Similar in style to my own drawings. How can using Gell’s methods help to unpack beyond the physical form to explore the ideas and conceptual shapes beneath the surface. What are the shared ideas? Where do they take different paths? What is the process of creation?

Blueprints for the Unknown

Recent advances in synthetic biology are making the design of new life forms an increasingly real possibility. Driven by an engineering approach to biology, the future scientist/designer is envisioned as an architect of life, creating living organisms from a library of standardised and replicable parts.

However, life may or may not agree with the industrial paradigm we feel comfortable with. Living organisms are unstable, random and context specific. They are subject to evolution, mutations and symbiosis. Additionally, once science gets out of the lab and into the world it becomes part of much bigger systems such as economics, politics and human beliefs – with surprising outcomes for better or worse.

This series of projects investigates the gap between the promises of engineering biology and the complex and conflicted world we live in. Each scenario is set in a very specific context, ranging form healthcare to green politics and bonzai grooming, and probes the potential impact of biotechnology on society and culture.

The Aesthetics Of Unreality - Ricardo Lardi A series of photos and animations on fictional physical experiments Royal College of Art, 2015 Futures are imagined for all sorts of reasons, from promotional scenarios in the tech industry to the imaginary worlds of science fiction cinema. Visual representation plays an important role, but the design languages used to present these imaginary worlds are often hackneyed and repetitive limiting their ability to inspire and provoke genuinely new thinking about alternative realities. In design fiction and speculative design too, fictional worlds are nearly always presented in a "realistic" style. They’re different, but not really. Once you move beyond realism a whole range of barely explored possibilities for new forms of engagement, at least in design, become possible. This project suggests a series of experiments on fictional physical phenomena. Using aesthetic idioms taken from science and technology it blends computer generated content into real, staged situations and plays with the unidentifiable and unknown, using estrangement and association as playful elements.

The Institute of Making is a cross-disciplinary research club for those interested in the made world: from makers of molecules to makers of buildings, synthetic skin to spacecraft, soup to diamonds, socks to cities.

An interdisciplinary group of researchers, makers and materials enthusiasts from around UCL and beyond have put together the ‘Dangerous Diaries’ exhibition at the Octagon Gallery.

The exhibition explores the risks and rewards involved in fabrication by delving into the daily lives of a group of materials and making enthusiasts, including a chemist, conservator, ceramicist, geoarchaeologist, printmaker, sculptor, anthropologist and a historian. This interdisciplinary team has kept diaries recording their experiences of the pleasures and perils of production. In conversation with varied artefacts from ten different UCL Collections, our dangerous diarists reflect on how perceptions of risk and approaches to hands-on engagement with materials have changed over time.
