that daily and get a different answer every single time.
You may come to regret that. I think my roommate might be the only one who hasn't, at some point, told me to just shut up already (and in retrospect it's entirely possible he HAS and I just... didn't notice.) I am, in fact, and aspiring lawyer, and it's probably a bit of a problem that I related much more to Hamilton. Literally at no point ever have I been any good at waiting for anything.
As long as you're making progress, that's what matters. How's it going with the new meds? It's not going to change overnight so I understand a few slip ups. Just balance it out with more water.
See, that's the real struggle. You work too hard as it is, so you should take a break and not worry about internships. Plus a beach house is relaxing, and you deserve that. But that is good to know, and I will probably be taking you up on that so thanks, buddy.
I know, I know -- progress isn't necessarily linear. It's probably going to take a while to dial in the right dosage, but it... actually seems to help? Wild, huh. MORE water, 😩
See, you just don't want any more competition for the really good internships. Although, let's be honest, anything involving the FBI and/or CIA would be a no-go for me because no one in their right mind would set me on either of those career paths -- that's ALL you. Don't mention it -- I'll show you all the best bars in Cabo, it'll be great.
The real question is are you putting this appreciation for self care to use, or are you just being mindful that you should do it but haven't started yet? I thought I nagged you enough before spring break about never taking time to breathe and give yourself a break?
But I haven't thought much about the summer yet other than being in Houston for Megan Thee Stallion's concert. After Mexico, I do know that I want to be drinking for most of it though. I feel like I should probably look for a summer internship at a law office or even maybe the FBI or CIA if they'll allow it, but I also kind of want a break so maybe not? Can't decide. What about you?
I'm being good! I swear! Between you and Kurt and Hunter and the new meds my coffee consumption is down to two cups a day! Usually. Most of the time. ...I've only slipped up a couple of times, okay?
Oh god, I've been blocking out the internship applications stacked on my desk, mostly because I don't know if I'd want to stick around here or go back to Columbus. And I kind of want to spend some time at the family beach house too, you know? Spring break made it pretty obvious I've been neglecting that part of my life lately. Which, incidentally, if I do that, we have guest rooms should you need to drop off the map for a week or two, just sayin'.
Yeah that’s definitely not a good thing. But self care is a good thing absolutely. What kind of water bottle did you get, lad?
Well, I’ll probably fly back home for a period of time, then come back and spend some time with my host family. If they go on summer vacation, I’ll see about staying at their house. They said I could stay there whether they’re there or not.
So I've been told, and contrary to popular belief, it is occasionally possible to get through to me. Oh man, I don't even know -- it's this fancy thing with like, an infuser? Which is apparently for fruit, but that seems way above my pay grade, so I've mostly just been loading it up with ice and calling it a day.
Hey, getting to go home for any amount of time sounds nice, especially if you really miss it. It's awesome that your host family is so cool, though -- maybe you can visit friends you've made here, too?
I'd been planning to register for summer classes, but now I'm wondering if I should. My parents have a summer place, so I might head out there for a bit, or back to Columbus, or maybe just throw a dart at a map and see where it takes me.
So I keep hearing that getting lost in a haze of coffee and schoolwork is not, in fact, a good thing, and I shouldn’t do it anymore. Sounds fake, but I have a water bottle and a shiny new (reluctant) appreciation for self care. (I know, right? I’m as shocked as all of you, we’ll see how long I can keep this up.)
In the interests of taking a break from my study outlines: I want to know what everyone’s summer plans are. And if you don’t have plans yet, what would you like to do? I know we just got back from spring break, but all the more reason to look ahead to something positive, right?
Historical sci-fi is...definitely something I could be on board with. I'm relatively open-minded when it comes to the variety of genres that exist. After reading Dune, I'd like to think I'm a little more clued up into the sci-fi world!
Consider me intrigued, Nicky! I'll add it to my to-buy list and get started straight away. Thank you for the recommendation! What makes you like the book so much?
I haven’t actually read Dune yet — I know, I know, I went for Asimov instead, but it’s on my TBR now!
I mostly just got a kick out of future historians time traveling to experience their periods of study firsthand, and then the resulting shenanigans — it sounds like something I would do if I were a history nerd. I actually read Doomsday Book set in the same universe first, but that had a VERY different tone and might actually be triggering, so To Say Nothing of the Dog is much lighter and, y’know, Victorian England instead of the Middle Ages’ Black Death.
Yeah well, while you don't need to try out or anything if you want to join chess club, you definitely will if you want to be a cheerleader. I'm gonna expect a full routine and everything. Oh, and you're also gonna need to promise you won't play favorites cause' your roomie said he was interested in joining too.
Full routine, huh? Are cartwheels required? 'Cause I can’t do a cartwheel, but Stacey said she’d teach me. I could probably rock the skirt, though, 🤔 Oh no, no playing favorites — if anything Hunter should be worried about me deliberately distracting his game because he forgot to pick up coffee after class. Or, y’know, just for fun.
Now that I've finally finished my official lab project, I have so much more free time to start reading again which is so exciting! This is an official call for all reading recommendations - classics, modern literature, or whatever takes your fancy. I'm relatively open-minded when it comes to the genre or type of fiction I'm reading, so bring forth any of your favourites and I'll definitely give them a try.
At the moment, the book Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow has me near-tears, but in the BEST possible way. Brownie points to anyone who can offer a book that might make me cry.
How open to sci-fi are you? But like, historical sci-fi? I don't know why I get the impression you might enjoy To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis, but that's what popped into my head. I haven't had much time for reading outside of textbooks lately, but I hope to get a bit more free time this summer to catch up on my TBR list.
An explosion of enthusiasm would be the most fantastic name for a new Musical, don't you think? The genre could be pop punk, or perhaps pop rock with a hint or a twist of rap thrown in for good measure. What kind of music do you like? And that is TOTALLY an important question! No pressure!
Wait, what name did you call your dog? That's utterly adorable. I'm not sure if you saw my answered question the other day - I've been informed that I can't simply assume that everyone is following my every move, according to my parents that's a little egotistical - but I gushed a little about my two kitties, BombDotCom and Demi. They were named after two characters in the Musical Cats and I'm utterly obsessed with them. Did you like Hamilton? Tell me ALL of your thoughts immediately. Spare no details.
Hey, I'd totally watch that musical. Oh, my music tastes are all over the map. I tend to pick songs based entirely on vibes, so it doesn't exactly stick to a genre. My study playlist is basically three hours of musical stream of consciousness.
He's called Max, after Maximus the horse, but mostly we just stick to Max or Maxie. I saw that, and my roommate's totally a cat person too. I've never had one myself, but I can appreciate them, if nothing else. Oh, you don't actually want me to tell you ALL of my thoughts -- there are a lot of them, usually tripping over each other and getting tangled up in knots, so I tend to not shut up once I get going. I did like it though, especially as an aspiring lawyer with a bit of an idealism complex myself.
You've not even heard me in person, yet, so I'm VERY impressed that my dynamic and fierce volume is being heard through a computer screen. What an extraordinary compliment! My path has not yet passed with Stacey Evans just yet, however I have met her brother, I believe, Sam. What makes you think the two of us need to meet so badly?
OF COURSE Disney movies count, you noodle bean! Some of the Disney adaptations are my favorites of all and anyone who tries to tell you otherwise isn't a true musical fan. What Disney movies are your favorites? Please tell me you've seen Hamilton already, and you took the advice and great taste of your sister seriously. It is a #EXPERIENCE watching Hamilton and everyone deserves that sweet, enriching, emotional moment for the first time. I'm sure I can try my best to remain patient, don't you fear!
There are some things that just transcend the internet, I guess. Oh, no reason. She's just pretty enthusiastic and energetic herself, it could be like an explosion of enthusiasm.
Well, then, if Disney movies count then I've seen lots. I was always kind of partial to Tangled, I was about the right age when that one came out and miiiiiight have named my dog accordingly. Oh god yes, I've seen Hamilton -- there was no escaping it at Casa Duval for a while there. Wait, and then there was the In the Heights rabbit hole it spawned, I think? That's a musical too, right?
…Why you gotta make me think existential thoughts on a Friday evening, Sammy? 😫
I was gonna say no, it’s not a soup because it’s cold, but ceviche and gazpacho exist, so. Fruit soup, I guess? Which means technically tomato soup is a smoothie, ergo YES.
